As U Wish

Now I’m just a city girl born and bred, and for some stupid reason I get nervous when my shoes (and the rest of me) leave Manhattan. I dunno, maybe it’s that famous Steinberg Cartoon image stuck in my head. The one that’s a quasi map that shows everything outside of New York is just a bunch of blocks with Kansas sitting check and jowl by Moscow. Anyway, I took the plunge and headed off to Hoboken, New Jersey for a pedicure.
I had heard fantabulous things about As U Wish, an intimate nail salon that has the most incredible treatments, so I had to go, even if I was being silly about leaving “Tara.”
Let’s just say that I was being idiotic. I picked up the PATH train at 33rd Street and in 15 minutes was in Hoboken. That’s much faster than say going to SOHO from my house in the Upper West Side.
The salon is owned by Skyy Hadley. She put herself through college doing nails for friends and it wasn’t until she was halfway through her Marketing degree at UMKC, that she realized that she wanted to do nails. It gave her joy, it was fun, and she got a tremendous sense of satisfaction when her customer was happy with her beautiful nails. She enjoys nail care and started learning about nail diseases. The more she learned, the more she became enthralled with nails, nail care and preventing diseases, the more she wanted to do nails.
So Skyy moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. She was in Sex and the City, The Best Man, and many commercials. To keep herself going while acting she began doing manicures and pedicures at Prive. Bliss heard about her and tried to steal her away, but she didn’t want to leave her clients behind, so she worked at both places until she finally moved onto Bliss. One of her first and most loyal customers is the actress Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU). She followed Skyy to Bliss and when asked by In Style magazine what was her beauty secret, she replied, “Skyy.”
Then other celebrities followed Mariska’s lead. Her client list reads like a who’s who of music, film, TV, society, and publishing. She does Cynthia Lieve, the Editor -In-Chief of Glamour magazine, Kim France, the Editor-In-Chief of Lucky magazine, Faith Hill is one of her dearest and most loyal clients. Other celebs include Claire Danes, Liv Tyler, Uma Thurman, Faith Evans, Puffy (Sean Combs), Alicia Keyes, Annette Waxman, Isaac Hayes, Lanette McKey, Debbie Langford, Chris Webber, and Johnnie Cochran.
Celebrities have been known to fly to New York just so that they can get a pedicure from Skyy. It’s easy to see why; she has an upbeat, warm cheerful personality and enjoys making everyone look their best. “I love it! When you know that you love something and your clients see that in you, it just makes you love it even more. My clients always say ‘Skyy you what you’re doing’ and I always ask how can you tell? And they say ‘you’re too into it.’”
When doing a pedicure, she prefers to deal with bad feet. “Because you can really get involved…when you see damaged feet and the customer appreciates it because they can see a big difference…with bad, bad feet, they (the customer) understand what you’re doing more than a person with good feet.”
Skyy decided to go out on her own because she believes in customer service. “I believe in catering to the customers no matter what, there’s no beyond…which is how I came up with the name. I want to be your genie, so your wish is my command.” Before she decided to create her own spa, she looked over the competition in the city, and the only spa that impressed her was the Greenhouse; because they used stainless steel tubs. “The reason why they use the stainless steel tubs is that they can’t harbor bacteria.” Skyy only uses stainless steel tubs for her magnificent pedicures at As U Wish. . One of Skyy’s missions is to educate her client. She feels that the technician needs to explain everything that they are doing to the client and if the client wants a sculptured, overlay, gel or acrylic nail to learn what will happen to their nails if they proceed and how best to take care of them. “A lot of people will sacrifice going to a good spa where they can get the education and pay the extra dollars, they’re going for quickness and their nails will be damaged within a week or two.”
Her salon doesn’t carry a lot of retail products, “we only put up for sale what works and what we know is in it (the product).” She doesn’t believe in gimmicks, she hates it when people say something is good because other people say it, she feels that you really need to know about the product before you endorse it to your clients. The salon carries Zoya, OPI, Essie and Nail Trind products.
Her salon, as I said before is an intimate place. There are three clocks on the wall and none of them tell the correct time. This was done so that the client will lose themselves in the treatment and relax. The spa is a warm and comforting place, the colors were chosen to relax and soothe .The walls are done in red, yellow, and orange with blue trim. As Skyy said, “Red is for love, orange is for calm, blue is tranquility and yellow is for friendship.” Wednesday is baby day at the spa. Mothers bring in their infants while they receive a manicure, pedicure or waxing and if a baby wakes up fussy, the colors (and the restful atmosphere) calms them down.

The pedicure chairs are wicker and recline slightly. They have beautiful toss pillows that let you sink into them. Dalila is a charming young woman who grew up in spas. When she was a child, her mom owned a spa and now she consults with various spas where she lives. Dalila has a sunny smile and a friendly open manner. After a bit of discussion we decide to go with the “Blue Lagoon” pedicure. A stainless steel tub is filled with lavender water combined with a blend of peppermint fragrance and eucalyptus oil. Your feet rest on smooth stones placed in the bottom of the tub and after buffing, soaking and cleaning cuticles a peppermint shea butter sugar cream scrub is applied to your feet and calves, followed by a massage. The scrub is incredible, since it combines shea butter and exfoliants; your skin is not only cleansed, but moisturized at the same time. Then my feet were covered in warm paraffin and wrapped with hot towels. I felt energized, soothed and relaxed at the same time. Bliss!
There are many wonderful pedicures to try at As U Wish. They really are recipes that Skyy works on until perfection. “Milk Me Away” is a pedicure that is a warm bath of whole milk with a blend of vanilla oil and a sweet almond butter shea butter sugar cream scrub. “The Red Sea” is a jasmine scented foot bath, your feet rest on a bed of vanilla brown sugar with lemongrass and tangerine oil, along with a hot vanilla brown sugar cream scrub. If you have extremely dry feet, try the “Nine-One-One” pedicure. It comes with a sea salt scrub rubdown, cucumber heel therapy cream and a tea tree sea mud wrap with eucalyptus oil. There’s even a manicure for guys called, “Toetally Mister.”
There’s also a variety of manicures, “Spa Mani’s of 8 Cream flavors”; they are manicures that come with a warm silky cream of your choice (black cherry and nutmeg, mango and coconut, peach and ginseng, pear and dandelion, cran-berry, tangerine and lemongrass, lavender and jojoba, vanilla shimmer) along with the standard manicure. There’s also French and paraffin manicures as well as a choice of sculptured nails.
Skyy also offers waxing; from eyebrow to Brazilian to back, all at reasonable prices.
The clientele are professionals whose age range is from their late 20′s to early 40′s. Elisa Bartner is a 20 something, legal eagle who was in having her nails done. She’s getting married in the spring and Skyy will be beautifying the bridal party. “It’s the best place ever!” she exclaimed to me, “My favorite pedicure is the nine-one-one. I love the mask; it makes my feet feel soft and supple. This is the only place I’ve ever gone to where the pedicure lasted a month.”
It’s very hard to leave As U Wish. Skyy has created a place where it’s easy to sit, relax and forget about the rest of the world. She is so knowledgeable, approachable, funny, giving and delightful to talk to, that you feel like you’ve made a friend. It would have been so easy to stay and gossip about everything and anything and forget about obligations of the day.
If you are looking for an incredible spa experience- a pedicure or a manicure that you won’t get anywhere else, do make the trip to visit Skyy and her wonderful team at As U Wish Nail Spa. They’ll make sure that your nail shape fits your hands, that the polish is complementary to your skin tone. They won’t try to sell you items you don’t need. You’ll walk out with a thousand and one tips on how to take care not only your nails but yourself. How many places do you go to have your nails done and get hugged when it’s time to leave? And, yes I’ll be coming back to have my nails beautified.
Here are a few tips from Skyy and Dalila that I am going to pass on to you. Vitamin E will help your nails grow, do moisturize your hands and feet, but look for a moisture cream instead of a lotion. Cream is heavier and will skin in as opposed to slide off your skin. Pedicures are very important in the winter time. Your feet are stuffed into heavy sock and boots. They can’t breathe and need as much if not more TLC in the winter than the summer. While this summer’s hottest color is coral, it’s not for everyone, try mauve shades instead. In manicures and pedicures the polish that will be hot is sheer to white; like a French manicure, but paler.

Women For Hire Expo

It’s easy to get confused watching a fashion show. Sometimes a designer will have an outfit sashaying down the runway that makes you shake your head, wondering about its wearability. The trick is to break the outfit down to its basic components. I learned that trick when I saw an interview with Andre Leon Talley. During the interview, he said when you’re watching a fashion show, you need to break down the outfit you see on the runway into separate pieces. You must understand that sometimes a designer will show an over-the-top look on a runway, but if you break it down, you’ll see some very wearable items. I used his advice when I saw the Heatherette show, and it worked. Heatherette showed some very cute hooded jackets with fake fur hooded linings over dresses. The outfits were okay, but separately, the pieces were adorable. The next time you catch a show, whether you’re in the tents or watching it from the comfort of your couch, try that trick. It works.

Aliens of the Deep
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
I saw Aliens of the Deep last night. It’s an IMAX movie about James Cameron’s expeditions under deep and I do mean deep ocean water. The weird thing about IMAX movies is that they give you these really weird glasses so when you’re watching the film, everything feels 3D. And it does, I found myself ducking when machinery seemed to jump out towards me and lost half my nachos when a giant squid suddenly appeared onscreen.
I was enthralled with this incredible underwater panorama, but was disappointed on the lack of science. It seemed strange to me to hear marine biologists saying things like, “oh that’s cool” or “right on.” C’mon I don’t think America is so dumb that they couldn’t understand a bit more science than, “look at the fish, it’s ugly.” I would have loved more information about the rills they were diving into, and that’s the thing, deep ocean caverns are called rills, and (argh) they didn’t even use the word once! Halfway through the film, and again, should I call it a documentary, film or promotional material? I ask that because it seemed that Cameron switched gears from talking about the mystery, beauty of the ocean, and the need to explore and understand it, to how important it was to continue space exploration. They started throwing in CGI effect about possible missions to Jupiter’s moons and the ending was another CGI (computer generated image) of the real life biologists meeting aliens in another world. Is it me, or is there a problem here?
I also hated the fact that the, whatever it is, isn’t even an hour long. I was lucky, I got in for free, but if you’re paying $15 or so for a movie, shouldn’t you get to be in a nice warm theater for at least an hour before you have to outside and freeze again?
Speaking of drama, I was able to run home and catch Project Runway. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I was that Morgan was finally eliminated as a model. What a psycho! Not only did she try to sabotage the work of almost every designer she modeled for on the show, you never knew if she’d be late, on time or what. About a week or so before, I saw an interview with the designers of Heatherette, and they’d shown clips of their shows; Morgan was on the catwalk. So, it’s not like she needed the money or exposure. I hoped and prayed like Chelsea, Diana, Meg and almost everyone else I know that Wendy was going to be eliminated. Instead they got rid of Kevin, even though Wendy’s outfit fell apart on the runway. Did you see the clips of the forthcoming show? Then you know that she starts getting really ballistic. Oh, I am soo excited; do we finally see the end of Wendy?
My prediction for the three designers who make it to Fashion Week are; Kara, Austin and Jay. Sorry Chelsea, but I don’t think Robert’s going to make it, but yes, he is cute.
So when life is getting a bit dramatic, or you’re just hating the grey skies of winter, whip on these babies.

Designer Robert Marc was inspired by the romantic island that’s pictured in the 1950 movie, Stromboli. There’s a scene where beauteous Ingrid Bergman is seduced by sexy Roberto Rosselini. The island inspired him to create these fantabulously wonderful burgundy sunglasses. Did I mention that they’re lined in pink! PINK! Wear them now to remind you of sunnier days, wear them when it’s sunny, so you can look ever so chic. Wear them when it’s miserable out, and you’ll feel beautiful. Need I mention that sunglasses are great for flirting? The style is 539 and can be purchased at any Robert Marc boutique in New York,

I-Bella

There is a new line of body care and home collection that you just have to try for yourself. i-bella is a line that combines vitamins C and E and protects your skin from sun damage. The i-bella products contain the same fantastic fresh scent in all of their products. It’s the perfect winter perk-up. The fragrance is a combination of chamomile, essences of pear, pineapple, white peony and hyacinth. It soothes and lifts you at the same time. The other ingredients in the rejuvenating body lotion and rejuvenating hand lotion are aloe barbadensis leaf extract, cucumber fruit extract, sweet almond oil, chamomile, olive leaf extract, rosa canina extract and other goodies.

My poor hands are so dry from the combination of cold outdoor and dry heat indoors, that the first time I squirted the hand lotion on my skin, it immediately soaked in. I couldn’t mush it around like I would normally do with lotion. Your skin drinks this moisturizing potion instantly. I was amazed. The body lotion is fantastic to use after stepping out of the shower. Spritz the linen spray on your bed and you’ll feel like you are in the tropics.
i-bella also has a moisturizing body wash that will help you face the day. You can purchase ibella at http://www.i-bella.com or http://www.gbsbeauty.com
As February gets closer and closer and we start thinking more about VDay, I came across a nifty contest that you might be interested in trying. Philanthropist Henri Zimand, in honor and loving memory of his wife, is sponsoring a love letter contest. He’ll be giving away over 100 free Central Park Horse and Carriage rides during the Valentine’s Day weekend, February 11 – 14th. The grand prize love letter writer wins a trip to Monte Carlo.
Zimand is offering this contest to promote the positive effect of love and support can have on the terminally ill. He lost his wife, Anda to breast cancer in 2003 and created a non-profit organization, Love, Anda in memory of his wife. The organization was created to spread love and positive survivorship in the face of cancer adversity. Mrs. Zimand, throughout her life and even during her fight with cancer, was characterized by her enormous love of life, her husband and her family.
The love letters will be judged on originality, expression of love and demonstration of passion. The deadline for the love letters is February 10th. Letters can either be faxed in to 213-624-0712 or emailed to

Award winning Scottish composer Craig Armstrong will be performing two rare concerts in the United States on January 26th at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah and February 1st at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York City. On both evenings Craig will be playing material from his latest Sanctuary release, “Piano Works”, his most compelling solo work to date.
Craig Armstrong is perhaps best known for his classical compositions and film scores. His many credits include the Baz Luhrmann hits “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge” (for which he received a Golden Globe). Recent soundtrack work includes composing the scores to the Golden Globe nominated ‘Ray’, Robert Redford’s ‘The Clearing’, Philip Noyce’s adaptation of the Graham Greene novel “The Quiet American”, Peter Mullan’s “The Magdalene Sisters”, and Richard Curtis’s “Love Actually”.
Film compositions aside Armstrong has also collaborated with pop artists such as Massive Attack, Madonna, U2, The Future Sound of London, and Bjork. Craig’s work with Massive Attack (he composed “Weatherstorm” and “Heat Miser” for their Protection album) led to Armstrong signing to their record label, Melankolic, releasing his first solo album, “The Space Between Us” (1998). The follow-up, “As If To Nothing” (2002), featured a series of collaborations with artists including Bono, Mogwai and Evan Dando.
The recent “Piano Works” sessions mark a radical departure for Armstrong, recorded mainly in a Parisian theatre, the album features solo piano versions of his film themes – including ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet’, tracks he composed for Massive Attack and entirely new pieces. During the recording of “Piano Works” Craig collaborated with the celebrated Berlin based lap-top poet and electronic artiste AGF on “Piano Works”, who added a contemporary electronic element to the pieces, AGF will be accompanying Craig at both performances. Prior to Craig’s performance at Sundance there will be a screening of the film ‘Piano Works’ which is an accompanying piece to the album. Filmed on 16mm in Paris – in the Eclair Studio’s home to the new wave French cinema movement – it’s a beautiful film directed by the British director David Barnard.
Armstrong’s live performances of “Piano Works” will showcase the most unforgettable compositions of his career, and will be a rare US sighting of an incredibly gifted artist not to be missed.
The “SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE” said, “Armstrong goes minimalist but achieves maximal effects on 19 tracks for solo piano. His compositions are autumnal, sparely ornamented, deeply emotional, but not sentimental, and Armstrong subjects his instrument to subtle electronic treatments, creating ambient ripples and shimmers akin to Harold Budd’s work with Brian Eno.”
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR – “Blessed with an angel’s touch on the keyboard….. Evoke(s) the understated beauty of Debussy and Satie, and yet sound as modern as this minute.”

Blizzard of ’05
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
How did you like the Blizzard of ’05? I wasn’t thrilled with it, but Sophie the Wonder Dog loved it. She’s only 17″ high, and was flinging herself in and out of snowdrifts twice her size. She kept zigging and zagging down the street, burying her nose into the snow, raising it and then laughing. At least one of us was happy.
I have to admit that I am thrilled with the mukluks I bought; they’ve been keeping my feet toasty warm. I wish all my shoes and boots are as comfy. What’s your favorite cold weather outfit? Send me an email and let me know; who knows, you might find yourself in print!
When you are going out, you want your clothes to look their best. Sweaters should be soft, clean and smell nice. Whites should be white and colors should be vibrant, right? We all have horror stories about what’s happened when our stuff has either been brutally attacked by over-zealous cleansers, crazed dry-cleaners and the like. Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Wieber have been there, done that and instead of just being frustrated with the entire cleaning deal, created their own line of heavenly smelling, gentle and effective solutions, accessories and gift baskets. They created The Laundress (http://www.thelaundress.com) to help our sweaters, our whites and our delicate silky things stay as fresh and beautiful as they were nestled in the stores waiting to come home with us.

The Laundress has four unique scents; Classic, it’s their signature scent – is a sweet musk combined with citrus, ylang, ylang and sandalwood undertones to remind you of a fresh breeze wafting through laundry drying in the sun. The Laundress Baby is formulated for a baby’s tender skin, but can be used by adults too. The scent is warm, soft with a long lasting essence of vanilla musk, bergamot and lavender. The Laundress Lady scent appeals to men and women with its combination of amber, citrus and green herbal notes to balance the scent. The Laundress Cedar is the perfect scent to clean and protect your woolens, cashmeres and closets. The scent is a combination of cedarwood oil, frankincense, spices and citrus zest.
The Laundress Wool & Cashmere shampoo is a combination of cedar extracts with a sulfate-free shampoo that will keep your cashmeres and wools looking their best for a long time. You can use the product in a machine or by hand.
They also make Crease Release; it’s a spray on solution that removes wrinkles from packed clothing. Stain Solution is a pre-treater that will knock any stain on its knees. Their Fabric Fresh will make stored clothing sweeter, disinfect hotel sheets and zap any odors from travel weary clothes. You might want to invest in their Static Solution to prevent zappage on cold winter days.
The Laundress has a wonderful line of accessories; from scented squares to garment bags. They make gift baskets or “buckets” for any occasion.

You can view and purchase the complete line at http://www.thelaundress.com, or stop in at Bergdorf Goodman, 754 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY, 646-735-5241,Bloom, 43 Madison Street, Sag Harbour, NY, 631-725-5940, Lagoon Linens, 96 Spruce Street, Cedarhurst, NY, 516-569-9500, Malia Mills, 199 Mulberry Street, Between Spring & Kenmare, New York, NY, 212-625-2311, New London Pharmacy, 246 8th Avenue, New York, NY, 212-243-4987

Pink Vespas
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
I was walking down the street yesterday, minding my own business, when I noticed a man unloading pink Vespas from a truck. I stopped so fast, that three people bumped into me (don’t try this at home). I was transfixed and didn’t mind that I had accidentally done a 360 on the sidewalk. PINK! Beauteous pink Vespas sitting there on the sidewalk, looking so cool, so pretty, so spring. For one brief second I forgot I was freezing.

It was exactly this color, but not this Vespa. The one in the picture is in a warm town, and I’m here in New York City – a non-tropical place.

Valentine’s Day is getting closer. I noticed candy hearts, chocolate boxes wrapped in pink, lovers dice and other reminders of the holiday in the stores recently.
If you’re gearing up for VDay, or just want a nice present for yourself, take a look at these charming necklaces from Esposito Jewelry.

Either necklace would be a great birthday or Valentine’s Day present (hint, hint). The organza ribbon gives the necklaces a great romantic springtime feel. You’ll be able to wear them through al four seasons. The pendants are sterling silver with CZ accents.
When you do visit their website, http://www.esposito-jewelry.com, you’ll see jewelry that has a light, air feel about it. The company is family owned and was founded in 1910. Joseph Esposito is fourth generation jeweler and head of the firm, which is based in Rhode Island.

The jewelry offered on the website is sterling silver, 14K gold, sterling silver and gold, and cubic zirconium. There’s free shipping on almost every item and the jewelry is reasonably priced

The problem with the website is once you start browsing, you’ll find it hard to stop. They’ve got some great earrings for day and a few pairs that would look great at night with either your hair up, or you could wear your hair loose and let the sparkle wink through your locks.
Do you know anyone who’s not on a diet? No, I’m not making a joke, but it does seem that almost everyone I know is on Atkins, The Zone, South Beach or other diet. Me? I’m hypoglycemic, this means I can only look at chocolate and wave longingly at cakes.
It’s really hard to navigate through all the aisles, bins and boxes of diet food and find something that actually tastes good to eat.
Helen Brand and Eric Robespierre know our pain. Helen is a personal trainer and diet coach. She’s been helping clients become their best for over twenty years. Helen overcame childhood obesity and understands what it’s like to have that ravening hunger make you slightly crazed until you’ve eaten your third jar of something or other – my childhood weakness – pickles, just don’t ask okay?
Eric Robespierre has an extensive background in advertising. Among the accounts he’s worked on are Danskin, Bordens, Izod Lacoste and the Yankees. And like most of us, was a bit overweight.
The two met on a plane. One in-flight conversation led to two of them to create a guide for everyone who is going through diet pains.

Their book, The Yummy Hunter’s Guide: The best-Tasting, Low-Calorie Foods and Where to Shop For Them, tells you what tastes great, what to stay away from, and all are dietetic and healthy foods. Not only did they contribute, but also they got opinions from battle weary dieters who refused to just eat hay anymore. This is a guidebook for eating healthy and enjoying your food at the same time. If you’ve ever dieted, you know what I mean when I say that’s hard to do. You can purchase the book at their website www.yummyhunters.com or by calling 1-888-296-3913. To find out where their next personal appearance will be, please go to http://www.yummyhunters.com/events.php
Jisu
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
Last night was “Project Runway” night, was it on in your house? You know I couldn’t stay away, even with a deadline looming up at me; I just had to plonk myself on the couch and find out if this was the week that Wendy finally got the boot. I’m still reeling in shock that they let her stay, despite the fact that her swimsuit didn’t have a bottom. I am not surprised that Alexandra had to leave, but am wondering why it took the judges so long to do it. Her designs were pretty basic; there wasn’t anything truly unique or wonderful about them. Her clothes didn’t sing or talk.
Speaking of singing, doesn’t this happen to you when you’re shopping – you wander through the aisles just looking, and then, and then, and then you see it. It could be anything: a shoe, a bag, a blouse or pants. But it speaks to you. You hear it whisper slowly and quietly how wonderful the two of you will be together. How every time you wear them, life will be incredible.
That’s what I heard when I saw Jill Taft’s line of accessories. Jisu is all about divine workmanship, clever little details, wonderful color, luxurious fabrics and dreams. Only someone who knows the ins and outs of fashion, and what women crave could design this bag and the entire Jisu line.

It’s cool, sophisticated and tells the world that you are an amazing fabulous woman. It whispers to you that life is a fun, flirty luxurious adventure, and shouldn’t it be that? The color is happy, the details are beautifully done, and you can actually put things inside it. It’s from her forthcoming spring/summer 2005 collection. Don’t look too long, if you do like it, hurry and get it. Ever since Jill turned from modeling high fashion to designing accessories, her collections have sold out almost immediately after being placed on display.
For years Jill was a model based in Paris, Milan and London. Jill worked with some of the world’s most creative geniuses, including Armani. Being based in Europe, Jill was able to observe firsthand the easy elegance and chic that European women seem to be born with; it’s as though they have that extra fashion gene. It’s like they instinctively know that midnight blue at night can be sexier than black. Or that you can wear very masculine cut clothing, but if the design is made with feminine luxurious fabrics, you automatically make everyone in the room pant (in a very good way).
Jisu’s collections are limited editions. Jill felt that it would keep the integrity of the line and preserve the uniqueness of each creation. The philosophy behind the line is that Jill “realizes the importance of seeing women as individuals rather than a group.”.
When you look at one of Jisu’s accessories, you understand that it’s just the way women are; strong, sleek, smart and beautiful.
Jisu’s designs are cutting edge, with exquisite detail work and old fashioned workmanship. The materials (leather, suede and python) are imported from Italy. Each design is made here in New York City.
Now I’m sure you know by now that the two hot trends for spring are metallics and coral. You’re probably starting to notice that women are carrying gold bags in different shapes and sizes during the day. Coral in every hue from pastel to bold will be worn everywhere and anywhere.

This Jisu design is almost an hommage to the ideal of a perfect circle. It’s clean, modern and sexy. It’s the bag that will carry you from day into night. While Jisu doesn’t ascribe to color or trend reports, or fashion forecasts, they are referenced. Think of the woman who always seems to know where the fashion wind will blow instinctively and you have Jill Taft. If you study her line, you’ll be able to see hints of trends to come.

Jisu’s bags mix up color combinations daringly. What you may think won’t work, does with these bags. It’s all about the proportion of color, shape and detail that balances everything.
These accessories move easily between whimsy and practicality; femininity and strength. They are made well enough to be treasured and passed down to a younger generation. They are new classics; and by that I mean that the designs are unique and clever enough to stand on their own. They’re unusual but not faddy, trendy yet clean.
When you do look at them and touch them, your mouth will water from the softness of the fabrics, your eyes will tear from their deliciousness and you’ll find yourself saying that you definitely need one or three.
You can find Jisu accessories at high end boutiques around the world. In New York City they can be found at Verve (353 Bleecker Street), Blue Bag (266 Elizabeth Street) and Sorelle Firenze (139½ Reade Street). Her line is coming to Wink soon, and Jisu will be a partner in Burrow, a designer Co-op that will open on Crosby Street in Early February. To view her designs, please go to her website, http://www.jisuaccessories.com

I love the city, always have and always will. Heck, I was born across the street from Gracie Mansion. Yet there are times when I just want to leave for a day, and see something exotic like, oh I don’t know, maybe a lawn?

And there are times when you’ve found something amazing like a Art Deco Vanity table at the 23rd Street Flea Market, and you’re wondering how to get it home quickly. Grab a Zipcar instead of a cab.
What’s a Zipcar?

Zipcars can be found here in New York City, Boston and Washington DC. You can rent a car by the hour instead of the day. Taking some friends out to lunch outside of Manhattan, going to the airport, or snagging a fabulous bureau? Use a zipcar. Rates start at $8,00 an hour and that includes insurance, gas, maintenance, and oh my gosh – designated parking. Need the car for a day? Rates start at $59.00
There’s a $25.00 application fee, a $100 refundable deposit, and they have monthly rental plans starting at $50.00. You can rent a BMW or Volvo to impress a client, a MINI Cooper to scope out the boys, or you can change into any of the other 20 models just like you switch shoes.
To learn more about Zipcars, apply for membership or just look at the pretty cars, go to their website, http://www.zipcar.com

Saturday night I went to the Tribeca Grand to see the Kaiser Chiefs. They’re a hot new band from Leeds, England. The music is bight and shiny Britpop. Listen very closely, and you’ll swear you’ll hear a smidgen of Madness, Thin Lizzy, some wonky but fun 60′s garage, and a dram of the early Who’s bass lines. Fun, funky, quirky, hot, these are some of the many adjectives I could use to describe them. Listen to their single, “I Predict A Riot” and it will all become clear.
They’ve toured with Franz Ferdinand, and are touring the states right now, spiking everyone’s interest with their mini-shows. Did I mention that they were very easy on the eye? If you want to listen, look, or read more about them, go to their website http://www.kaiserchiefs.co.uk/ They’ll be back in New York, February 12th, playing North Six in Williamsburg. They’re definitely worth the trek to Billyburg.
I’m glad I went to the Tribeca Grand, because I forgot how slammed they get on the weekends. It was a serious convention of eye candy for both genders. If you want to go out some place glam, but not crazy, do check out the Tribeca Grand. At night, the lobby becomes a huge lounge; dancing happens in that weird room (I never remember the name) in the back behind the bar. Good music back there, but you’ll feel like you’re in someone’s rec room from the 70′s – a bit too much Lucite for my taste. Decent sized drinks and a great excuse to flirt.
And now…another great excuse for going out, flirting, and having a good time. Only this time around, your pooch can be flirty too. Tonight the Woof Spa is hosting a Leashes and Lovers’ event, “Whine and Art.” It’s their January cocktail party, honoring Tillamook Cheddar, canine artist. Tillamook is a Brooklyn based Jack Russell Terrier whose work has been shown in Europe and throughout the U.S. To view Tillamook’s abstract art, please go to her website, http://www.tillamookcheddar.com/ Tonight’s event boasts an open bar and hors d’oeuvres for both you and your pooch.

When: Tuesday, January 18th, 7PM – 9PM
Where: Woof Spa, 678 Hudson Street (between 13 &14th Streets)

I’m going to get a bit serious right now, but it’s for a good cause. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and this is a very good thing. But, women need to be aware and do home examinations every month. If you’ve ever done one yourself, you know it can (sometimes) be a bit confusing. Did you already hit that spot? Were you supposed to go only one way? What do I do now?

It’s enough to make you not want to do a self-exam, but you know you can’t quit doing them. Mark for Life has a breast self-exam kit that will definitely help you and de-mystify the whole deal.
The Mark for Life kit consists of a form fitting tee that has circles and arrows that shows you how to do the exam. If you do find a lump or bump, you can mark it on the shirt with the enclosed pen.
Mark for Life’s mission is to increase awareness of the importance of breast self-exams. 70% of all breast cancer is found via self-examination. Did you know that when found early, 96% of breast cancer patients survive. The tees come in sizes from 32A to 44DD and costs $24.99. You can purchase the Mark for Life kit at their website, www.markforlife.com, Intimacy on Madison Avenue, and the Glen Falls Hospital Hospitality Shop, 100 Park Street, Glen Falls, NY.
If you’re between 18-35 and want to see a Roundabout Theatre Company production, join Hip Tix. The organization gives discounts to theatergoers; you see only the shows you want to see. You’ll even have opportunities to have drinks with the cast. There’s no membership fee, no catch. Just go to their website, http://www.hiptix.com and sign up.
