Olive Leaf Wholeness Center and Spa
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
Last night I went to the opening of a new spa in Gramercy Park. The Olive Leaf Wholeness Center and Spa is a two level holistic spa. Besides the usual facials and massages, they also offer some unusual treatments. Here you’ll find bamboo facials, blue oil steam facials, Caribbean mud body and foot wraps, and the vitamin tea eye wrap.
I loved the way it was decorated with a palette of sage, beige and earth tones. The general effect was soft, tranquil, and serene. I felt so calm and rested, I began envisioning re-doing my apartment in those colors; using their minimalistic approach to design. I could start tossing items that night, and then hit the paint store in the morning. Then I remembered how many shoes I own, my handbag wall, and my vintage hat collection. I’m not sure that minimalism is for me.
The Olive Leaf Wholeness Center is located at 145 East 23rd Street, between Lexington and 3rd avenues. To learn more about the spa and what it offers, visit their website, http://www.olwcnyc.com. To make an appointment for a facial, body wrap, or reflexology session, call at 212-477-0405.
So did your jaw fit the floor when the final three were announced at the end of Project Runway? I am in shock. I may just stay under my bed until spring. I can’t believe that psychotic Wendy is in the final three. I am flabbergasted that they picked a woman who designs the same things over and over again. A designer, who couldn’t finish a hem on most of her pieces, is now going to have a collection shown under the tents this week.
There are so many fun events going on around town, you’d think it’s spring. Here’s just a sampling of what’s going on in Gotham. . But first, I must tell you about a fabulous sale!

Three days left before Valentine’s Day!
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
You have three days left before Valentine’s Day! Have you gotten your gift yet? Here’s a gift that I’d like to bestow to many men in Manhattan; the name of a good tailor. Why am I saying this? Today I noticed an overabundance of men who were suffering from V.B.P. (very bad pants), T.W.S. (too wide shoulders) or both. Someone needs to grab these men, bonk them over the head with a soft implement repeatedly until they learn that pants need hems. You are supposed to have a “break” at the end of a pant leg, not a puddle. And what is with the over wide shoulders on blazers? The worst public example of this is Bernard Kerik’s blazers. The shoulders on his jackets are wider than the rest of him. The shoulder seam of a blazer or jacket if you will, should match to your natural shoulder. If it doesn’t, the jacket is too big.
If you’re guilty of these fashion faux pas, and wonder why you can’t get a date, no woman in her right mind wants to go out with someone who looks like he’s wearing Herman Munster’s cast-offs. I don’t care if I sound superficial; if a guy can’t be bothered to hem his pants, I can’t help but wonder what else he can’t be bothered to do for himself or another person.
And I’m seeing this during one of the holiest times if the year, Fashion Week! It’s enough to make a fashionista weep.
Speaking of fashion, not only was fall fashion unveiled under the tents, so was a commode. Not just any commode, Kohler’s Purist Hatbox Seat.
It really is ground-breaking in design. The Purist utilizes a very quiet .2 horsepower electric pump that’s enclosed within the toilet bowl. Powerful flushing is provided by 1.6 gallons of water. While the Purist Hat Box looks stream-lined, it was designed using ergonomics and complies with the height requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Purist Hat Box has Kohler’s own “Comfort Height” comfortable chair height seating that works with a variety of ages and statures. And the seat was designed with “Quiet Close.” The “QC” prevents seat slams, and as the brochure says, “eliminates unnecessary contact with the underside of the seat.” Women instinctually understand that one. I mean, who hasn’t fallen in at one time or another?
If you’re renovating your abode, or building from the ground up, do take a look at this sleek, sexy commode. It comes in white, biscuit, ice grey, almond, sand bar, and thunder grey. To find out more about the seat, please go to http://www.kohler.com/hatbox or call Kohler at 1-800-4-KOHLER.

Aromatherapy
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
During the winter if you’re daring enough to open your windows; you’ll either be deluged with snow, rain, or a horrible draft. Offices get extra stuffy too. Your nose hurts from smelling stale air, but you can’t very well drag scented candles to work. Leaving anything burning at home when you’re not there is dangerous. You want, no you need to smell something nice instead of gunk all the time.

Here’s a safe alternative that will make any room smell like spring. Stick Scents is the latest trend in aromatherapy. Instead of candles, incense or anything goopy, Stick scents uses porous reeds to diffuse the fragrance into the air. Simply place the reeds into the jar of fragrant oils and voila! You have delightfully delicate aromas tickling your nose instead of stale, stuffy air. Stick Scents come in four blends: Sea Petals – blends of peach, pineapple, citrus, cedar, cyclamen and violet, Green Apple – peach, pear, green apple, musk and berry, English Garden – melon, cyclamen, citrus, jasmine, rose, violet and musk, Morning Dew – honey suckle, musk, jasmine, violet, melon and rose.
Each blend creates a light subtle not overpowering scent. One bottle fragrances any size room. I know, I kept moving mine about my apartment. The scent never overpowered me nor gave me the urge to stick my head out a window.
They’re decorative and safe. You can keep Scent Sticks in your office, at home, or wherever you want a little fragrance. Stick Scents can be purchased at target.com

Fashion Week
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
I finally got to watch the Project Runway episode I missed. It was last week’s – Wendy goes ballistic and Robert gets eliminated (sorry Chelsea). I do realize that Robert’s outfit wasn’t perfect, but Wendy’s was the worst design. It was dowdy and looked almost like what they were already wearing. There wasn’t any innovation and who puts pleats on the sides of pants? Eeeuw! Yet, they still didn’t eliminate her. Could it be that the producers are afraid of her? I mean she is just a tad bit unbalanced. Jay even called her a “cockroach.”
And if you didn’t know it’s Fashion Week. So many people are of running around, going crazy and making snarky comments. What’s the word on fall’s designs? Bright colors, tons of green everywhere in every hue, and poufy skirts. POUFY SKIRTS??! Are they nuts? No one can wear a pouf well unless they’re seven feet tall and weigh six pounds. Can anyone tell me why a normal sized woman wants to look larger around the waist and hips? Please, they’re going to sell you the idea that if you wear a tight-fitting or close to the body top above the pouf, you’ll look slim and adorable. No, you won’t, you’ll look like a tacky lampshade from the 50′s.
It’s enough to make you want to sew. I did try once, but I kept breaking all the machines in Home EC. My teacher almost had a meltdown over that. Do you think she even tossed the thought around her brain about letting me near a stove? This is why I do take-a-way really well.
If Project Runway or Fashion Week has given you the creative urge, check out Sheila Walker Studio. They have fun workshops or labs, (three hours $125) and you can create your own string bikini, make your own rock star tees or learn “survival sewing.” There are six-week workshops or labs where you can focus on creating your own wardrobe. If you’re all thumbs, don’t despair! They also have private instruction. Sheila Walker Studio, 106 Duane St., 2nd Fl. (Church St. & Broadway) TriBeCa, 212-732-8955, http://www.sheilawalkerstudio.com

Did you have a nice weekend? I met up with a friend at the Wet Bar inside the W on Lex and 39th. It’s dark, cozy and the bartenders are dishy. Check it out the next time you want to catch up with someone. They have the obligatory booths and barstools, but couches, chairs and loveseats are scattered around, giving off a nice, relaxed lounge vibe where you can natter on for hours. The air is gently perfumed by the dozens of lit candles; the scent is fresh and very subtle.
Did you know that make up artist Kevyn Aucoin was born February 14, 1962? He was a Valentine’s baby! And in many ways he played Cupid throughout his life. Maybe that’s why Kevyn Aucoin Beauty has delightful doings for Valentine’s Day.

The company is releasing a special limited edition, “Gift of Love Cards.” They’re sold in a set of five and each card has contains a different quote about love and life from Kevyn. Here’s two of them; “It is by celebrating the differences in others that we can begin to accept our own individuality.” “For me beauty is synonymous with uniqueness.”
It’s a wonderful way to show the special people in your life that you do care for them. Would you like a gift for you? Well, get yourself over to Henri Bendel because Kevyn Aucoin Beauty will have their make up team out to show you how to be the perfect Valentine. If you purchase the “Gift of Love Cards” (only $15.00) your beauty makeover is free. This event is going on from February 12- 14.

I had my first experience with caviar at the age of eight. Mom and I were shopping up and down the Miracle Mile (for non-Long Islandites, it’s a shopping area in Manhasset), we had worked up quite an appetite. Shopping is very hard work. Mom and I looked at each other and decided to get a snack. Inside the restaurant, I looked over the menu, when I noticed listed under tea sandwiches; “caviar sandwich.” I looked at mom, “Mommy, what’s caviar?”
Mom looked over her menu at me and smiled, “Honey, you don’t want that. It’s very salty and crunchy. You won’t like it.”
The waitress overheard our conversation, and smilingly offered to give me one just to taste. It came on a tiny plate atop a paper doily. The sandwich was cut on the diagonal, and the bread was more like a hard cracker than the soft bread an eight year old was used to handling. I took a bite. Crunch, crunch, crunch. The saltiness overwhelmed my taste buds and I must have made quite a face because the waitress and my mom couldn’t stop laughing. It took me awhile to get over the experience.
And now I found something with caviar that’s delicious and zero calories. You don’t eat it, you wear it.

Did you know that caviar is fantastic for your skin? It contains 23 to 26% protein and essential amino acids; is high in vitamins – like A (retinol), B, E, D, B2 and B6, and is a great source of Marine DNA. This means that caviar has very strong hydrating and conditioning properties. The Marine DNA, protein and essential amino acids stimulate cell regeneration.
The Signature Caviar Line created by Kerstin Florian International not only contains Seruga Caviar from the Caspian Sea; it also has Co-Enzyme A, a healing anti-oxidant, caffeine as a toning anti-oxidant and the Chinese herb Chai Hu (Bupleurum Extract). In other words, these products are the ultimate in an anti-aging skin regimen.
I tried the Caviar Eye Creme, the Caviar Age-Defense, The Caviar Night Creme and the Caviar Firming Body Complex for a period of time. The products have a very pleasant, light scent and they absorbed very quickly into my dry winter skin.
The eye creme comes in a pump, this is a wonderful idea. You get a small measured dose on your finger. No longer will you have to fight to put the excess creme back into the tub. The eye creme is feather light, neither greasy nor heavy. It banishes dark circles under the eyes, minimizes fine lines, puffiness and brightens. The caviar is aided with caffeine and green tea extract.

The Caviar Age-Defense very quickly became a favorite part of my morning regimen. Why? It sinks into your skin immediately. No more long waits until you can safely apply your base. It made my skin feel smoother and supple. Applying base was a breeze. Besides caviar, this also contains rose flower oil, Co-enzyme A and Chai Hu (firming agent). The combination of the caviar, firming agents and anti-aging ingredients reduce fine lines and really does make your skin smooth and very soft.
After a shower, the Caviar Firming Body Complex is a real treat, It feels luxurious, slightly sinful and your body will love you for it. It also contains anti-aging ingredients and vitamins, definitely skin food.
The Night Creme is rich, thick, but seeps into your pores as quickly as the Age-Defense. Not only does it contain caviar, it also contains green tea, shea butter and seaweed. The first few times I tried it, my skin tingled a bit, but I continued, after a day or two that stopped.
How were the results of my road testing? Recently I had a facial and the aesthetician remarked on how nice my skin looked and felt. This was after using it a little over a week.
I give high marks to this line. It’s not heavily perfumed, lightweight, and absorbs easily into your skin. I’ve only used it for a little over two weeks; but my skin feels soft and looks healthy. Unlike some other moisturizers, there isn’t any leftover “greasiness” or heaviness on your skin. The day and night cremes came with little scoop applicators, I couldn’t deal with those. Too tiny for me, the cremes were easier (for me) to manipulate by hand.
Kerstin Florin International has been in business for over 40 years. Their other product lines include: Spa Face, Spa Body, Spa Sun, and a complete line of skin care for men. Their products and services (facials, body and foot treatments) can be found at exclusive spas worldwide. Some of the spas are; The Fairmont Plaza in NYV, W Hotel in Times Square, Willow Stream Spas at the Fairmont, various Fairmont resorts, Boca Raton Resort and Club and many more.
Kerstinflorian.com lists the spas were you can find this wonderful line and product information. Call 888-kerstin to find an affiliated spa near you.

Accessories
By title="Email P.J. Gach" alt="Email P.J. Gach"> P.J. Gach
So you love accessories. When you’re in Bloomies, do you have to fight the urge to grab every bag that tickles your fancy, grab someone else’s charge card, the run out the door screaming in glee? Have you stood at your favorite designer’s shop staring with naked lust at his latest bag? Do you have fantasies of having a Louella Bartley bag in every color?
I just found a website that will allow you to have the bag of your dreams, every bag of your dreams for just pennies! Bag Borrow or Steal will fulfill all your fashionista cravings. For a small monthly fee, you can borrow a handbag from the virtual closet for a week, a month or even a year. BBOS has three levels of membership – trendsetter, diva or princess. Each level has tons of bags to choose from, so it’s hard to make a decision, but loads of fun to “window shop.”

For a trendsetter membership, you’d pay $19.95 a month and have access to bags from Nine West, Charles David, Dooney & Bourke, Lulu Guiness, BCBG Girls and other designers. The Princess membership costs $49.95, and you can borrow a Moschino, Lorelei, Tano, Christopher Kon, Coach, Kate Spade bag. There are other designers in that group too. So, you’re a Diva? Your membership is $99.95, and you can borrow bags from designers like Isabella Fiore, Cole Haan, Prada, Juicy Couture and more. They also have “deluxe” memberships for all three levels. The “deluxe” allows you to borrow two bags instead of one at a time. Did I mention they have gift certificates?
All the bags are originals, not duplicates, and are in pristine condition. If you fall madly in love with your borrowed bag, don’t despair, you can purchase it. Bags are in and out in less than a season. As an investment, it makes more sense to have a membership, rotate your bags whenever you want, than to give your landlord a really bad excuse for why the rent is late. Think of Bag Borrow or Steal as a money market fund, for a small investment, you get a season or three of interchangeable delights.
For this item, you’ll need a pair of scissors to cut out the picture and leave it where your sweetie can “accidentally” pick it up.

Aren’t these earrings divine? They’re the work of Cathy Waterman. These two styles, “Love” and “Daisy” can be found at Barneys. And you know they would look great on you.
They’d probably look great mixed with one the fashions that you’ll see when the Asia Society Present: BURN IT UP: Breakout Asian American Designers in Fashion this Friday, February 4th.

Full Frontal Fashion’s Christina Ha will be emceeing this event. There will live performances, behind the scene interviews, a fashion show and installations of photography, video and performance art. New York’s hottest Asian American designers will be participating in the event. The designers are; Maki Doherty-Ryoke for Susan Cianciolo Studio; Chrishabana, one of GenArt’s Fresh Faces of Fashion last season for accessories; Eugenia Kim, well known accessory, hat and shoes designer; Siri Kuptamethee of Indigo People; Mary Ping, this season’s Ecco Domani Foundation Winner; Tammy Tiranasar and Jean Yu.

Beauty Tips- I’m going to close out today’s column with some beauty tips I’ve picked up for you. Skyy Hadley of As U Wish Nail Spa recommends taking Vitamin E to help your nails grow and stay healthy. I’ve found that Oil of Olay Daily Facials Express wet cleansing cloths is terrific for taking even the most stubborn make up off your face. They’re pre-moistened and are in a re-sealable bag that you can toss in any case and take anywhere. I’m also enjoying their Daily Facials Intensive deep cleaning clay mask. Not that I like having a blue face, but it’s gentle on my sensitive skin and does a great job of whisking impurities away. For more information on those products go to http://www.oilofolay.com

It looks like we’re slowly inching our way into spring, after all Tuesday was a balmy 40 degrees! Today is Groundhog Day, and we’ll find out if the critter pokes his head out of his hole, and we’ll learn if spring will be here sooner than later.
Whether or not we’ll have an early spring, I do news for you that will definitely brighten up your day.
Ouidad Salon- The Curl Experts is offering a free deep conditioning treatment, valued at $90 and up depending upon your hair, for the entire month of February when you get your curls cut at the salon.

Yup! The deep conditioning treatment will make your hair healthy, happy and look fantastic. The cold temps outside combined with the weird dry heat in many buildings can damage your hair. The deep conditioning treatment will rescue you hair from damage and make it look like curly ribbons. Based on Ouidad’s philosophy that “like your body, your hair needs food too” Ouidad’s Deep Treatment is a concentrated, deep conditioning formula that contains 21 amino acids, sulfur, wheat and soy proteins. It reconnects the molecular layer of the hair, which is where the condition and color are found. This makes the color look richer and shinier, as light reflects off the newly perfected molecular layer. Did I mention it smells divine?
Ouidad is offering a 2oz. Deep Treatment as a free gift with purchase at http://www.ouidad.com
The Ouidad Salon and Education Center is located at 37 West 57th Street, 4th floor. To make an appointment, or for more information call, (212)-888-3288. The Pussycat Dolls is a troupe of sexy, sassy, performers who combine old fashioned burlesque with revved up song and dance. They’ve been called, “L.A.’s hottest cabaret ticket of the year” by People magazine. The troupe based in California, has toured internationally to rave reviews. The troupe is choreographed by Robin Antin, and led by Carmen Elektra. It boasts Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Gwen Stefani and Christina Applegate among their many star guest performers.
Stila creator Jeanine Lobel met some of the Dolls while working on the set of “Charlie’s Angels 2.” She realized that the Stila Girl and the Pussycat Doll had many of the same attributes. Both are positive, sassy, and have their own style. They’re feminine, flirty, and self-confident. In a tribute to the Dolls, Stila has created a cosmetic limited edition set, the Stila Pussycat Dolls Collection.

The collection is pink based, as befitting a Doll, but the colors work with every complexion. Since I had gotten the collection ahead of the pack, I road tested it on my poor friends. No matter their skin tone, I made try them on the kit and the results were fantastic. Everyone looked great.
The kit is comprised of three eye shadows (white, black, and purple) and one pink blush. The shadows are incredibly versatile. Looking for a subtle look? The use the white shadow (it’s very sheer) from lid to brow and line your eyes with a pencil. You can combine the purple and white for a great daytime look and for some night time punch, add the black shadow. Since all the shadows are sheer, you determine how intense you want the color by how much you apply.
The blush is a sheer pink, called cozy, that gives your face a nice glow. I’m a very fair olive and it worked great on my skin tone.
Oh the glazes! I love the twisty thing on top that gives you the exact amount you need for your lips. There are two; amaretto and peppermint. Both are sheer and taste exactly like their names. They’re great on their own or over a lipstick.
There are also two lipsticks; pussycat nude and pussycat pink. As I said before they work with every skin tone. They can be used not only for your winter color wardrobe, but will work well with spring and summer colors too.
This Friday, there’s a special Stila Pussycat Dolls event at the Sephora Fifth avenue store. Come and meet the Dolls, get a free Pussycat Dolls DVD, try on the new collection with the help of Stila’s pro make up artists and have fun. Due to the exclusivity of the event, you must make an appointment for a make up application. It’s one DVD per person, while supplies last. appointments are required. Wear red this Friday. Why? Because Friday is the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red for Women’s Day. Red is the symbol for women and heart disease. Go red for women; to take charge of their health, to bring awareness about heart diseases’ devastating toll on women’s health, to remind women to lead stronger, healthier lives. Many national monuments will be bathed in a red light and some daytime shows, like Passions and General Hospital’s cast will be wearing the American Heart Association Red Dress Pin.
If you’d like to wear the pin your self, call the American Heart Association at 1-888-MY-Heart or visit their website, http://www.americanheart.org
Surfing on the net I found this tee shirt and couldn’t stop laughing. It’s really the perfect shirt for those days when everything goes wrong.

Wear it with sleep shorts, wear it when you have to deal with the dry cleaners who yet again ruined your favorite shirt, or wear it when you have to deal with the cable guy. It also makes a great gag gift.
You can find the shirt at http://www.cafepress.com/isazoe.17310179

After promising forays into the perfume business by carmakers such as Ferrari, Jaguar and Corvette, Hummer has thrown its sizeable hat in the mix and hopes to emulate the success of these trailblazers. The latest offering by Riviera Concepts, the creator, marketer and distributor of Alfred Sung, Bob Mackie, Nanette Lepore and more, Hummer fragrance for men, with full blessings and endorsement from the General Motors Corporation and Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, hopes to leverage its solid base of diehard fans and is thus “targeted towards anyone who enjoys the pure thrill of off-roading and either owns or aspires to own a Hummer vehicle.”
Right from the get-go, the fragrance’s packaging leaves little to interpretation. Shaped like its namesake, Hummer reflects the well-known silhouette of the vehicle -solid, tough and boldly masculine. Even the top consists of a spray-through cap that clearly resembles an actual air-intake grille. Some of you might say that’s taking the car theme to a borderline-cheesy extreme, but at the very least its unique design does serve to distinguish Hummer from its shelf-top competition.
But the mark of an enduring fragrance is of course what’s inside the bottle, and that’s where Hummer manages to deliver. Bold but not overpowering, the scent harmoniously fuses thyme, peppercorn, green foliage and tonka beans with a spicy rush of leather, sandalwood and patchouli. Covering both ends of the usage spectrum, the scent is subtle enough for everyday wear yet equally well suited for a romantic candle-lit dinner or an exciting night on the town. Neither too fruity nor too musky, it stakes out a promising middle ground, thereby extending its potential audience and reach. For men looking to round out their lineup of fragrances or find a new one-stop shop, Hummer is definitely worthy of a test drive.
Wherever there is sunshine there are shadows, and detractors will naturally have their fair share to complain about. The packaging and branding of Hummer might alienate some consumers looking for something a little more sophisticated or less hokey, and at a suggested retail value of $52 for 4.2 fl. oz., the liquid in this tank is comparably priced with the stuff that goes into the eponymous vehicle itself. Fortunately for Hummer, the fragrance smells infinitely better than the latter.

Packaging and pricing aside, the scent itself is rugged and adventurous, and judging from positive early buzz, a loyal following will likely develop. For them awaits a full line of products encompassing a body wash, deodorant stick and aftershave splash. All are available at fine retail chains including Sephora, Macy’s and Dillard’s, and online at www.Sephora.com.
The scent of love: Aromatherapy for Moms and Kids

Hello sweet mamas! It’s February and it’s our month for fragrances. Last year at this time, I gave you the “all about town” for New York’s best lines of colognes and perfumes for the entire family (see archives, Feb 2004). So this year, I want to talk about aromatherapy! There is nothing quicker that evokes comfort and memories for me like wonderful smells. A warm apple pie cooking, the potpourri tucked in my childhood drawers in satin sachets, mmhh. Now I am a mama and every night after the bath, the boys and I are doused with the Dr. Hauschka lavender bath oil (www.drhauschka.com) Why? Because it is another loving cue that the day is over and it is time to let the body relax and rest.
Something in the Air
First, a word of caution. Essential oils should not, I repeat, not be applied directly to a baby’s skin under 18 months old. This is the rule of thumb. A small drop could be applied to a blanket or a teddy bear, but not to the skin. There are many companies, such as Dr. Hauschka, who make diluted oils that are sensitive enough for baby care. But if we are talking about essential oils versus diluted, an essential oil could be put into a burner that would fill the room with aromatherapy for your little ones. I had a great conversation with Malia from Aromatix @ 1169 2nd Avenue, New York, 10021, ph, 212-838-9196 (www.aromatixnyc.com). They have a wonderful electrical burner for sale, Essential Air, with a timer that runs every 25 minutes for 5 minutes. This product will fill your home with an array of products, including their line of Neal’s Yard blended oils. When the two-year old is screaming for more Playdoh while the baby is crying from teething, burn their Relaxation blended oil. When the screaming subsides and the little angels finally put their heads upon their pillows, you and papa can get out the Passion blended oil – ooh la la! For postnatal mamas wanting to get rid of stretch marks, massaging Aromatix’s Neroli oil with a massage oil into your belly works magic on your tummy, mmmmhhh. Neroli oil is distilled from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree and also has wonderful effects with insomnia, anxiety and depression. Sounds like the perfect post-partum oil to me!

Lavender to the Rescue
Around mamas and babies, Dr. Hauschka’s Lavender bath oil is practically as essential as a pacifier. Babies grow calmer from lavender. Every night, Brody (he is almost 5 months, can you believe it?) takes his tub or sponge bath, and then while he’s snuggling into his pajama outfit, mama puts a few finger-tip drops of lavender on the outside of his clothes. Then I swaddle him into the blankie I knitted him, and we have one more swig on the old bottle. Then we dance around the room to a little Josh Groban or Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook and it’s off to sleepy land. I swear he loves the whole ritual just as much as I do. The lavender smell seems to make him just purr like a kitty. In fact, his nickname in our house is “Gatito”, which means little cat in Spanish (or “Gringo Gatito, which means white boy kitty).
The word on the street, W. 19th to be exact, is ARCADIA
You can find the Dr. Hauschka line at another wonderful store in New York City, Arcadia. Arcadia is located at 261 W.19th Street, ph: 212-243-5358. The owner of this store is Jay Gurewitsch, who is passionate about his store and his products. He spent a generous amount of his time explaining to me (to you, dear mamas) all about the authenticity of essential oils. Come to find out in our interview, the United States and the FDA do not regulate these products, which is why the price differences seem so random. You won’t find a label that will say, “certified organic oil” in the U.S. It seems the U.K. market is where these products get certified by their Soil Association. So find out where a store is buying their oils, and know the average pricing on authentic essential oils is $22-$23, not $5 or $50. The other important thing you should know is that a true essential oil will irritate the skin upon direct contact, which is why these oils are mixed with base or massage oils. But as Jay told me, you can add essential oils to the bath to dilute or even your cooking oils, such as olive or almond. To make sure Jay is bringing you the real McCoy, he gets his products from Natural Health Remedies in the U.K., where the oils are certified organic (www.nhr.kz) Bravo Jay, you are a wonderful resource that I want my mamas to meet.

Shh, Little Baby Don’t You Cry
The largest U.S. offerings of aromatherapy for babies that I could find for you dear mamas is online at www.earthbaby.com or www.erbaviva.com Take a peek! If you scroll down on the homepage of Earthbaby, there is a link to their Aromatherapy product lines. The aromatherapy line they carry is California Baby ™. Their four products can be added to a diffuser that the site sells, the bath, or massage oil for baby. The products are Calming and Bedtime, Overtired, or Cranky, Resistance Builder and Colds and Flus. The Colds and Flus and Resistance Builders are probably best dispensed from a diffuser, so while your little one sleeps, he can get the benefits of such essentials a eucalyptus, fir, and tea tree. Overtired and Cranky is of course filled with chamomile, the other magical oil for babies. I have used the oil in a diffuser for its calming effects and diluted tea in my baby bottles when their tummies act up. On the Erbaviva site, they have fantastic aromatherapy products and essential oils in creams and massage oils for calming and skincare. Erbaviva can also be purchased at a Sephora location right here in Manhattan.

A story from the attic
There are other less scientific methods of aromatherapy. I feel a story being pulled down from the attic. In being mamas we all draw from the memories of our childhoods and our own families of origin, and this story of yummy smells and aromatherapy has its origins in the hearth of my dear sister Pammy’s house. She married early, acquired three cats, and then had kids while I was still sowing my oats. Pammy decorated her house just like Mom had every holiday with wonderful crafts and sparkling messages of hope and celebration. But mostly what I remember were the smells of pumpkin pies and cinnamon rolls. These weren’t smells from her ovens – Pammy burned Yankee candles all year (www.yankeecandles.com) I would hurry in from trains and planes from the U.S. and abroad, and I would tease her about what an old “marm” she had become. But in my heart, I was so grateful that she had given me a place to call home till I made my own. Now that this old Bohemian gal has settled into being a mama of her own, I decorate my house each holiday and burn Yankee candles in-between my oils. In the air are the smells of a prayer of my own for my kids. That they will remember the smells of the heart, from Mama and Papa and maybe someday, each other. Thank you sis.
Love to you all,
Mama
