Shop Well, Live Well
By title="Email " alt="Email ">
In keeping with our theme this month of honouring companies and organizations that give back, we wanted to mention the folks at Shop Well With You, an organization dedicated to helping women who are dealing with cancer maintain or achieve a healthy body image through clothing and fashion. Through education, outreach and personalized services, SWY focuses on the woman, not the cancer, to provide support and promote survivorship. Their unique approach to wellness has caught the attention of such industry leaders from Eileen Fisher to Glamour and Lucky magazines.
Last year, SWY used its expertise to create the SWY Guide to Body Image and Cancer, an educational booklet that is the first of its kind to use clothing to address and assist with the abovementioned body-image concerns. As more and more women survive cancer and live longer, the need to move beyond being identified as a cancer survivor and instead be recognized by one’s other attributes has grown in importance.
With the support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, SWY has created this guide and provided women with helpful tips when seeking garments that are:
- Comfortable after surgery as well as years after treatment
- Accommodating for ports, drains, and prostheses
- Safe to wear with an ostomy
- Accommodating for lymphedema, or swelling in the arms due to lymph node removal
- Helpful when dealing with hair loss
- Flattering, functional, and fun
By making the Shop Well with You Guide to Body-Image and Cancer available to healthcare providers nationwide, SWY has provided a long-sought-after solution for women struggling with cancer-related body image issues. More importantly, this 16-page booklet is not only designed to accompany its user to the mall, but to her own closet, allowing her to find clothing in her own wardrobe that will improve her quality of life, during and after treatment.

Rock Your Chakras

ROCKRAS
Rocks for your Chakras
The history of gemstones dates back thousands of years. It’s a rich history full of colorful stories about power, passion and even healing. Some believe that certain gemstones hold mystical powers. Others have held the belief that some of these “rocks” have their own energy (each type of gemstone has its own unique structure, which vibrates at a particular rate creating its individual characteristics). The study of the attributes of gemstones has been passed down throughout time, and it was the belief in these attributes which led to the first pieces of jewelry, as the ancients found themselves desirous of new ways to carry their precious stones with them at all times. Quite impressive for mere “rocks”, huh?
Chakras are centers in the body through which our personal energy flows. The word Chakra is Sanskrit and signifies (one of seven) basic energy centers in the body. In addition, Chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, developmental stages of life, colors, bodily functions and much more.
It is believed that certain gemstones relate to the Chakras and aid in balancing the energy centers of the body. Rocks. Chakras. ROCKRAS. The natural progression? Perhaps…or perhaps a step back into history. As much as it is a progressive notion to some that stones can be utilized for healing, energy alignment, luck and other traits…it is a time-honored concept to many.

Mai Tai Bar Serves One Up For A Cure
By title="Email " alt="Email ">
In support of its goal to bring the best in live, local entertainment to its guests, The Mai Tai Bar selected a local charity which brings music to children facing cancer and other critical illnesses as recipient of half of all proceeds raised during its opening day. On July 9, doors opened to the public at The Mai Tai Bar’s first West Coast location at the Pike in Long Beach, Ca. On that day, a festive happy hour and booming evening entertainment lineup enabled The Mai Tai Bar to raise money for Music for a Cure. The Mai Tai Bar has presented a check to the organization in the amount of $6,625.00 to continue its outstanding work with children.
Support for Music for a Cure will continue as an online auction on www.ebay.com takes place from August 15 to September 1, 2005. Anyone interested in participating is asked to visit www.maitaibar.com where they can find out details on how to bid on a Fender Stratocaster guitar autographed by Sugar Ray or a chance to win a meal with Murphy and members of Sugar Ray at The Mai Tai Bar (prize does not include travel) with proceeds benefiting Music for a Cure.
“Music for a Cure offers such potential to bring so many kids a lot of happiness during a very difficult time,” said Scott Barnett, CEO of The Mai Tai Bar. “American Cancer Society statistics show that in 2005 alone, there were about 9,500 new cases of cancer diagnosed in children up to age 14. If The Mai Tai Bar can help Music for a Cure reach out to them, we’ll lend our support in any way possible.”
Music for a Cure was founded in April 2002 in memory of Huntington Beach’s Ryan Michael Bates, who lost his battle against cancer in December 2001. The organization’s goal is to bring the curative properties of music to the children who need it most. Whether a portable CD player with CDs, a signed photo or poster of a favorite musician, a visit with a recording hero or a musical instrument with lessons to get them started, it’s Music for a Cure’s mission to bring music in many forms to children, resulting in inspiration, hope and happiness

Shoes and jewelry are some of the things a girl cannot live without. In the new book “Four Inches,” women celebrities bare it all for charity’s sake with just 4-inch Jimmy Choo heels and a little bling provided by Cartier. Christina Aguilera, Rachel Hunter, Kimora Lee Simmons and Macy Gray are some of the fourteen famous names that are posing for the camera to benefit the Elton John’s Aids Foundation.
Do not confuse this project with the latest issue of Playboy, “Four Inches” is full of intimate and tasteful portraits shot by world-renown female photographers including Mary McCartney, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Ellen von Unwerth. If you are over the tried and true red carpet celebrity shots, “Four Inches” gives you another look into the glamorous and the beautiful. Inside the hardcover book you’ll find work ranging from a seductive Paris Hilton posing with her pooch to our personal favorite, partly because it is so unexpected, the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson in fishnets and between satin sheets.
The foreword has been written by Elton John himself. 10% of the proceeds go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation which helps females in Africa that suffer from AIDS. So whether you buy “Four Inches” for the photography, celebrity curiosity or purely for the cause, it is definitely worth a glance. You cannot put a better book on your coffee table. Domaine Carneros’ Tees Support American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” Initiative
Cardiovascular disease claims more women’s lives than the next seven causes of death combined, nearly 500,000 a year, almost twice as many as cancer. To generate awareness of the disease and support the search for a cure, Domaine Carneros is selling beautifully designed limited-edition tees for women (from the well-known designer tee label, Velvet) that will benefit The American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. The Tees are available online at

With plush fruit, richness, elegance and a long silky finish, Domaine Carneros’, highly acclaimed Pinot Noir was the inspiration for the tee’s design. The clever motif, Domaine Carneros’ ram logo in a circular arrangement lightly sprinkled with ruby and silver sparkles, draws from the ancient concept of energy chakras for an effect that both looks beautiful and radiates the idea that wine nourishes the spirit.
“In supporting the vitally important “Go Red for Women” campaign, we wanted to create something that is both beautiful and meaningful, expressing the connection between wine and well being.” says Eileen Crane, managing director and winemaker for Domaine Carneros. “Like a long walk on the beach, wine is smooth and relaxing and at the same time it’s vivid and energizing. The tee does a beautiful job of capturing that feeling.”
The Velvet Tee is offered in three gorgeous color combinations: saucy tomato red with a cooling blue design, azure blue with deeper blue design, and crisp white with a rich ruby red design. Each color is available in small, medium and large sizes.

Thanks to Kol Design’s destination-scented bath lines, you can now saunter through the bazaars of Morocco or wander the pastures in Bethlehem from the luxurious bath you are about to step into.
The company offers four fragranced, non-gender-specific bath lines: Curacao, Picnic, Bethlehem, and El Maroc. Sally and Andrew Brunger have always been extensive travelers. The husband and wife team have created a unique concept where each line is meant to invoke the particular destination that it is named after. “Our scents are based on the places we’ve been and the memory of those destinations that we want to keep close to us”, explains Sally. For instance, Bethlehem teases the bather with rosemary, fig, and myrrh and allows the person to luxuriate in the natural treasures and spices of the Ancient World.
Next, you have their innovative Mix-Your-Own facials and scrubs: Kolyan, an Indian clay for deep facial cleansing; Noordhoek, a Kaolin clay from South Africa for a lighter treatment; Coltibueno, made from a mix of herbs common to Tuscany; Arenal, a powerful foot scrub of volcanic clay named after the volcano in Costa Rica. The last one actually fizzes and churns like lava when water is added to it! For customization, simply add other ingredients of choice like oils, pureed cucumber or floral waters. Kol is the only cosmetic line to offer such an option.
As for the non-gender-specific nature, Andrew defines it as democracy in bath products. “Men long for bath products that they feel comfortable buying in a store and that look appropriate in their bathroom when friends come to visit. We offer terrific scents in simple and attractive packaging that both men and women appreciate.” So much so that the 2004 Academy Awards attendees walked away with Kol bath products in their official gift bags for the event!
Not just will you be traveling places with Kol, your well-spent money, as well, will be going a long way, literally, to better the condition of children and women in far-away Afghanistan – to help rebuild their lives after decades of warfare and bloodshed. Kol donates up to 5% of its pre-tax earnings to charities providing sports equipment and new schools for children and training and education programs for women.
Kol ($9 – $40) is available at Henri Bendel, New London Pharmacy and BoConcept in NYC, Fred Segal Studio in LA, and NK in Stockholm. For information on other locations, please visit http://www.koldesign.com.

My mom is a strong believer in using ginger in most of her cooking. She thinks it helps with digestion. It’s a sentiment that the Thai people share as well. However, for them, the use of the ginger root goes beyond just mere cooking. They also use a relative of ginger – a root named prai – in beauty remedies for stretch marks, sunburn and various other skin ailments.
The Prai family of skincare (www.praibeauty.com) is named after this key Thai ingredient. They’ve reaped all the invigorating and soothing qualities of this plant and created a wonderful line of elegant skin care products. Luxurious as well as socially conscious, some of their products sound good enough to eat.
Prai’s Radiant Skin Repair Caviar is a healing therapy aimed at repairing the daily damage of your delicate skin. Used overnight, it nourishes the skin while you sleep, while anti-oxidants repair age related damage.
Another scrumptious sounding product is the Radiant Day Caviar, which works together with the Skin Repair caviar. It restores the skin’s firmness, provides moisture and combats free radicals.
Founded in 1999 by Cathy Kangas, Prai Beauty is not only committed to exceptional quality and performance in their product, but they’re also dedicated to supporting a multitude of animal causes. Cathy personally contributes to animal welfare charities.
One of the organizations Prai Beauty actively supports is the Humane Society of the United States (www.hsus.org). This noble institution champions a multitude of concerns — from pets, animal protection to political issues. Along with a great wealth of knowledge, their website also has ways you can get involved. Get one of their adorable animal pins to show your support of their advocacy, both here at home and in the international arena.

Another great organization that Prai Beauty is a proud contributor is H.O.R.S.E. of CT (www.horseofct.org). H.O.R.S.E. – which stands for Humane Organization Representing Suffering Equines, is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of neglected horses. It receives no town, state or federal funding and all money is raised through charitable contributions. If you’ve ever wanted a pony of your own, this is your chance. Sponsorship of a horse gives you visiting rights, where you can groom or hand-walk a horse.

Help Save A Life – Not all of them have nine lives
By title="Email Sharon Gomes Thomas" alt="Email Sharon Gomes Thomas"> Sharon Gomes Thomas
My Irish Setter Darby loves sticking her head out the window when we go for car-rides. With ears flying, she looks like she has her own wings. When I look at her through my side view mirror, I see her happy drooling face and it breaks my heart to disappoint her when we hit the highway – that’s when I close the window. Being a worrisome mom, I get concerned that she may be hit by a stray pebble. I already got a nick in my windshield recently, I’d hate to think what damage that same pebble would have done if it hit her eye.

So when I came across Doggles, at Dogality (www.dogality.biz), I wanted one immediately. Unlike ordinary sunglasses for dogs, Doggles are shatterproof and protect dog’s eyes from foreign objects, wind, and UV light . You can change the lens color anytime – for fashion or function. Dogality’s philosophy is that dogs don’t have personality, they have “dogality”! It’s a great store for funky, fun dog wear. More importantly, they strongly support animal charities like the French Bulldog Rescue Network (www.frenchbulldogrescue.org)

Being charitable and supporting causes have become all the rage lately. You can’t walk the streets of New York without spying a brightly hued band on someone’s wrist. Add another worthwhile cause to your wrist with the Spay & Neuter/Adopt a Shelter Animal Charity Wrist Band. You can get one from Chez Puppy (www.chezpuppy.com) that boasts the yummiest gourmet pet treats, including wheat free treats for allergic dogs. By buying a wrist band from Chez Puppy, they give 100% to support the Tri County Humane Society in Florida. (www.tricountyhumane.org), or you can go to the Tri County Humane Society website directly to get one.
Chez Puppy, also supports Canine Companions for Independence (www.caninecompanions.org), a national nonprofit that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing assistance dogs.

Adopting an animal is a real lifelong commitment that requires love and patience. But the loyalty and happiness that gets returned by your pet is immeasurable. Unfortunately not everyone sees it that way, and organizations like Humane Societies and Rescue Groups play such an immense role in helping abandoned animals. Sentient Creatures (www.sentientcreatures.org) is the primary group dedicated to consistently rescuing Harlem’s abandoned, abused, and neglected “junkyard dogs.” In the 27 years since they first began their rescue efforts, Sentient Creatures has rescued and placed more than 3,500 of these abused and abandoned animals in loving homes.
So hopefully August will be an inspirational and charitable month for you as it is for us here.

I work for an unnamed cosmetics company. Said company produces products, much like most cosmetics companies, chock full of chemicals. Unnatural, manufactured chemicals. As a newly converted organic food advocate, the expression “you are what you eat” has begun to have new meaning for me. If you wouldn’t feed your body chemicals, why would you feed your skin chemicals???
As a person with sensitive acne prone skin, I’ve tried it all. Retin-A, anitbiotics, Cetaphil, Purpose, La Mer, Origins, Aveda, Clinique, Lancome, and the list goes on. I was doing a show in Boston a year ago playing a “lady of the evening.” The makeup was thick, the lights were hot, my skin looked like garbage. So I ran to get a facial. The esthetician used some products from an organic line of skincare made by a company called Jurlique. Now, I’ll never be one to promise you miracle skin if you use such and such a product. But I can tell you this. Jurlique, created in South Australia from a humble herb farm by German émigrés Dr. Jurgen Klein and Ulrike Klein is truly “The Purest Skin Care on Earth,” as their company motto proclaims.
What makes Jurlique so unique? Natural and herbal antioxidants, vitamins, hypo-allergenic/pH balanced products, NO chemicals, biodegradable product in recyclable packing, and a skin care line based on the arts of aromatherapy, herbalism, homeopathy, and alchemy.
The Jurlique vision promotes balance through purity and integrity of product and care for the individual and the environment. All of the products have anti-aging properties; you only need to find the products that work best for your skin type.
The Jurlique regime is not for everyone as it takes time, but the soothing smell of the products and healing properties, give me a mini-facial everyday.
I start with a an essential oil called the Aromatic Hydrating Concentrate. A few drops in a bowl of hot water, I soak a compress into the concentrate and press it into my skin. It opens the pores, hydrates and preps the skin for cleansing. In addition, the Pine Needles or the Lavender scents are a lovely does of aromatherapy in the morning. Next comes the Foaming Facial Cleanser and every other day, the fantastic Face Wash Cream-a gentle deep cleanser and exfoliant. In winter and after the beach I use the soothing and non-oily Calendula Cream. In the summer, it’s the Herbal Recovery Gel, a light and effective moisturizer known as “the facelift in a bottle.”
Other Jurlique treats are the Lip Care Balm with exfoliators and softeners, the miracle Eye Gel, and the Lavender Silk Dust. RUN, don’t walk to buy this product for summer. I dust this over my face before leaving for work in the morning or before applying makeup. It leaves my skin smooth and matte.
For travel and everyday toning, I use the Chamomile Floral Water to calm, tone, and freshen my skin. It’s the perfect plane companion to help you fight in-flight dehydration and to combat jet-lagged skin. And don’t forget to take the Body Care Lotion with you. It leaves your skin healthy, smooth and smelling faintly like a grove of lemon trees. It actually improved the appearance and texture of my skin. Jurlique also carries a sensitive skin line as well as products for the men and the babies in your life. No pun intended.
Facial Services: All facials include a face, neck, shoulder, arm, and hand massage, as well as an appropriate facemask.
I’m partial to the Soho Store on West Broadway. The location is great and the staff, including Jessica, the gracious store manager, is skilled, friendly, and knowledgeable. They spend time with you, explaining each product and suggesting the right combination of products for your skin type. You’ll be a Jurlique fanatic before you know it!
Jurlique’s Signature Facial: The Great Skin Facial: $95
Antioxidant/Anti-Aging Facial: $100
Deep Cleansing Facial: $105
Marine Herbal Facial (vitamins for the skin) $115
Ultimate Experience: $135 ( a 90 minute facial with foot massage that includes 2 additional masks for your specific skin needs)
Charities:
Jurlique has recently established the Charitable Klein Foundation, which supports the research of natural medicines/herbs for the treatment of serious disease. The company also contributes to Australian based charities and is a huge supporter of the Arts in Australia. There are future plans to extend their charitable work to the US. In the meantime, you can help the environment and purify your skin one Jurlique product at a time.
