Whole Foods Market is giving summer a fresh new taste of seasonal favorites with its new Tastemaker program. The program showcases the work of food artisans within the New York area. The tastemakers will be featured on store signage, and also contribute to Whole Food’s promotional pieces. Some of the Tastemakers include Dan Barber of Blue Hill (a James Beard nominee), Brooklyn Brewery, Star of the Sea, Severino Homemade Pasta, Café Spice and Satur Farms. Angela Rakis, the executive coordinator for purchasing in Whole Food’s Northeast region states that the program evolved because “Whole Foods is committed to supporting local vendors and producers within the communities where we do business.” She also remarks that “giving shoppers an opportunity to know the stories and faces behind the products they enjoy makes the experience of shopping, cooking and eating more personal and fun.” That fun will begin later this summer, as you visit Whole Foods Market to delight in these talented artisans wonderful creations. |
Confessions of a Health and Fitness Editor: Part 2

After a short blip off the City Pulse radar, I’m back to confess my progress thus far! As you all know, I started training with Mike Shaw of New York Personal Training 4 weeks ago with a goal of losing 10-15 lbs. in one month. Since then, I’ve been training with Mike for 30 minutes a day/5 times a week followed by a 30-minute intense cardio session on my own.
Since starting at NYPT, I’ve steadily been losing inches and pounds. This week, Mike decided to speed up my weight-loss by putting me on a detox diet to “cleanse my system, curb my cravings, and allow my body to begin processing foods in a new, more efficient, healthier way.” |
City Pulse Style Police: Wendy Nichol Trunk Show

Sucre is a small hub on Bleecker Street for flourishing independent designers who shine amidst the mass-produced in the neighborhood. Inside, Wendy Nichol stands as one of them with her spring and fall 2008 collections showcased and discounted for followers who have been waiting for the day.
I’m sure you’ve come across her pieces on many a fashionistas. Her cone earrings, and studded rings and cuffs are signature pieces – what seems like a simple post earring from afar is really a small gold rivet! This effect comes from Nichol’s love of mixing “precious with hard.” |

It’s Shincha season and there’s a waiting list!

Don’t know your Shincha from your Sencha? Not to worry, all will be tea-lightfully explained to you when you visit Ito-En, the tranquil and lovely tea and gift shop on Madison Ave at 69th Street.
The airy, modern, stylish Japanese store has shelves filled with the prettiest and most precious Japanese tea cups, teapots and accessories. Edgy, modern sculptural spoons sit happily next to traditional bamboo tea whisks and both look equally elegant and important in their task to complement the special, but simple, ritual of making green tea. Best Tip: Never pour boiling hot water onto tea, it makes it bitter. Ito-En sells exotic boxes to store tea in, as well as handmade porcelain vases, sake sets, chopstick rests and other cool finds. If you come here to buy a gift for someone, you’ll likely walk away with one for yourself as well. |
Big Apple BBQ

New Yorkers have the luxury of being able to order a rack of ribs to their apartment at 4 a.m. and the convenience of finding pulled pork at over 20 different establishments in the city; but whether it’s real BBQ or not is questionable. Do they know meat? The 8th Big Apple Block Party brings in some of the finest “que” from all over the U.S. so that New Yorkers can taste the best in the country.
Braced with my “Fast Pass,” which guarantees entrance to the quick-moving lines where the wait was only a fraction of the regular lines, I carefully mapped out my meals for the afternoon based on region, cut of meat and photo of the actual pit master. FYI: Having this around your neck is the VIP of BBQ. It’s a must-purchase and they sell out, so if you come to eat, then it’s worth every penny (or Benjamin). |

This month, BN editors share their most memorable wedding stories.
“A friend of mine and her husband wanted a beautiful, countryside setting for their wedding and found a location with a corn field nearby, rolling hills and flowers in bloom — it looked like a movie set. Everything was ideal, until a flock of birds circled over the wedding party dining al fresco in the sun and dropped their wedding blessings down on heads, food and dresses. – BK, Metro Mama & Metro Baby Editor |
