BeautyNewsNYC got the opportunity to speak with celebrity make-up artist, Bruce Grayson, who also happens to be head makeup artist for the Primetime Emmy Awards, about this year’s top red carpet looks. After hours of planning, brushing and re-touching by Grayson and his team, we, the viewers out in TV-land, were able to sit on our couches and watch the beautiful faces of our favorite celebrities stroll by. If you couldn’t find your notepad at the time to take notes, don’t worry. We got you covered.

The Big Look of the Night: “We’re going to go back to the basics,” said Grayson. “Its going to be very, very simple, simplistic makeup, allowing the brows and the lashes to do most of the work instead of doing a real smoky eye. You’re going to see primary colors, like bone, beiges and shimmer bronzes, but light applications that give an overall luminous effect. A lot of sheer lipstick colors and a soft lip line.”

Re-creation: “Keeping your brows groomed and shaped is key to shaping the eye. Making sure you get a good curl on the lashes, so the eyes are opened up. Use two and three coats of mascara instead of just putting that one coat of mascara on.”

Flirty, Fierce and Fabulous

The economy may be plummeting, but designers raised the bar during NY Fashion Week for Spring 2009. Political and social arenas are in a state of disarray, but fashion came through to put our minds (and bodies) at ease. No hidden agendas here – lots of bare chests and transparent fabrics marched down those runways. A variety of shapes and cuts replaced the somberness of everyday gloom, showing everything from boxy cuts to shapely gowns to playful ruffles.

And as the saying goes, the biggest surprise came in a little package: Christian Siriano, the Season 4 winner of Project Runway proved to be more than a reality TV show flash-in-the-pan. His subdued palette of grays and what he called “…tonal colors, inspired by the sky and clouds” allowed us to see both the romantic and “fierce” side of his pieces. A burst of neon (“the lightning effect”) allowed for the collection of ruffled dresses, sheer organza tops, and simple blouses with beautifully carved sleeves, to pop in that fabulous Christian way. His collection was cohesive, perfectly tailored and had a flair all its own. Siriano made his mark and gave us hope that the American dream is alive and well and can appear in the form of a pretty dress.

CP Curio: The Governors Island Art Fair

By title="Email Katie Calautti" alt="Email Katie Calautti"> Katie Calautti

This past Saturday – after rolling out of bed before noon (the horror!) and helming a pilgrimage-worthy subway ride – I found myself standing in front of the Battery Maritime Building in lower Manhattan. My mission: to attend the opening ceremony of the First Annual Governors Island Art Fair, featuring more than 40 of New York’s most promising artists.

My supreme excitement at attending the visual cornucopia of paintings, sculpture, sound installations and photography was eclipsed only by my aching curiosity about Governors Island. I found it impossible to believe that I’d never even heard of it – let alone visited – after living in New York City for almost four years (me? Information superhighway of 5-borough discovery and travel, left in the dark? Uncouth!)

Total Exposure

The secret’s out – a billboard advertising Calvin Klein Fragrances’ new Secret Obsession scent and featuring actress Eva Mendes naked has been exposed in Times Square (if you haven’t seen it yet, the traffic-stopping image is located at the intersection of 47th St. and Broadway – just look for the gawking admirers.) The ad’s unveiling sheds light on the brand’s reinvention of its Obsession fragrance, and was kept under wraps until time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Calvin Klein and New York Fashion Week, Coty Inc. says.

U.S. networks recently banned a Secret Obsession commercial starring Mendes, citing that it was too controversial, the company says. It’s no secret that the Obsession advertising campaigns have been known to push boundaries, beginning more than 20 years ago, when the fragrance defined Calvin Klein as a brand. The tactic must be working – we’re obsessed.

Deal or No Deal

By title="Email Ashley Goldsmith" alt="Email Ashley Goldsmith"> Ashley Goldsmith

No matter who you’re voting for this November we must take a step back and realize that we are all part of a major historical election. With the media’s portrayal of female candidates as a sort of unrealistic option, there are many groups forming and many blogs being created by males and females alike exposing the blatant sexism within politics.

Justsaynodeal.com was created by women in an effort to raise awareness of the sexism running rampant in our current election. Though Senator Clinton is not the current Democratic choice for the Presidential candidate there was a lot of controversy surrounding her campaign deriving primarily from her gender. Justsaynodeal.com hopes to educate Americans on the election and that there should be no discussion of gender in politics. Though Senator Clinton did not use her gender as a way to help her campaign, many used it against her.

Check out Justsaynodeal.com and educate yourself on this historical election and help our country move past issues of gender in politics.
