It’s Like Butta Baby

By title="Email Anne Jones" alt="Email Anne Jones"> Anne Jones

The three Southern belles who opened this business are brave. When a recent 30 Rock episode declared that Manhattan was “off cupcakes and back to doughnuts” and the city is now host to the kitschy, vegan, the oversized, shabby chic and nearly every off-shoot of Magnolia- it might be safe to say that the tiny cake trend has come to an end.

Oversaturated or not, the lines and buzzing phones do not lie. When it’s done well, whether it’s a doughnut or a slice, New Yorkers can’t deny the love for portable and inexpensive treats.

While Butter Lane is actually on 7th Street, I knew I’d found the spot when I saw two patrons standing outside the shop, moaning with delight, their mouths full of cupcakey goodness.

Manly Makeover

By title="Email Candice Sabatini" alt="Email Candice Sabatini"> Candice Sabatini

You’ve been putting up with the less than perfect Mr. Right for quite some time now. You know, his rough hands, that “Eeowww…..where did that come from?” stray hair, and those… those…….oh don’t even go there….feet! Eeek! But hey, it’s the holidays and the promise of a new year brings with it hopes for not only economic recovery for all, but a new awareness that it’s time for him to get his groom on!

Truman’s Gentleman’s Groomers, where they put the “man” back in manicure, and Eshu Skin Assist, the all natural grooming products that tame even the manly men of Australia, have teamed up to give some lucky guys a makeover from Mrs. Claus. The tattooed and oh so naughty Mrs. Claus will be doing it right in Truman’s window on Tuesday night, Dec 23rd, from 6:30 – 8:30PM. Check out Truman’s website for details on how to enter your guy as a candidate for some complimentary manscaping. And don’t forget to visit Truman’s windows on Tuesday night to enjoy the fun.

Finally, A Gym Membership You’ll Actually Use!

By title="Email Ashley Goldsmith" alt="Email Ashley Goldsmith"> Ashley Goldsmith

Now I know I’m not alone when I say that I’ve made a New Year’s resolution or two in the past to eat healthy and visit the gym regularly. As the story goes, the resolution lasts about a month or two, just long enough to meet an adorable bartender working out his quads (like I even know what part of my body that is!). We then go on a terribly awkward date and I can’t bear to step foot in the gym for fear of running into him. So really, it has nothing to do with a lack of motivation but rather just wanting to avoid an uncomfortable reunion. Right??

Gravity Fitness and Spa must have sensed the ugly road of elastic waistbands in my near future and decided to create an irresistible membership package, fully equipped with not only use of their multi-level, 15,000 sq. foot gym but also free burgers and haircuts.

Now I know you’re thinking what does one have to do with the other? Why would I want a burger when I’m trying to lose weight? Trust me though, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from diet books, videos, magazines, etc. it’s that you can’t deprive yourself of things you want otherwise you will rebel and eat pint upon pint of Ben & Jerry’s! So essentially, you sign up for the Gravity Fitness Economic Stimulus Plan for a mere $145 a month, and you’re entitled to full use of the gym, 4 burgers per month from burger joint and 1 haircut from New York Shaving Company (and if you’re a female, you can substitute the haircut with 2 glasses of wine from Knave).

Whoa MoMA

By title="Email Simone Carlene Porter" alt="Email Simone Carlene Porter"> Simone Carlene Porter

Marlene Dumas has been described as one of the most thought provoking artists of today. Her MOMA exhibition “Measuring Your Own Grave” features a collection of paintings and drawings that chronicle the life of human beings with a focus on race, sexuality and social identity. From the grotesque to the downright erotic and brutally realistic, Marlene pulls from the viewer a completely different idea with each piece. She shares with us her distinctly unique views on these controversial issues and intrigues us with her approach to bridging the gap between life and death.

There are rooms lined from ceiling to floor with the portraits of all kinds of people; each with a different story. We’re left wondering who these people were and what their stories consisted of. In addition to exploring controversy, Marlene Dumas takes us on an emotional journey. Love, pain, suicide, pregnancy and the loss of innocence are just a few of the pit stops. Pieces like ”The Painter” carry with them a kind of double meaning. The red coloring on the child’s hands is supposed to be paint, but you won’t be able to shake the feeling that it could be something more. Take another look.

Jersey’s Great Getaway

By title="Email Samantha Siegel" alt="Email Samantha Siegel"> Samantha Siegel

Have all the holiday feasts and parties, with one too many glasses of eggnog, left you looking worse for wear? Spa Chakra in Short Hills, NJ, a short 21 miles from your beloved island, holds the key to your post holiday rejuvenation. Located in the Short Hills Hilton, Spa Chakra has been entirely revamped, and has partnered exclusively with June Jacobs to provide its customers with paraben and preservative free treatments. With over 15,000 square feet filled with beauty enhancing power the spa also boasts a 50-foot pool, full-service salon and fully loaded health club. Pick off of their a la carte menu, or test drive one of their “perfect pairing” selections, which are specifically designed to provide the utmost relaxation in an optimal time frame.

When I arrived for my signature facial I was greeted warmly by the staff, who make it their top priority to build strong relationships with their clients. As a first timer to the spa I was treated to a complimentary foot soak and rub, during which I chatted with Sun my esthetician. By building a bond with her I was completely comfortable and ready for the pampering that laid ahead. Tailoring each treatment to the client, Sun only used products that would reduce the color in my red-toned skin; the cucumber and green tea products seemed to work best on me.

One Word: Oprah

By title="Email Ashley Goldsmith" alt="Email Ashley Goldsmith"> Ashley Goldsmith

Despite the fact that we’ve got a while sleuth of politicians in office, it goes without saying that Oprah is pretty much the Queen of the Universe. Whatever she says, does, thinks, etc. is what goes. So when Oprah dedicated an entire episode of her show to all things beautiful and revealed that Olay products, specifically the Olay Foaming Face Wash and Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum were inexpensive high quality products, we couldn’t help but be tempted with a giveaway of sorts.

So without further ado, BeautyNews will be giving away three gift baskets filled with Olay’s best sellers, mainly from the Regenerist and Cleansing lines. This includes:

Anti-Department Store Shopping

By title="Email Ashley Goldsmith" alt="Email Ashley Goldsmith"> Ashley Goldsmith

What could be considered my least favorite thing about Manhattan are the touristy areas, essentially 34th street all the way up to 60th are to be avoided at all costs. Anytime I know that I’m within fifty feet of the popular department stores in that 30 block radius I run for the hills. This time of year midtown is like an LA highway, bumper to bumper (foot) traffic that can get you frustrated even if you’re not in a rush.

So what’s a girl to do when she’s got Christmas shopping to take care of with only a spare minute on a Sunday afternoon? Head to the Holiday Market at Union Square of course! Or brave the tail end of the midtown crowds at the Holiday Market at Columbus Circle (but shhh…don’t dare speak of it when you’re in tourist town, leave them to their department store heaven.) Filled with more than 100 gift boutiques you’re sure to find something for everyone. Band t-shirts for your brother, monogrammed leather goods for dad, handmade jewelry for mom, really I could go on and on but check it out for yourself. I promise you’ll be the cool cousin/niece/granddaughter giving gifts that aren’t the standard cashmere accessories or flannel pajamas.
