Two of New York’s beauty staples have decided to celebrate their New York roots and create collections in the New Year dedicated to the city that never sleeps. Whether you’re an East Village girl, a Broadway babe or a New York Nude (see below), you won’t have trouble finding the perfect shade to rep you’re hood’.
First up, one of the BN staffs favorites, Dashing Diva. The salon opened its first outpost in the East Village 5 years ago and now has six locations in Manhattan, 3 in Brooklyn and one set to open this year on Long Island. |
CP Palate: Yummm…Pancakes!

Last weekend I had brunch with a girlfriend and ate some of the best buttermilk pancakes I’ve ever had. Which got me thinking about pancakes and how I really don’t eat them as often as I should. Those nice, light, fluffy flapjacks can really just make your day.
Well someone at Clinton Street Baking Company must have read my mind because the entire month of February is Pancake Month at the Lower East Side eatery, voted “Best Pancakes” by New York Magazine. Every few days a new flavor debuts, starting on February 2nd with candied blood orange and bittersweet chocolate. The month continues to offer days filled with crunchy banana with a cinnamon-chili-chocolate sauce and ends with fresh coconut pancakes with roasted pineapple and macadamia nuts. |

1. With the state of the economy, it’s easy to get carried away in stores like Forever 21 or H&M perusing the racks while sidestepping over sequined mini dresses slumped on the floor. Well, STOP. Put down the jersey mini and back away from the cash register. Remember three simple words: quality not quantity. Instead of buying several inexpensive items, save up and find something that may be a little pricier but is a timeless, quality piece.
2. Stop being lazy and when you see an advertisement for a sample sale, go! What’s better than designer clothes, that you normally only dream about, 50-80% off? 3. Don’t be afraid of your own closet. Take a few minutes and survey what you already have. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve found a dress or sweater in the back of my closet and said to myself, ‘Why haven’t I been wearing this?’ It’s a great feeling when you pull something from the back of your closet and it feels new. |

When Luke McKinley decided to open a wine shop after studying and teaching wine for several years, he wanted a distinctive store in a unique area. After extensive research, he decided there was no greater area than Harlem.

Bringing Out the Big Guns

After four years of residency in New York City, it’s become blatantly obvious that a good hairstylist – unlike Starbucks – is not, in fact, located on every corner. After hundreds of wasted dollars and countless horrifying hairdos (an appalling incarnation of The Wedge, for one), I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d never be truly happy with my tumultuous tresses.
So when I heard about the Lower East Side opening of the first US-based Tommy Guns salon, I did a little reconnaissance. Owner Russell Manley runs three successful shops in London (the first of which opened in 1994) and boasts celebrity clientele like Kate Moss, Jude Law and Courtney Love. The emphasis on the experience at Tommy Guns is that of a traditional barbershop feel with upscale services – and the indulgence is open to both men and women. |
2009 Resolution Revolution: Week 2

As I finish up Week 2 of my resolution, I can’t say I’ve miraculously shed pounds and now look like Gisele Bà¼ndchen. (Unrealistic expectations, I know). However, I can say that keeping a food log has really increased my awareness of where I eat and what I eat. My food log has pointed out a few bad habits, like eating while standing up in front of the refrigerator, that needed to be corrected. Now, I comfortably eat meals seated at my kitchen table away from any distractions. |
CP Curio: An Exhibition of New Traditions

We all know that NYC is the cultural hub for all things aesthetically pleasing, culturally definitive and forward thinking. Japan Brand, an exhibit being held at the historical Felissimo from now until February 7th, showcases a fascinating tie between the past and the reinvention for our modern purposes. It is a true meshing of function and high design.
The show features various installations from wood and metalworking to lacquering, food and jewelry from different regions of Japan. Each work features earnestly crafted handmade pieces that shrug off modern expectations and focus on sincere tradition, making it a true testament to both the art world and Japanese traditions. Pieces vary from reinventing past successful Japanese textiles and other items of art into tangible forms like wool shawls, carefully blown glass paperweights (from Otaru, the town of glass) that exceed all expectations and cast iron teapots constructed to perfection. |

While perusing a high fashion magazine on the check out line and “ooo-ing” and “aah-ing” at the flawless faces with the perfect smoky eye I thought to myself, “I’m sure I can do that with some practice, how hard can it be?” Two hours later I look like I’m on my way to Ru Paul’s new reality show about cross-dressers. |
