NARS Cosmetics partners with Rodarte for their operatic costume debut in LA Philharmonic’s Don Giovanni. – Makeup artist James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics collaborated with Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the designers behind fashion brand Rodarte, to create a custom look for Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Don Giovanni, which opened May 2012. Rodarte created custom designs for the costumes of the production and Kaliardos brought their vision full circle, completing it with the beauty look inspired by the costumes and the opera. Don Giovanni is conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and world renowned architect Frank Gehry designed the set. The production is held at Walt Disney Concert Hall, a building of Gehry’s design.
When envisioning the makeup look, Kaliardos drew inspiration from the architecture of the space. With angular walls and intense structures, the set and the building itself were reflected in the beauty look. “The makeup is abstracted but rooted in classical theater,” said Kaliardos for NARS. “I created a facial architecture as a base, letting the characters drive each look.”
The colors and textures provided by NARS were perfect for the stage; the strong look for the main characters and choir started with a stony base, and finished with bold lip color. Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte were very excited to work with Kaliardos to make their vision real on the stage, saying that NARS’s vast array of products and colors coupled with Kaliardos’s talent were to thank for the look as a whole.
