Of all the beautifully packages cosmetics in the world (Anna Sui, Lipstick Queen and Jill Stuart come to mind), perhaps the fairest of all are the gorgeous gold and red bullet lipsticks and compacts in Gabriela Hernandez’s line, Bésame. They’re sure to spark the interest of any discerning makeup lover and we at BN are no exception.
Gabriela Hernandez, founder of Bésame
The Brazilian Hernandez was inspired by a background in art and design, a love for feminine detail and fond memories of her glamorous grandmother. The resulting collection, Bésame, launched in September of 2004. We recently sat down with Gabriela Hernandez for a quick Q&A, exclusively for BN readers.
BN: What is the meaning of Bésame? Why did you choose this name for the collection?
GH: Bésame means “kiss me” in Spanish. The name comes from a popular big band song named Bésame Mucho. The romantic tune inspired the Bésame line of products. READ MORE
BN: The packaging for Bésame would suggest a love of vintage. Do you wear vintage clothing and accessories?
GH: I am a big fan of vintage clothing since I am petite and the fit is just wonderful for my body shape. I own many vintage dresses and suits and I am impressed by the quality of the stitching and finish of these garments. As far as accessories, I love hats and own several vintage models that really put the finishing touch on some of my outfits.
Bésame’s Souffle Foundation & Enchanting Lipsticks
BN: For those new to the line, what Bésame product do you suggest they try first? Why?
GH: I suggest they try our award winning lipsticks. Our colors are the best in terms of staying power and strength of color. We also make the very best reds available. If they need a coverage foundation, I suggest our Souffle Foundation. It has a silky finish and offers full coverage that can be adjusted by application. It is a favorite of movie make-up artists to achieve that air-brushed look.
BN: Does Bésame have any new products on the horizon for spring?
GH: Yes, for spring, we are launching new colors of our mascara, brown, navy and plum, plus a Gentle Mascara and Liner Sealer that helps keep make-up from running and smudging and lengthens the wear of any product.
BN: Do you have any staple products from other brands that you’d recommend to BN readers?
GH: I like Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion Kit. It does an excellent job of clearing the skin of dead skin cells and leaves it soft and luminous.
