In addition to bright, Easter/Spring-ready colors, it’s all about bases, primers and perfectors. The extra step and additional product are worth the effort and the price and even when its steamy.
Last month, we profiled Jemma Kidd’s Target line, JK Jemma Kidd and we’re following up with her high-end line, Jemma Kidd Makeup School. These products literally provide an education, replete with tiny instruction pamphlets in the packages that advise you on how to use Kidd’s products with maximum effectiveness. They’re even called “Jemma’s Makeup Class!” Her Lip Perfector – it looks like a lip liner- is an anti-feathering, line-diminishing plumper. Think of it as concealer for your pucker, since it neutralizes your lips’ natural redness and any imperfections. But rather than dry out your kisser, it soothes and softens, thanks to Shea Butter, castor oil hydrate and beeswax. It also gives your gloss a base to adhere, lessening the need to re-apply when sipping a summery cocktail by the crashing waves.
Kidd’s Tailored Colour Powder Blush Duos serve two masters: day and night. The softer color is designed for the hours when the sun is out, creating a natural flush or shaping and sculpting cheekbokes. The brighter color adds drama so can you morph from office worker to glamazon in one fell stroke of a fluffy brush. Kidd suggests a tiny sweep at the temples, but to never, ever apply near the hairline or above the cheekbone. Unless, of course, you have a day job where your name is Bozo. The Clear Pink/Deep Rose combo looks and feels au naturel.
The Eye Wardrobe Green Quartet is gorgeously oceanic, mixing four crisp shades with which to highlight, accent, blend and define. The palette allows for instant customization and the hues are summer-appropriate.

Don’t have time to re-do your makeup in between work and play? All you need to do is grab a bottle of Josie Maran Argan Primer Mist. A spritz will refresh your tired, dull, worn-out skin in an instant. Argan Oil is rich in anti-oxidants, so you can blast your face with it before you apply make up, as well.

Cle de Peau Beaute’s Spring and Summer Collection, Faces of Glamour, is inspired by the visages of seductive and iconic women the world over, such as Elizabeth I, Cleopatra and Old Hollywood sirens, paying particular attention to powerful makeup and sensually alluring lips. The Extra Rich Lipsticks are diamond cut and carry a $60 price tag, but if you want to make a statement a la Best Actress Sandra Bullock at this year’s Academy Awards, then paint your pout with the bold Red Abundance. Va-va-va-voom. Seriously Gwen Stefani isn’t the only woman who can pull off statement lips.
Cle de Peau’s Satin Eye Color offers hefty color payoff with a luxurious, silky finish. Chocolate Gold pairs well with Pink Opal for a modern, warm-weather rendition of perennial fave smoky lids.
Primers and bases are necessary for your makeup to stay put in humid, sticky, warm weather, so the Luminizing Enhancer Base rids you of annoyances like dark circles, dullness and lines. With Cherry Leaf Extract, it gives you a clean slate for whatever look you rock for the day. Or night.
Available at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys or Bergdorf Goodman locations.
Pop Beauty’s Smoky Eye Magnet Primer adds depth and intensity to your smoky eye look. It’ll hold your shadow in place and up your look’s smoldering ante. Apply with your finger, let it set, then top with your smoky hues of choice. It’s magnetizing without being clingy.

L’Oreal Paris’ Studio Secrets Professional Line is a mass market brand positioning itself right up there with the big boys – er, girls- so to speak. The Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base is like crème silk in a jar, gliding on your face to erase imperfections and minimize pores. Use it solo or underneath your foundation or concealer as a base. I used it on a Sunday as the sole product on my face and it was a flawless canvas and felt newborn-soft to the touch.
Available at mass market locations, such as Target or CVS.
Nothing is worse for problem skin that preservative-laden makeup designed to cover up the problem by only exacerbates the problems you work so hard to correct. Luckily for those with Rosacea, acne, sun damage, birthmarks or just plain old uneven tone, Cover Fx cosmeceuticals foundations are like a flawless face in a bottle. The line features a global palette spanning a whopping 30 shades and provides protection from wind, heat and other free radicals, as well as preventing moisture loss.
