Clementina Richardson is legit an artiste. She is an eyelash extension expert. Richardson can change your look and your life when you give your lashes over to her and her skilled hands. The founder of Envious Lashes in NYC has done my eyelash extensions multiple times and I am always thrilled with the end result. When I am in-between lash extension appointments and scroll through Insta pics of myself with lashes, I am always wistful for the length and lushness a Clemmy session provides.

When I first walked into her studio last spring, with black cat-eye liner, I didn’t need to say a word. Richardson looked at me and said, “You need drama to go with that eyeliner.” She was 100 percent right and knew exactly what I was looking for and would suit my personal style. At that moment, I knew I was in perfect hands.

Here, Richardson offers the nitty pretty on her ever-popular service. Consider this everything you needed to know about lash extensions, but were afraid to ask.

Beauty News: What is the one misconception about eyelash extensions you would like to clear up?
Clementina Richardson: Most people don’t realize that applying lash extensions is an art. It’s not one size fits all. Also, many people are under the impression that you need to take a break from lash extensions for your natural lashes to breathe; this is not true.

BN: Having had my lash extensions done by you and your team many times, I can attest that you are all artisans. How do you approach doing lashes with your clients? How do you come up with the right look and style?
CR: At Envious Lashes, each service begins with an in-depth consultation. Myself or one of my other lash experts assess the client’s eye shape, depth, and length, as well as the texture and condition of the natural lashes. We also look at their coloring and ask about their lifestyle and the look they want to achieve.

Once a desired look is agreed upon, the stylists suggest the set or sets that will create the look our clients are trying to achieve. We offer different options that will also fit the client’s budget. The process takes anywhere between one hour to two hours, depending on the stylist and set being applied. Once the set is complete, we discuss all after-care procedures, including the frequency of touch ups, which can be every 2 to 3 weeks.

BN: One tip that all women considering lash extensions need to know?
CR: It’s important for a client to understand that lash extensions are an enhancement of your own natural lashes. For clients who already have damaged lashes, or those that have naturally weak, short lashes, it’s not always possible to get a more dramatic look that a client with super strong, thick lashes can easily achieve. We customize each set for each individual client and can use anywhere from 3 to 5 different lengths and up to two different curvatures. I consider 80 lashes a full set; anything less does not create enough natural volume. With our Classic Lash application, 80-150 lashes are applied.

BN: Do lash extensions damage existing eyelashes? That’s a common thing I’ve read and seen.
CR: This is NOT true and if lash extensions applied correctly and properly by a licensed and certified professional, they are safe and will not ruin the health of your natural lashes. Be sure not to rub your eyes or tug or pull on the extensions, because this can cause premature lash loss and even damage to your natural lashes. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out. Since each lash extension is attached to a single eyelash, they will naturally fall out with your natural growth cycle of lashes.

BN: What can women do to play up their lashes if they aren’t getting lash extensions?
CR: For those who aren’t getting extensions or are taking a break, our Envious Lashes Luxuriating Lash Conditioning Serum is great to use to help you get stronger, thicker natural lashes. A good multi-vitamin will also work to help keep your lashes as healthy as possible. Also, NEVER pick at your lashes; this will only cause damage.

BN: How does one properly care for lash extensions so they last?
CR: Avoid getting your lashes wet for the first 48 hours. Make sure to properly clean your lashes daily with a gentle, oil-free makeup remover and use a conditioning serum like our Luxuriating Lash Conditioning Serum to keep them hydrated. Avoid sleeping on your stomach and try to use a silk pillowcase.

BN: How long do lash extensions last?
CR: When applied and cared for correctly, lash extensions could last 4 to 6 weeks. To maintain them indefinitely, refills are required every 2 to 3 weeks.

BN: What is your favorite high end beauty product and why?
CR: Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm is one of my favorite beauty products, and a little goes a long way. It firms my skin and helps keep fine lines and puffy eyes at bay.

BN: Favorite drugstore dream product?
CR: I love the Shea Moisture’s 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave In Treatment. This restorative treatment is multifunctional acting as a barrier against heat, re-hydrates hair, and reduces frizz. It is extremely lightweight and smells delightful! I also love this line because 10% of sales goes to Sofi Ticker Foundation to empower women and their families throughout Africa.
