Beauty

Jemma Kidd is a venerable titan in the cosmetics and beauty industries and she is also of regal heritage. This lovely English rose has launched three eponymous makeup lines: high end, professional and mass market in the form of Jemma Kidd Make Up School, Jemma Kidd PRO and JK, the latter of which instantly upgrades the Target aisles to posh levels! With her signature pink and black packaging, Kidd’s brands are stunning, sexy and boast incredible ease of use.

Kidd was incredibly detailed and informative when she plunked down for this month’s In the Hot Seat Q&A, so much so that we gave her a second feature this month with our “Winter Tips, Trends and Techniques” column! Read and learn, ladies, and have double the fun courtesy of Jemma Kidd!

I love Kidd’s Make Up School line, especially her Gloss Sticks. Bridgetown, picture above is a soft, neutral pink that works solo or glazed with gloss. You’ll achieve a PPP: Perfect Pink Pout!

Kidd’s statement that “Makeup is a powerful tool that can be used to enhance a woman’s best features, giving her confidence in the way she looks, letting her inner beauty shine” is a mantra we should all live by.

Note: We used Kidd’s British spellings, so don’t be thrown off by the use of “colour” and “volumising.”

BN: What is your favorite product you’ve ever created and why? Can you give one from each of your lines?

JK: Jemma Kidd Make Up School Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Crème. This is a real make-up artist favourite; it’s so versatile and instantly lifts and brightens the complexion.

Jemma Kidd PRO Skin Rescue Bio-Complex Veil SPF15. It’s an all-in-one product that preps, primes, protects, covers and illuminates the skin. It contains vitamins A, C and E to nourish and increase skin’s elasticity, and SPF15 to provide extra protection.

JK Ultra Plush Volumising Mascara. It’s the most vital item in my make-up bag. As I have fair lashes, I use it religiously to frame my lashes and give definition to my eyes. It gives real volume to my lashes.

BN: What is the one product you wish you had created and that you use daily?
JK: A great concealer is an everyday essential for disguising dark under eye circles and covering any blemishes. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is one of my favourites; the texture is unbeatable and the
two mixable shades make colour-matching easy.

BN: What are the biggest differences between your lines?
JK: Jemma Kidd Make Up School is an edited collection of core make-up essentials. I wanted to create a range that was non-intimidating, featuring wearable colours and multi-purpose, handbag-friendly products. Millions of women throughout the world wear make-up, but very few have been taught how to apply it, so I wanted to take the mystery out of make-up by creating step-by-step instructions to accompany each product.

Jemma Kidd PRO was inspired by my amazing Jemma Kidd Professional Team and was designed by artists, for artists. The focus here was to create a range of backstage essentials; the products combine colour with the very latest in skincare science, innovation, actives and complexes. In a nutshell, it’s ‘smart’ make-up.

With diffusion line JK Jemma Kidd for Target, I wanted to create a modern make-up line that expresses my love of fashion. The idea was to create a collection that fuses high fashion, statement colour with professional performance products, bringing the ‘catwalk to the curb’ without breaking the bank. This collection makes on-trend beauty accessible to all women.

BN: What is the one product EVERY woman should have in her makeup bag?
JK: Mascara. It frames the lashes and gives definition to the eyes. My favorite is my JK Ultra Plush Volumising Mascara. It gives real volume to the lashes and is smudge-resistant, so perfect for daily wear…especially in the winter.

BN: What are some current make up and color trends in London?
JK: Berry coloured lips were seen on lots of the autumn/winter catwalks. My Jemma Kidd Make Up School Rosy Glow Lip & Cheek Tint is perfect for those who want just a wash of colour on their lips rather than a full-on burgundy pout. For eyes, the colour palette was all about neutral and tonal colours – delicate washes of mink, taupe, beige and sand. The great thing about these shades is that they are all so wearable and flatter most skin tones.

BN: Can you tell us how to achieve the quintessential, “pretty as an English rose” look?
JK: Turn yourself into a classic ‘English rose’ with soft floral colours and silky textures. Create flawless, natural skin by using a tinted moisturizer rather than a heavier foundation and illuminate your cheekbones and brow bones with subtle touches of highlighter. Peach crème blush is flattering on most complexions and really fits in with this look. Choose eye shadows in peaches, pinks and taupes for a delicate wash of colour and finish with my Rosy Glow Lip & Cheek Tint for a ‘bee-stung’ stain of colour on lips.

BN: What is your favorite thing about doing make-up?
JK: Whenever I was at home, I’d give make-up lessons to daughters of family friends, and that gave me a far greater sense of achievement than making up models for fashion shoots.

BN: Any makeup trends you wish could be retired?
JK: I think the most important thing with all make-up trends is to interpret them in a way that suits you – adapt the colours, shapes and textures that you see on the catwalk to flatter your skin tone, face shape and eye colour. Don’t just follow the trends religiously.

BN: What is on your docket for 2011?
JK: Jemma Kidd Make Up School and JK product launches. More information to come in the new year.

Our own Nicole Cornella was happy to weigh in on her experiences with Jemma Kidd’s products, to give you a beauty junkie’s perspective on the line! We like to present runway and realway perspectives and here’s Nicole, with the real girl’s view! Nicole said, “Being a fan of Jemma Kidd for a few years now, I was pretty excited to try out the latest additions to her product lines. Receiving the bag o’ goodies in a statement black and electric pink small tote bag, I knew the products were going to impress.”

Nicole goes on, “First, I pulled out the Lip Perfector and the High-Shine Gloss Stick. I have always suffered from dry, chapped lips that often times, I tend to stray away from lipsticks. With new lip color trends, such as candy pinks and apple reds hitting the runways lately, I have not been able to pull off that trend with my cracked lips, especially with that rough city wind. The Lip Perfector is my new “can’t-leave-home-without-it-being-in-my-bag” cosmetic essential.”

Furthermore, she said, “The Lip Perfector has is a double-ended stick of lip magic. The first end is an anti-red, neutralizing cover to prime lips for application, even skin tone on and around the lip area and add moisture. Done, done and done. Now, the other end is used to fill in fine lines around the lips with smudge-proof, anti-feathering and plumping liner, with a little bit of Vitamin E. So, this little ‘wonder stick’ – which I am now calling it – conceals, preps, plumps, evens and softens.” See! Jemma wasn’t kidding about how terrific her products are. Sure, she’s biased, but Nicole’s love of the product only serves to prove the point.

“Now, I figured, why not kill two birds with one stone and test this High Shine Hydrating Gloss Stick with the Lip Perfector as my prep?,” Nicole said. “My first thought was that it was the perfect hue of bright pink I have been dying to rock. The High-Shine Hydrating Gloss Stick lives up to its name. Not only does the shape of the stick –a chisel shape if you will– help guide to a perfect application, the super sheer splash of color along with the hydrating gloss formula will leave your lips full of color and moist. And, with that Lip Perfector doing its thing underneath, my lips actually were holding this color, feeling smooth and looking good.”

Need date night makeup? “For a night out on the town, the Catwalk I-Kit for JK Jemma Kidd, has all the essentials for the eyes both for home and even on-the-go. The kit contains an eye prep and primer to neutralize and prep for application, two highlight shadows for above the lids, five shadows in both matte and pearl finishes, and one wet/dry liner and shadow. Of course, essential brushes are included as well. And the colors will really compliment any outfit,” Nicole raved.
