With spring here, and summer just around the corner, everyone is looking for the perfect shade of bronze. Self -tanners, bronzing gels, powder bronzers, and golden glowing skin are all the rage. But, what if you want to stay peachy? Stick to pink? Feeling rosy? Unheard of. Well, dig that umbrella into the sand, slather on the SPF 45, and learn how to glow all year round!
First things first: Complexion Perfection Cream, liquid, cream to powder, powder? What is the best foundation formula to beat the heat and still look polished? Try a tinted moisturizer. They come in all shades, for all skin types, and many contain an SPF of 15 or higher. Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, and Stila, all make sheer, blendable formulas that leave skin protected and glowing. Forgo the heavy liquid for now, a tinted moisturizer with a sheer powder to blot the shiny spots, and a dab of concealer to cover any “issues” are all you will need for a flawless, fresh face.
Color: The Anti-Bronze Several companies make shades of blush, and multipurpose products that enhance and brighten skins’texture. Tony & Tina Face Dew in Natural is a soft neutral highlighter in a compact. It is a subtle way to add a soft sheen to the skin without being greasy, and disappears on the top of the cheekbones to add a lovely reflective glow to the face. Also, their Apricot Shimmer Powder is a teasingly, copper hue for eyelids, cheeks, and decolletage.
Another multipurpose product is The Multiple by Nars, a creamy stick of color, ranging in shades from pearl to berry. Use the pink champagne Multiple in Maldives to really brighten up the face. Apply to cheeks, forehead, top of the nose and chin to create a sexy “afterglow” effect. M.A.C. Shimmer Blush in Peachy Keen, and Cream Color Base in Sundrenched, also add a fantastic flush to fair to medium skin tones. For deeper skin tones, try Stila Convertible Color in Poppy, a creamy, soft red cheek and lip color, that adds a rosy, sun kissed look to olive and dark brown skin.
Smashbox Cosmetics makes a beautiful, all over highlighting product called Softlights, in Smashing Tint. It is a generously sized, lightweight powder that adds the perfect peachy glow to any skin tone, and can be used on the face as well as the body. The key to looking dewy and fresh, even for oily skin, is the texture as well as tone of these products; so if you are weary of an ultra shiny t-zone, stick to the powder formulas. The combination of pink, gold, peach and rose add multi dimensional color, texture, and allow all skin types to reflect light and glow, glow, glow.
Brighten up: Eyes Wide Open… With all the soft focus color on the face, color on the eyes should remain clean, bright, and enhancing. Smashbox Cosmetics Eye Illusion is a multi tonal eye brightener, and a fabulous alternative to that second cup of coffee! The eye shadow quad contains four shades of glowing, creamy, powder shadow. Use on a bare lid, or blend with your own favorite shadows to lighten up any shade. Nars Eye Shadow Duo in New Delight, is a delicious set of lilac and peach shimmer shadows. The highly pigmented powder really sets the tone for a glowing, yet neutral summer face. Always finish off the eyes with a coat or two of your favorite mascara. A waterproof formula like Christian Dior Waterproof Curling Mascara, or Yves Saint Laurent Waterproof Mascara in Black or Plum, are very beach worthy, and will keep you protected from those summer rainstorms.
Lips- Keep them Kissable Sticking to gentle, neutral hues in lighter shades on the lips, really enhances the “anti- bronze” look as well. Keep them hydrated, and protected. Stick to sheer glosses, stains, or tinted lip balms. The Laura Mercier Fairy Tale Collection features glitter flecked delicate Lip Glaces, and sheer rose and coral toned lip colors with names like Sweet Dreams, and Pink Potion. Oh, if I only had a Prince to kiss……. Chantecaille launched a summer trio called Sunset in Brazil, which contains a lip gloss named Caipirinha, a golden lip treat with SPF 15. The key is to keep the lips soft, moisturized, and gently enhanced with color. Save the matte red lips for Santa Clause.
You Glow, Girl In conclusion, as you may have now gathered, gorgeous, glowing skin does not have to be tan or bronze. Think of lightening, and brightening your natural skin tone as an alternative. That way, you have colors that you can use all year round, instead of just “seasonal colors”. Make the most of the peaches and cream skin you were born with. Embrace the beige! And remember, make up is always meant to enhance what you already have, so….. lighten up!
