Back in October 2004, I wrote an article about my travel experiences Down Under (Australia – A Continent, a Country, an Experience that’s Unforgettable). In it, I mention that one of my best finds during a shopping excursion was stumbling upon the creations of the country’s resident makeup master, Napoleon Perdis. I was at a loss for mascara at time (and I mean that literally because I think it dropped out of my makeup bag mid-flight!), so I purchased his Long Black Mascara and was pleasantly surprised with its ease of application and wonderful wearability. The Long Black Mascara features a bent wand applicator, which makes it easier to bring a bit of curl upward toward the end of your lashes. I also remember liking the fact that the box the mascara was packaged in came with three-step directions for use. Quite clever.

Then, while I was exploring the Australian countryside on a fabulous wine tour, I picked up a newspaper for the bus ride, which provided a quick blurb of brilliant information: Napoleon was headed stateside in the spring and was landing (but where else?) in my hometown of NYC. Now that spring has arrived, so has Napoleon. This news made me more than eager to volunteer for the assignment of trying out additional products from the wonder Down Under.

I was sent the Light Diffusing Makeup in New Generation Look 3. The hypoallergenic formula smoothes fine lines and wrinkles and has a velvety texture that produced a silky finish on my usually over-sensitive skin. This foundation is enriched with antioxidant vitamins and a PABA-free sunscreen (SPF 8). The Camera Finish Powder Foundation Look B2 is a great pressed powder foundation, which I used for general application and individual touch-ups. Its appearance offers the right amount of coverage without appearing cakey.

From the Napoleon Divine collection, I also received the Goddess absolute lip color in Filia. This shade is a mauve-like hue that is bold but still manages to moisturize your lips while you wear it. There were also two samples of Satin Lips in Angelene (a light pink) and Soula-Marie (a brighter hot pink). They are super satiny glosses that definitely make the grade.

Last but not least, I “looked” over the Actif Ultra Pearl Palette. This five-color eye shadow collection features fabulous chic selections in shades of brown, blue, green, pink, and vanilla. It’s a nice range of hues to choose from that can cover your eyes creatively day and night. My favorite eye product? Eye Patrol in Private Desert. This shade I like to wear all the time. It’s a light pink hue with sparkling accents that provides just the right oomph to the eyes – lightly apply it for a basic brilliance or layering more on if you want your eyes to be in the limelight.

Napoleon Cosmetics are available at various Saks Fifth Avenue stores or check out the website at
