And they’re back! (the 1980’s that is). This month’s color story features fall’s favorite recycled looks from the days of the “Brat Pack.” Molly Ringwald, Jami Gertz, and Demi Moore – who can forget their totally unforgettable style in Pretty in Pink, Less than Zero, and St. Elmo’s Fire? These recreations are currently all over the runway, and here’s a how to on: The ’80’s.
Who can forget Jami Gertz in her sleek, black cleavage bearing blazer, turning up the heat with Andrew McCarthy at their posh Los Angeles Christmas soiree? The hair – black, the clothes – black, the fingernails – red. The look: Pale, powdered skin, black mascara, black liquid liner, and hot red lips. This look is Beverly Hills Vamp. This simple yet sexy style works for all complexions. Just remember to carefully select your shade of red lipstick wisely. For fair to medium skins, stick to a true blue based red, like Stila’s Salome. For olive complexions, look for a warmer, orange base, like Chantecaille’s Cayenne. And for the deepest complexions, look for violet toned reds, like MAC’s Diva. Then pinch your cheeks, and go.
Ahhh…Pretty in Pink. Blondes, Brunettes and redheads can all benefit from the soft, feminine look of smoky, smudged liner, rosy cheeks, and neutral lips. First, try a tinted moisturizer, like Laura Mercier’s to even out complexion and keep skin hydrated and dewy. Apply under eye concealer in the inside corners of the eyes for brightening. I love Benefit Boi-ng. Next, dust on a rosy bronzer such as Givenchy’s Le Make Up Visage in Happy Sun, for that youthful glow. For fairer skin, try Nars Orgasm blush for the perfect balance of pink, peach, and gold. On the eyes, smudge a cream liner like Bobbi Brown Kohls on the lower third of the eyelid, in a medium toned slate, chocolate, or plum shade. Blend well, so there are no visible lines – just subtle glows. Finish with brown mascara to keep the eyes in a soft focus finish, and pick a warm pink lip color like Clinique’s Tenderheart Lipstick. Then watch the boys fight over you.
Rock Star chic is definitely a top priority this year in fashion. The look is vivid color, overdrawn eyes, and everything metallic. Prep skin with a semi-matte or matte finish foundation like Stila Illuminating Powder Foundation, SPF 12. Lavender, silver, and black create the perfect 80’s eye palette. Try Chanel Illuminating Shadow in Abysse for a beautiful wash of lilac. Cheeks shimmer with a hot, fuchsia blush like Yves Saint Laurent #8. Line eyes inside and out with a black or plum pencil. Then apply two to three coats of black mascara. In keeping with the drama queen theme, try a waterproof formula like Lancôme Flax WP Waterproof Curving Mascara. For lips, pick cool toned violets and metallic pinks from Delux Beauty. Add rubber bracelets, and rock on!
