The color purple is often associated with the rich, the royal, and the regal, as well as the pop star Prince, and Barney the Dinosaur. There are tons of shades of purple, and since February’s birthstone is the lovely amethyst, we’ve sought out the most fab purple lip products for your pout.

If you’re no shrinking violet and want ‘look at me’ lips, then Nars has a vast collection of power purples in all 3 of its lines – lipstick, gloss, and lacquer. Revolt gloss looks intimidatingly black in the tube. But it translates to a lip hugging, sheer, punched up grape on your lips, and it looks particularly fab when paired with shimmery brown eye shadow. Muted plum Damage lipstick is especially gorgeous when you slick burgundy Zou Zou Lip Lacquer over top. Chica Boom lacquer is a gothy grape crossed with eggplant, so if you want to avoid looking like a blood sucking vampire, warm skin with bronzer first!

Dreamy, soft purples get plenty of real estate from Chanel. The Summer Plum Glossimer is a pinky plum infused with shimmer. Lilac Sky Crème Lipstick is a mauvey lavender, and the silky Surprise from the company’s Luminous Satin lipstick line, glides on like a balm, and coats lips in a kissable, feminine, lilac sheen.

If wet, wild, and ‘Wowsa!’ is what you want, then there’s 2 glosses you need to own, pronto. YSL’s Golden Gloss #8 is a sheer black currant, gleaming with golden flecks that provide a patent leather shine. The fruity scent and taste doubles as a breath freshener. Gotta love multi-tasking make up! If you crave a super wet, uber shiny look, Estee Lauder High Gloss in Amethyst is a pale, cushiony lavender.

Clinique also possesses a vast palette. Glosswear in LaLa Lilac gives you the slightest, sheerest kiss of color, and perfectly complements a plum smoky eye. Soft Shine lipstick in Black Violet is a bold shade for daring rocker chicks, while Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Perfect Plum and Crushed Grape are golden plums that pack a rich color punch with loads of shine, so we recommend them for when you’re not wearing any other make up, since they’ll give you a substantial dose of color and will brighten up your entire face. Be sure to apply with a lip brush, since the stick is wide and round.

If you wanna plump that pout, try Full Potential Lips in Double Plum, which’ll stain your lips with a sweet plum sheen.

Lastly, a little rule of thumb: when using deep, dramatic purples on your pucker, keep your peepers soft and subtle. -Amy Sciarretto
