Giving Back This Holiday Season

By Leslie Rice Hart

Thanksgiving is a great time to be thankful for what we have and help those less fortunate. Volunteering is a great way to give to others.

Among the organizations I’ve volunteered for are Meals on Wheels – www.mowaa.org, and The Ronald McDonald House – www.rmhc.com

Meals on Wheels provide meal services to the elderly, homebound, disabled, frail, or to those people at risk. Many of their regular volunteers take off during the holiday season, leaving the organization with a shortage of help during these times. The Ronald McDonald House Charities provide a home away from home for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. When the families come to visit the children during the holidays, volunteers work together and cook. Their efforts provide a hot holiday meal for the families to enjoy together. Go to their websites and get your local information.

There are so many other reputable charities that need our help. New York Cares is an organization that gathers volunteers for different charitable organizations that need extra help during the holiday season. Contact them at www.NYCares.org. Make your Thanksgiving a truly rewarding experience by volunteering for one of them.
