City Pulse
January 2009

By Lauren Torrisi

While most of you ladies rang in the New Year partying in some of NYC’s hottest clubs, I was holed up in New Hampshire eating copious amounts of pizza, watching the ball drop with my boyfriend. Relaxing? Yes. Fattening? Ohhhh yes.

When I got back to the cityon January 4th, I was struck with thoughts of panic. What am I going to wear to work on Monday? How many articles of clothing do I own that contain Lycra? Could I take money out of my life savings for liposuction?

Then it hit me- I needed to take responsibility for the fact that I ate all those Christmas cookies. However, I also needed to forget my holiday indulging and move forward. This year is going to be about small changes in my daily routine that make a big difference in my overall health. And while I don’t consider myself overweight, I would like to tone up and get my booty firm. I also would like to give up some bad habits and practice healthy eating.

Trying this all at once is daunting. Baby steps, people, baby steps!!! So this week I’m starting by keeping a food log. I’m writing down everything I eat, the time, and the place where I eat it. My goal is to eat meals in the kitchen or dining room. (No more breakfasts in bed watching Regis & Kelly). Once I get used to this, I’ll incorporate another healthy change into my lifestyle. Follow me each week as I update you on the changes I’ve been making and the progress I’ve made towards my goal.

Of course this means I need to avoid the chocolate layer cake with buttercream icing, chocolate sprinkles and caramel drizzle that’s in the refrigerator. Instead, I’ll focus on how cute those skinny jeans look when I can finally zipper them up.
