Directly in the heart of Manhattan is the Hyatt Centric Hotel — a block away from Times Square. This is the latest in our coverage on rooftop lounges. Bar 54 is a diamond in the sky with incredible views of midtown, downtown and both rivers. The cocktail menu sets the standards up high, the shared plates are inspired and tasty but get ready to dig deep into your pockets or purse.

I took my friend, Ivan, who is also a local Super Hero and likes to scale skyscrapers on occasion. We entered thru the lobby during this visit. Here is what you need to know if you are not staying at the hotel or simply want to go ‘up on the roof’ this summer. Enter the bar on the ground level and a host will give you a hotel pass. Exit the lobby and take an elevator up on the right hand side to the 54th floor. A receptionist or manager will greet you and take the access card. You might have to sit in the lounge for a bit until a table outside becomes available. It’s worth the wait. This view is overlooking the Paramount Theater — where Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Ozzy Osborne and more performed. Bar 54 is the tallest rooftop lounge in Times Square.

Ivan and I got a chance to see our cityscape like most tourists visiting midtown who are in the know — the intoxicating cocktail menu is equal to the vista. This summer’s creations include fresh, handcraft cocktails like the Lawn Party made with Tanqueray 10, grapefruit juice, St. Germain, simple syrup, lemon juice, Campari and strawberries. I personally recommend the Hawaiian Iced Tea concocted with Stolichnaya orange vodka infused with Liliuokalani black tea, mint tea syrup, lemon juice and water. Thirst quenching!

You might also want to imbibe with the Red Hook Rita made with Tequila Blanco, mango, lime, Jalapeño, ancho reyes, Hellfire bitters. Or toast your family with the Abualita and Tequila Añejo, Godiva Liqueur, Amaro and cinnamon. While the cocktails are flavorful and interesting, the real applause goes to the views of Broadway.

For shared plates, Bar 54 offers a variety of bites including a burger with truffle relish, provolone cheese as well as chips or salad. The Porchetta Sliders are prepared with roasted and flavorful pork, pickled cucumbers, mayo and chips. I also recommend the Charcuterie Platter with a selection of meats and cheese as well as a marmalade that’s worth tossing off the roof if it weren’t illegal.

While the great masses exit the city for the Hamptons and beyond, I recommend that you take advantage of what’s happing right in the city because the hot spots are easier to gain access to without waiting. Bar 54 is part of a series on rooftop lounges. Check back with our City Pulse section for more suggestions on everything that’s going on in and around Manhattan this summer.
