After four years of residency in New York City, it’s become blatantly obvious that a good hairstylist – unlike Starbucks – is not, in fact, located on every corner. After hundreds of wasted dollars and countless horrifying hairdos (an appalling incarnation of The Wedge, for one), I’d resigned myself to the fact that I’d never be truly happy with my tumultuous tresses.
So when I heard about the Lower East Side opening of the first US-based Tommy Guns salon, I did a little reconnaissance. Owner Russell Manley runs three successful shops in London (the first of which opened in 1994) and boasts celebrity clientele like Kate Moss, Jude Law and Courtney Love. The emphasis on the experience at Tommy Guns is that of a traditional barbershop feel with upscale services – and the indulgence is open to both men and women.
Because I couldn’t really argue with 15 years of excellence, an A-list client roster, or the prospect of a laid-back salon experience, I scheduled an appointment and trudged forth, cautiously optimistic.
And let me just tell you: I was blown right out of my leather-padded, chrome-embellished chair.
The salon itself is like a trip through time – located on trendy Ludlow Street, the space is arranged with vamped-up barber chairs, glass-faced silver cabinets lined with products, tin ceilings (complete with an antique fan), a swank reception area adorned with a vintage cash register, and even a spiral staircase leading to a lower level, which houses a roomy, comfortable bathroom.
My stylist, Derek, immediately put me at ease during our consultation. We discussed my hair’s shape and texture, and I lamented to him my prior hair woes. Where others would be intimidated, Derek – with his gorgeous Scottish accent and years of experience at Tommy Guns London under his scissor-laden belt – simply smiled and sent me to be shampooed.
What ensued was a supremely enjoyable cut that left me staring – mouth agape – at my chic, styled hair in the mirror. I am officially a Tommy Guns client.
All of my gloating would be in vain, surely, if it weren’t for the fact that the fantastic staff at Tommy Guns is offering a 25% discount off the first haircut for all BeautyNewsNYC readers – just schedule an appointment, bring along the attached coupon, and prepare for instant beautification!
