One of my favorite designers is Carmen Marc Valvo, so again I was thrilled by his Spring 2012 evening and swim wear collection. As dramatic as the styles and Valvo himself, the show was held at the NASDAQ Building in Times Square during NYFW. Clothes and models exuded classic American beauty, with makeup and hair trends young and wearable.

Makeup design was done by Romero Jennings, Senior Artist at M.A.C. Cosmetics, for a final look that was easy and approachable. Here’s how he played to the model’s natural beauty: He moisturized the face with mineral charged moisture gel. To highlight cheekbones, Matchmaster SPF 15 Foundation was blended in and Studio Finish Concealer dabbed where needed. Prep + Prime Finishing Powder was pressed down the center of face, taupe sculpt powder contoured under the cheekbones, and a pearl cream-color base was patted with fingers onto cheeks and brow bones. Mirror Pro Longwear gloss was patted on top.

Eyes were clean and neutral. Coffee pencil was dotted into crease and blended out, then Omega eye shadow buffed on top. Lashes were curled and required little mascara, just one coat of 200M Lash Fast Black. Mirror Pro Longwear gloss was patted with finger on eye lid and Nylon eye shadow on brow bone pressed on and buffed out.

The punch to the model’s face was the lips, completely matte. A neon cherry lip pencil was filled in completely, and an exciting Scarlet Ibis coral red was then pressed in. This is a new color from M.A.C. and will be available soon. (Http://

Master Stylist Ted Gibson provided hair design reminiscent of American sportswear and Peggy Lipton from the 1970s The Mod Squad. Hair is flat, shiny and smooth, effortlessly chic to work well with Valvo’s clothes. The finished look was achieved with build it blow drying agent® sprayed on for body and volume while fix it styling gel® held tresses in place. Hair was then made straight with a flat iron and beautiful hold® hairspray was finally applied. Manes looked super shiny with Gibson’s style products. (Http://

After my interviews, I enjoyed a glass of wine and landed a terrific seat for the runway show. I quickly saw how the makeup and hair trends heralded the timeless American quality of Valvo’s collection. His clothes are breathtaking and sophisticated, and many pieces are interchangeable – a plus! As always, the designer is a master of his craft, beautifully working with the finest of fabrics, such as chiffon, organza, taffeta, cashmere, and more. All women, at any age, can wear his gowns at those spectacular events of our lives.

I’d like to add my sincerest thanks to the gracious people working at Carmen’s show, from makeup, hair and press relations They make reporters feel welcomed and like family. The entire evening was intimate and cozy.
