As someone who’s been making some conscious eco-friendly decisions about my daily routine, I can tell you that I still have yet to take the plunge into organic clothing. I mean that’s a lot for the environment to ask of me, organic cotton bath towels are one thing but a dress, a tee; I’m still not entirely on board.
That’s where hessnatur comes in; the fabulous organic apparel brand that we’ve raved about in the past is now taking part in an “Eco-Tee Design Challenge.” This rare opportunity for budding designers and green crusaders to make an environmental statement and a name for themselves is also a great way to slowly introduce yourself to eco-fashionista-land. The contest has been designed to highlight the positive impact that just one simple organic tee can have on the world; Wolf Luedge, CEO of hessnatur states, “It is a little known fact that the growth and harvesting of conventional cotton causes some of the world’s worst environmental pollution — one third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to create just one of the 2.4 billion tees produced globally every year. If we can highlight this in an engaging way, we are one step closer to making a healthier world.”
After an initial judging by Planet Green editors, the public will be called upon to vote for the design they feel is the most creative and original. Once five finalists have been selected, the winner will be chosen by a panel of eco-conscious, fashion-savvy judges including Blake Mycoskie, Founder of TOMS Shoes, Miranda Purves, Lifestyle Editor of ELLE, Summer Rayne Oakes, model and environmental activist, and Miguel Adrover, fashion designer and Creative Director of hessnatur. So really, it’s like your own mini reality show, except instead of designing a gown made of candy wrappers and sequins, it’s a t-shirt and you’re not only showing your design chops but you’re helping the environment. And well…that’s good enough for me.
