City Pulse

By Jasmin Guleria

sweet_summer_freebie2.jpg After a short blip off the City Pulse radar, I’m back to confess my progress thus far! As you all know, I started training with Mike Shaw of New York Personal Training 4 weeks ago with a goal of losing 10-15 lbs. in one month. Since then, I’ve been training with Mike for 30 minutes a day/5 times a week followed by a 30-minute intense cardio session on my own.

Since starting at NYPT, I’ve steadily been losing inches and pounds. This week, Mike decided to speed up my weight-loss by putting me on a detox diet to “cleanse my system, curb my cravings, and allow my body to begin processing foods in a new, more efficient, healthier way.”

As I ate the healthiest I’ve ever eaten, my body silently cleaned out all the toxins left over from my past months of cupcake and pizza indulgences. To be honest, in the beginning, the detox left my sweet-tooth-loving-self cranky, tired, and frustrated. What kept me going? Motivation from my personal trainer and the sheer terror of failing in front of thousands of my readers! Plus, in the grand scheme of things, 7 days of uber-restrictive eating felt worth it for a healthier, slimmer, and cleansed body. On my final day on the detox plan, I jumped on the scale and found out that I had lost a whopping five pounds in 1 week! Add that to the five I lost gradually within the first three weeks, and it makes for a total of 10 pounds lost in four weeks!!

The most surprising result of the detox plan was definitely the fact that my cravings for sugar have decreased significantly. For example, I had a small cupcake cheat the other day but was only able to eat half because the sugar was unappealing to my newly cleansed system. In my pre-training, sugar-junkie world of months past, eating half a cupcake and finding it ‘too sweet’ was unheard of.

Stay tuned for the September issue of BN – where I will reveal my final results and profile the gym, my nutrition plan, and how I’m keeping the weight off post-training.
