City Pulse

By Allison Warenik-Queenan

Two of my favorite contemporary lines (you may hear this phrase often from me being the clotheshorse that I am), Tibi and Milly, showed their Spring 2011 collections this past week at Lincoln Center. Both delivered such an aura of beauty and femininity that I almost expected to see animated blue birds fly down the runway, chirping away. Inside the Tents, I nearly forgot that it was just the beginning of autumn.

Makeup at Tibi was created by the living cosmetics legend, Bobbi Brown. Bobbi used ultra feminine colors; a Lilac Rich Lipcolor, Desert Pink Blush, Ivory Shadow on the eyelids and Black Ink and Plum Orchard liner. Pattie Yankee for Dashing Diva did nails in a pretty light pink shade called Debutante, evoking a springtime feeling.

Hairstylist Kevin Ryan and Frank Rizzieri created a simple, yet elegant ponytail on the models. Using Kevin’s own pinpoint iron, which he created for R Session Tools, he immaculately straightened the hair and combed it into a side part. He used a bit of Aveda Styling Volumizing Tonic, pulled the hair into an elastic band (while brushing a strand of the model’s hair over the elastic to hide it), and set with Conair Hairspray, because as Kevin told me, “There is no other hairspray.” (What an endorsement!).

The clothing was simple, but beautiful and felt light and airy. Colors ranged from whites to light mustards to bright oranges and purples. Exactly the hues I look for when the drab March weather ends. Appliqués of small flowers graced the bottoms of dresses and jackets confirming that if we just grin and bear it through the harsh New York winter that lies ahead of us, spring will indeed be waiting, just around the corner.

Spring was in the air again at Milly, but with a little less airiness and a bit more glamour. Using Peggy Guggenheim as her inspiration, designer Michelle Smith, added elements of bold tribal patterns to her collection.

Kevin Ryan and Frank Rizzieri once again did hair. The look was slightly undone, straight but a bit messy. Extensions were added for texture and the overall look was very cool. Turbans were added for the runway show to invoke Peggy’s personal style. Romy Soleimani and the M.A.C. Pro Team did makeup. The look was all about the orange lip (THE makeup trend for spring). The lip was a combination of Devilish Orange base with Orange Lip Mix and was blotted to appear matte. Coral blush was used on the cheek and gloss was put on the eyelid, making the skin look fresh. Mascara was lightly brushed over the top lashes.

Priti NYC did nails, again in a feminine, pale pink shade. I have to tell you, I was starting to feel just a bit self-conscious in my new fall Khaki color polish. I don’t know what season I am in!

Every last piece in the collection was to-die-for and certainly evoked a well-travelled, artistic woman on her spring European holiday (a look I certainly strive for). And the geometric Peggy Guggenheim glasses were a perfect finish touch. Someone get me to my palazzo in Venice please!
