In recent months, the iPhone has gone from novelty; luxury item to near necessity, so much so that a six-year-old boy I know refers to all cell phones as “iPhone.” The number of applications available grows daily, and many of them are starting to seem ridiculous.

Then, all of the sudden, Epicurious comes along and creates an essential app we just couldn’t live without. The website (along with its partners Gourmet and Bon Appetit) has gained a large following in recent months and it seemed only natural that an application was on its way.

The result turns out to be incredibly useful, especially for those of us in the traditional sticky-note and cookbook school of cooking. First of all, users can access more than 30,000 food and drink recipes with a touch of the touch screen. You can also create grocery lists based on the recipes you’ve chosen for easy shopping in the store, it allows you to check off items as you go.

Finally, because frankly it is getting hard to read through the yellowed, torn and stained pages of my grandmother’s Betty Crocker cookbook (though I will always cherish it), the iPhone app will let you pull up the recipes while you cook to follow step by step instructions in your kitchen and bring your culinary dreams to life.
