City Pulse

By Ashley Goldsmith

While 9/11 was an entirely different type of catastrophe than the disaster that took place in Haiti, that day and the weeks and months that followed showed the world how New Yorkers can pull together and create an enormous relief effort. If you haven’t already (or even if you have) texted HAITI to 90999, consider donating through the city’s greatest restaurants, fashionable charities and our favorite beauty brands.

New York’s ever-booming restaurant industry has created a joint effort called Dine Out for Haiti. BN favorites like Five Points, The Mermaid Inn and Kefi will be donating 10% of their dinner sales from this Sunday, January 24th to the earthquake relief efforts of Action Against Hunger, Doctors Without Borders and Partners in Health. If you’ll be at the Lady Gaga concert on Sunday night like yours truly (don’t judge me!), head to dinner on Monday night, January 25th at Alto, Convivio or Marea. All will be donating 10% of their dinner sales to the United Nations World Food Program. For a full list of participating restaurants in NYC and across the country visit http://www.dineout4haiti.com.

Why not start an early spring cleaning of your closet? Or take a break from your morning latte and put that $5 a day to good use. Fashion Delivers, the charity dedicated to donating men’s and women’s apparel to victims of disasters and those in need year round, is looking for an assortment of lightweight apparel for men and women, such as t-shirts, jeans, shorts, active wear, etc. and basic items such as underwear, socks, sheets or lightweight blankets as well as baseball caps, sneakers and sleepwear. Log onto http://www.fashiondelivers.org to find out how you can donate.

If you’re locks are in need of a little love, head to Patrick Melville Salon this Sunday, January 24th, where every penny spent on any service booked between 12 and 6 pm will be donated to the relief effort. Call 212.218.8650 to schedule your appointment. From now until the end of the month, model-turned-natural-beauty-maven, Josie Maran will be donating 50% of proceeds from all sales of her products to the American Red Cross. Why not check out her first hair product? The Argan Oil Hair Serum is sure to give your locks a bit of shine this winter. Visit http://www.josiemaran.com to check out the full product line.
