The economy may be plummeting, but designers raised the bar during NY Fashion Week for Spring 2009. Political and social arenas are in a state of disarray, but fashion came through to put our minds (and bodies) at ease. No hidden agendas here – lots of bare chests and transparent fabrics marched down those runways. A variety of shapes and cuts replaced the somberness of everyday gloom, showing everything from boxy cuts to shapely gowns to playful ruffles.

And as the saying goes, the biggest surprise came in a little package: Christian Siriano, the Season 4 winner of Project Runway proved to be more than a reality TV show flash-in-the-pan. His subdued palette of grays and what he called “…tonal colors, inspired by the sky and clouds” allowed us to see both the romantic and “fierce” side of his pieces. A burst of neon (“the lightning effect”) allowed for the collection of ruffled dresses, sheer organza tops, and simple blouses with beautifully carved sleeves, to pop in that fabulous Christian way. His collection was cohesive, perfectly tailored and had a flair all its own. Siriano made his mark and gave us hope that the American dream is alive and well and can appear in the form of a pretty dress.
