|Every December 8th, my best friend and I venture to Strawberry Fields in Central Park for our annual “hippie fest” in which we stand in the freezing cold celebrating the life of the genius that was John Lennon, singing his songs and standing around with peace signs- you get the idea. Last year the anniversary of his death fell on a weekday and so we scoured the internet in search of celebrations we could partake in over the weekend. That’s when we stumbled upon New Arts NYC, a group of young artists and entrepreneurs looking to inspire a quest for a better society through music, much like the ideas of Mr. Lennon himself.|
With a philosophy of “aspiring to increase artistry’s positive influence on society,” hippie or not, you really can’t help but be inspired. Their “For the Love of Lennon” performance that took place that weekend was a great tribute to the legend and left my friend and I itching to learn more about the organization and about their upcoming performances.
Finally, 6 months after the Lennon tribute the New Arts gang is joining together again to present New Arts in the Park. The event will feature an eclectic assortment of original music presented by 14 musicians, many of the same artists from the Lennon event, who have collaborated for the purpose of recording a live album.
So head to the park this Saturday, enjoy some free music and support a musically inspired movement to bring people together. Jimi Hendrix put it best when he said, “Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.”
