For Spring/Summer 2013, Jason Wu presented a collection that held all of his usual sophistication, but with sensual and provocative touches throughout. Inspired by Helmut Newton’s seductive and erotic photos, the collection contrasted hard and soft elements on the figure to create strong, womanly pieces. Leather, lace and chiffon made up most of the collection, in mostly neutral colors of black, white, nude and touches of navy and fuschia. Body-conscious silhouettes were detailed with structured and intricate seams and layers of sheer drapery.

The makeup look to complement the clothes was a very strong and bold look, and was created by the MAC Pro Team, with Diane Kendal as the lead. The look started with fresh skin as the base, then accented with a full, elegant brow, filled in with MAC brow pencils. The cheek color, “Poised”, was high up on the cheekbone and the face was contoured with “Taupe Shape”, below the cheekbone and back towards the ear. “Taupe Shape” was also used to contour the eyes in the crease of the lid as well as below the bottom lash line for eye definition. The eyes were dusted with MAC Gold Pigment Powder along the lids and on the inner corner of the eyes, and finished off with black cream eyeliner and black mascara on the top lashes. For an extra dramatic touch, the lips were layered with several shades of red for dimension and a glamorous effect. “Cherry Red” lip liner filled in the whole lip, then layered with “Vino”, a darker shade. Then, “Lady at Play” lipstick was layered on top for a matte finish. Overall, the face was very sexy and hard edged; yet with sophistication that suits Wu’s design aesthetic.

The hair was expertly done by Odile Gilbert of Kerastase. To create a sleek look for the hair, Gilbert divided the hair into two sections, front and back. The back section was blown out straight with Kerastase heat styling crème called Nectar Thermique, and then French braided and tucked under at the bottom to form a braided chignon. The front section was parted on the side and styled in large, glamorous and sleek waves on one side using Kerastase Double Force Multi Protector Spray. Then, for a final provocative touch, a very fine, sheer black net was tied across the face and secured in the hair, creating a glamorous and dramatic edge for each look.

Wu’s collection showed an evolution of the brand, bringing in a sexier, more seductive edge to the elegant and poised woman he dresses.
