City Pulse

By Anne Jones

Uptown, not uptight, is the mantra behind this hotel and I’d certainly concur after my visit. This hotel is a staple for New Yorkers thanks to The Burger Joint, a no-frills greasy spoon tucked into the elegant hotel that’s frequented by devout locals and burger connoisseurs. Getting into the pool and rooftop deck with access to the fitness center, Gravity, will set you back $100 per day-pass unless you’re a member or hotel guest, but it’s oh-so-worth-it on the hottest New York day.

I skipped the work-out, but peeked at the gym and attest to the proclaimed top-notch facilities I’ve read about. My mission awaited me on the Penthouse floor where the attendant kindly greeted me and promptly asked for my pass (note: good luck sneaking in). This same woman also handed me a warm towel after my swim. The glass-enclosed pool is kept at the most comfortable temperature and cleaned with salt-water, which is a natural form of chlorination and much better for the skin. Surrounded by plush chaises and only a few lap-swimmers, it’s a truly relaxing experience.

Step out on the sundeck and you’ll immediately be greeted with 360 views of Manhattan and sunning Speedo-sporting members slathered in oil. There are three levels with faux grass and chaise lounges (the top level has the smallest spot of shade) and both the sundeck and the pool offer the room service menu. I happened to be there on one of the warmest Saturday’s of the summer and practically had the place to myself. Le Parker Meridien is not the place to be seen and that’s exactly the point.

CP Steal: Gravity fitness center is offering 100 limited edition packages that include a three month membership and access to the fabulous rooftop pool, 12 personal training sessions and 12 massages. Normally $3,270, you can now score this sweet deal for only $1,700!
