In keeping with our theme this month of honouring companies and organizations that give back, we wanted to mention the folks at Shop Well With You, an organization dedicated to helping women who are dealing with cancer maintain or achieve a healthy body image through clothing and fashion. Through education, outreach and personalized services, SWY focuses on the woman, not the cancer, to provide support and promote survivorship. Their unique approach to wellness has caught the attention of such industry leaders from Eileen Fisher to Glamour and Lucky magazines.
Last year, SWY used its expertise to create the SWY Guide to Body Image and Cancer, an educational booklet that is the first of its kind to use clothing to address and assist with the abovementioned body-image concerns. As more and more women survive cancer and live longer, the need to move beyond being identified as a cancer survivor and instead be recognized by one’s other attributes has grown in importance.
With the support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, SWY has created this guide and provided women with helpful tips when seeking garments that are:
– Comfortable after surgery as well as years after treatment
– Accommodating for ports, drains, and prostheses
– Safe to wear with an ostomy
– Accommodating for lymphedema, or swelling in the arms due to lymph node removal
– Helpful when dealing with hair loss
– Flattering, functional, and fun
By making the Shop Well with You Guide to Body-Image and Cancer available to healthcare providers nationwide, SWY has provided a long-sought-after solution for women struggling with cancer-related body image issues. More importantly, this 16-page booklet is not only designed to accompany its user to the mall, but to her own closet, allowing her to find clothing in her own wardrobe that will improve her quality of life, during and after treatment.

Rock Your Chakras
Rocks for your Chakras
The history of gemstones dates back thousands of years. It’s a rich history full of colorful stories about power, passion and even healing. Some believe that certain gemstones hold mystical powers. Others have held the belief that some of these “rocks” have their own energy (each type of gemstone has its own unique structure, which vibrates at a particular rate creating its individual characteristics). The study of the attributes of gemstones has been passed down throughout time, and it was the belief in these attributes which led to the first pieces of jewelry, as the ancients found themselves desirous of new ways to carry their precious stones with them at all times. Quite impressive for mere “rocks”, huh?
Chakras are centers in the body through which our personal energy flows. The word Chakra is Sanskrit and signifies (one of seven) basic energy centers in the body. In addition, Chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, developmental stages of life, colors, bodily functions and much more.
It is believed that certain gemstones relate to the Chakras and aid in balancing the energy centers of the body. Rocks. Chakras. ROCKRAS. The natural progression? Perhaps…or perhaps a step back into history. As much as it is a progressive notion to some that stones can be utilized for healing, energy alignment, luck and other traits…it is a time-honored concept to many.
