City Pulse

By Caroline Davis

There’s nothing quite so blissful as spending a breezy summer evening lounging under the city stars. (I swear it’s possible – skyscrapers, smog and all). When NYC’s roofs open up for the warm months, your day is certain to take on an extra sparkle of excitement – and a helluva view. Check out these rooftop events before the fall sweeps in to shut them down.

Movie buffs can snuggle up on the Rooftop at Ravel in Long Island City when the rooftop theater showcases “Reel look at NYC” movie nights on Mondays. 8-08 Queens Plaza South, 718.289.6101

Or make sure to catch part of the 2009 Rooftop Films Summer Series, which presents both feature-length and short independent, underground films in a variety of locations across the city. Don’t miss film works by the Animation Block Party on July 24 or the self-proclaimed “worst movie ever” Troll 2 on July 30. And don’t worry the night doesn’t have to end when the credits start rolling. All screenings are preceded by live music and followed by an after party. 232 3rd Street @ 3rd Avenue or 50 Bedford Avenue @ North 13th Street, 718.417.7362

Feeling artsy? Jutting from the top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Roof Garden is artist Roxy Paine’s massive sculpture creation “Maelstrom”. Explore the Met and take in this commanding stainless steel pipe exhibit on Friday or Saturday nights when the museum is open until 9 p.m. And to fuel your creative juices? The Roof Garden’s martini bar, of course. Maelstrom will run until October 25. 1000 Fifth Avenue, 212.570.3951

Shaken, not stirred, or however you like it. But prepare to get your mix on at SUSHISAMBA 7 on July 20. The “Shake, Muddle and Pour” event kicks off at 1 p.m. with a battle amongst aspiring mixologists for the most creative cocktail concoction. Register for entry to the competition or just show up and enjoy a tasty beverage or two. 87 Seventh Avenue South, 212.691.7885

And for the nature gals: the rooftop at the Empire Hotel hosts a raffle organized by Outdoor Bound Adventures on July 31. Treat yourself to win a variety of gear, trips, and gift bags that will be up for grabs throughout the evening. Advance registration is required for the event, but admission is free. And make sure to arrive early to take full advantage of the open bar from 6 to 7 p.m. 44 West 63rd Street, 212.265.7400
