City Pulse

By Ashley Goldsmith

As if you needed another reason to splurge on your daily caffeinated beverage, starting yesterday December 1st, in honor of World AIDS Day, Starbucks donated five cents from every beverage sold to the Global Fund. This will mark the beginning of a month long partnership with Product (RED) to donate five cents from every Starbucks (RED) beverage to help fight AIDS in Africa.

Starbucks (RED) beverages include the Espresso Truffle, Peppermint Mocha Twist, and Gingersnap Latte. All will be offered with donations from now until January 2nd. Now I know you’re wondering about that amount, 5 cents, does it really even make a difference? But if you think about it that’s a dollar for every 20 people buying a drink at the caffeine house and in one day your average store serves about 5 million people. So if my math is right that means you and I and Starbucks fiends at a single location could donate over 2 million dollars to the Global Fund. Oh, and by the way, there are over 250 locations across the city (your turn to do the math). Now it doesn’t sound as insignificant anymore right?

So what are you waiting for? I know you’re sleepy and you need a caffeine boost, so abandon your animosity towards big name corporations and their over-priced coffee for at least one day and enjoy a Venti half-caff triple soy chai mocha misto latte with 1 tea bag extra hot. (Does that order even make sense?)
