City Pulse

The Big Easy’s seen some hard times lately. When nature takes over, there’s no holding back. Absolut™ New Orleans can’t fight nature, but it is all-natural and continues to keep it real by sending 100% of its profits to Katrina-related organizations. The minimum contribution is $2 million, so leave those red plastic cups behind and start drinking for a purpose. Organizations including Hands On Gulf Coast and the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity will benefit from the donation.

So, what exactly does New Orleans taste like? I was quite happy when I realized that the vodka would not taste like crawfish etoufée (wonderful in it’s own right but on the rocks I fear, it would falter), the sweat from a sorority girl’s Mardi Gras beads, or a backwashed Hurricane in souvenir cup from the nearest restaurant chain.

Thankfully, none of the above apply. Absolut™ New Orleans is flavored with sumptuous mango and a touch of black pepper, but before you scrunch your nose up – who dares to infiltrate my drink with spices!?!?! – take a sip.

And sip we did at the New York launch of Absolut™ New Orleans held at the Prince George Ballroom. Between the Ruth Chris™ sexy steak sandwiches and the cute bartenders making sure we were taken care of, the evening was quite comforting to both the stomach and the liver. The Prince George Ballroom, lit in red lights and hued with dark shadows, gave the event a classy ambiance awhile keeping its New York edge.

Remembering the cause was simple, just wade into the front hall for another lemon peppery martini, and you were faced with poster sized shots of post-Katrina New Orleans, jazz tunes, and autographed Absolut bottles up for auction – even Whoopi Goldberg is supporting the cause. The balance of light and dark, fun and reality, sweet and spicy really summed up the night.

Help yourself and someone else – who needs way more than a drink – and serve up some Absolut™ New Orleans cocktails at your next soirée. Drinking never had a better cause. Don’t procrastinate like you have to go to a family reunion or anything, though. This is a limited edition product, with only 35,000 cases to be sold. At $19, they won’t last long, so help a very worthy cause and your Friday night, and bring a little bit of the spirit of N’awlins home.
