City Pulse

By Susan Romero

I admit that when I first heard Anya Ponorovskaya had a new line of shoes, I thought: “The tennis player makes shoes now?” Of course, it wasn’t Anna Kournikova, but I was pleasantly surprised at the glitz and glamour of the shoes I saw. They are truly hot, but that is not all that this Russian born designer has to offer.

She has three boutiques in New York City called Girlcat and started a ready-to-wear line last spring. A handbag collection is in the works for next year, along with a fourth boutique.

You can check out her two boutiques in Manhattan on Elizabeth Street or one in Brooklyn. The stores are intimate and homey, some with exposed brick walls, painted wooden floors and curtains framing ultra feminine clothing, accessories and red-hot retro style shoes. Be a sexy siren in the ankle strap peep toes a la Rita Hayworth, or tone it down a notch with a more classic round toe pump in shiny patent leather.

The new shoe line is a perfect compliment to the feminine apparel that Ponorovskaya is known for, including sexy satin fitted cocktail dresses, sequined tops, and other unique but classic pieces. If you want special items that you won’t see on everyone else, Girlcat is for you.

Hollywood stars that crave one of a kind clothes and accessories, such as Angelina Jolie, Tea Leoni and Katie Erbe of Law and Order: Criminal Intent, have already discovered Girlcat. Erbe recently purchased several pairs of shoes in the store. Why not add your name to this list and check out Girlcat’s peep toe heels. You may just walk out kicking your heels up in your first pair.
