It happens every year, I’m completely content with my pasty white skin until the sun starts shining, the margaritas start flowing and I come to the conclusion that bathing suit season is upon me. Regardless of the temptation to bask in the warm rays to achieve bronzed goddess status, I know sun protection is a must.
First things first my little bathing beauties, be selective on what kind of sunscreen you drop into your shopping basket. We’re not talking slathering just anything on in a half-assed manner. Here’s a serious FYI: some sunscreens are more effective than others. There are so many new innovations in skin care that are hitting the market right now that you’ve gotta do your research to know what the differences are. The main idea to remember here is that your precious skin needs both UVA and UVB protection. Neutrogena has a line of sun protection with Helioplex, a technology that uses Avobenzone with Oxybenxone to help protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Many sunscreens offer protection with Parsol 1789, like Oil of Olay, which is a good agent in broad-spectrum sunscreen as well. But, the absolute crème de la crème of sun protection has been used in Europe and Asia for years, Mexoryl. It’s just been approved by the FDA and now available in the U.S. Mexoryl can give almost perfect protection against the sun. L’Oreal has a sunscreen containing the miracle ingredient and other products, mostly found in pharmacies with European brands, carry other options.
So, honey pies, that’s the 411 on sun protection. Whether you choose to rock what your mama gave you or spray what she didn’t, protect that skin, after all the wrapper is the prettiest part of any package.
