When it was brought to my attention that this issue of Beauty News was focusing on charity my first thought was how could I take the idea of charity and make it work in the dating world? Then it hit me.

Charity is not just something you do alone; its something you can do together. The saying goes, “two heads are better than one” and we New Yorkers can prove that statement true by working together as a twosome to make a difference all while spending quality time with our partners.

There are so many events happening in and around the city that you can fill up every weekend in your date book. And if you and your significant other choose to do these things together that means confirmed weekend plans of quality time all while working for a cause.

Here are some events coming up and how you as a duo can get involved:

Event: Comedy Benefit Event -Come get your Laugh On!!
Date: September 4th
Time: 7:30-10:00p.m.
This is a fun idea for a great date night out in the city. Grab your mate and get ready to listen to some of the best comics in NYC. The event is being held at HA Comedy Club located in the center of Times Square. The cost is only $20 a person and all proceeds go to the soup kitchen of NYC.

Event: The NYC Ice Cream Run 2008
Date: September 14th
Time: 1:30-5:30p.m.
If you love children this all day event would be a blast for two people to participate in together. The Sunday afternoon event is a fun filled day of activities put together to help raise awareness and money for the underprivileged children of NYC. The event consists of a scavenger hunt that will take you to 13 of the city’s best ice cream parlors. All proceeds are given to the non-profit organization Children for Children. There will also be entertainment and of course lots of delicious ice cream!

Event: Annual Hudson River Swim
Date: September 7th
Time: 9:00a.m.-?
Nothing peaks my interest more than a 3-mile jaunt across the Hudson River and it can be something interesting for you and your partner to participate in. You can also find a spot on the shore and watch all the excitement in the water. The event is happening in NYC’s backyard Sleepy Hollow and this swimming extravaganza features swimmers from all over the state of New York as they swim fearlessly across the Hudson River to help raise money for a series of charities in the area. This year they are swimming for The Lymphoma and Leukemia Society and Friends of Clair foundation for ALS disease. No need to have the swimming ability of Michael Phelps this is just for fun and there are many options for this event. You can sign up to swim three or one mile races, kayak, canoe, or even paddleboard across the river. This is an all day outside event fun for everyone.

Event: 2008 Komen New York City Race for a Cure
Date: September 14th
There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon then to go to Central Park on a nice day. Take a little jog. And fight breast cancer all at the same time. How can it get more perfect? The Komen New York City Race for the Cure is the premier charity event for NYC. If you and your date are not runners, no biggie they don’t require you to run the whole 5k. It’s a great way to spend the day together, get some exercise and help find a cure.

Event: The Green Ride
Date: October 11-13th
Time: 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m.
If you are a more athletic couple you might find interest participating in The Green Ride charity bike-a-thon. This is a three-day event that takes you on a journey from NYC to the Catskills and back. This 230-mile ride is to support two of New York’s environmental organizations, Black Rock Forest Consortium and Sustainable Hudson Valley. The registration fee is $100 which includes all meals and overnight stays in a “green” lodge for the weekend. Each team is responsible for raising a minimum of $1,800 for the event, which means some serious campaigning time for the two of you and plenty of quality time on the trails.

Event: Shakespeare on the Hudson
Date: September 6-21th
Time: 3:00-9:00p.m.
Plan a night to lounge near the river and indulge in the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet. The Friends of Hudson River Park are offering you this FREE benefit performance and a perfect date. Learn about how to save our parks while seeing the classics of William Shakespeare performed in a whimsical outdoor setting. Grab a blanket and cuddle up for a night of pure romance.
