Walk by a florist’s shop in the quiet air of the early morning just as the stems are being cut and the flowers are being arranged, and you’ll have that lovely olfactory sensation that starts your day with a smile. That’s the same delightful experience I get from Idylle Eau de Parfum, the newest creation from Guerlain. A gentle mist of peony, lily of the valley, lilac, freesia and Bulgarian rose that give this scent an ethereal and fragile air that’s not typical of Guerlain scents. Created by perfumer Thierry Wasser, who says, “I imagined a bouquet of fresh and sensual flowers for a symbol of love”. As the fragrance settles on the skin, a soft chypre of patchouli and white musk lasts and lasts.

Like my favorite Prada handbag which I enjoy more and more every time I wear it, I get the same feeling for Prada L’eau Ambree Parfum, a new scent and the third in a series of ambers, though this is no flanker. It stands on its own. The fragrance opens with citrus and its heart is composed of may rose and amber. For my taste, amber can often be too heavy and old fashioned however, L’eau Ambre, which means amber water, is soft and modern, and not watery at all. As the fragrance wears on, it gets more complex and notes of soft patchouli, vanilla, and sweet myrrh surround the wearer.  I often take sides as to whether I prefer the opening/middle notes of a scent, or its lasting dry down, however,  with this one, created by Daniela Andrier, I have no preference,  it’s all balanced so beautifully.

The Goddess of the Sun reinvents herself and she radiates in her jewel like bottle. Alien Eau de Toilette, from Thierry Mugler is a lighter interpretation of well loved Alien Eau de Partum. Housed in a beautifully faceted amethyst bottle, this newer version, from perfumer Dominique Ropion, adds a splash of tangerine essence that gives a sparkle to intense notes of jasmine grandiflorum, white amber and Kashmir wood.

The steamy, sexy commercial with Kate Moss lures us in, and then the lively fragrance keeps our interest…and his too! Perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Sophie Labbe have infused the new Parisienne by Yves St. Laurent with an opening tart note of cranberry that does for the scent what lip gloss does for a lipstick. After the spike, the floral heart beats with Damas rose, powdery violet and playful peony. Lasting sensuous notes are of patchouli, sandalwood, musk along with a hint of vetiver for a not-too-girly happy ending.

It’s no surprise that a woman as elegant as Carolina Herrera has come up with a scent that embraces La Vie en Rouge which celebrates life’s passions and elegance. CH by Carolina Herrera opens with a lively note of bergamot and brings us a bouquet of Bulgarian roses and jasmine and then treats us to the sweetness of praline and cinnamon. Final notes of sandalwood, patchouli and amber give it depth. Housed in a red leather clad bottle with a whimsical CH charm, this limited edition scent has certainly charmed me!
