Hair Care

By Liz Bekesz

We’ve borrowed their jackets, their tanks and tees, their crispest, whitest button-downs and their coziest cashmere socks. Along the way, we’ve managed to “make them our own” – sometimes, not even temporarily (wink-wink). We won’t stop until we reach the top; in this case, fine female friends, we’re talking hair. After all, don’t we typically have more of it to worry about – at least, we hope?

Herewith, some steal-worthy hair products that both sexes can covet:

Oribe Rough Luxury is a flexible paste wax that lends incredible separation and modern texture to hair. Hair is left softly touchable, pliable, and re-workable, with what the package calls a “semi-matte luster.” I refer to it as “the sheen that looks clean” – i.e., this stuff won’t grease or gunk up your hair; it will only add awesome-ness. Rough Luxury happens to be the favorite styling product of teen phenom Justin Bieber, whose thickly layered locks have become a signature look embraced worldwide. Bieber’s stylist, Vanessa Rose Price, says when using Rough Luxury, “We like to start off with a small amount in damp hair and once we’ve blow-dried his hair into a frenzied mess, we work in a little more product, focusing on the ends for added definition.” This method worked great for my layered hair as well, though it’s considerably longer and coarser: it created a perfect ‘invisible net’ of shape to my style, with no trace of stiffness or stickiness. (ASIDE: My boyfriend affectionately renamed this product “The Bieber Weaver;” I’ve never seen him enjoy playing with his overgrown curls so much. He’s since gotten summer-buzzed, leaving me the entire jar contents…cue evil laughter.) See for more info.

Jack Black is known and respected as a pioneer of superior modern skincare for men, with breakthrough shave formulas, trouble-shooting skincare, and body maintenance must-haves, including patented sun protection technology. The brand’s hair care is a collection you’ll be proud to steal, ahem, borrow from your man. Try Jack Black Sleek Finish Texture Cream in a tube for immediate smoothing, sleeking, taming, and conditioning. Hair (coarse, thick, and wavy textures) will especially appreciate this ultra-conditioning formula, which is creamy, yet lightweight and disappears seamlessly into hair, leaving behind nothing but a polished look, silky feel, and flexible, light control. Crafted with all those good things you’ve probably appreciated long before your man even knew they existed (well, at least in his bathroom), like panthenol, silk amino acids, lanolin, and jojoba and olive oils. Jack Black Sleek Finish Texture Cream is available at Saks Fifth Avenue and online at

Dirty Hair Styling Cream is a new offering from Gorilla Perfume at Lush. It’s chock-full of all those natural, recognizable Lush-loved ingredients like linseed gel, cocoa butter, balm herb infusion, glycerine, rosemary, and fair-trade extra virgin coconut oil. Pine oil, oakmoss absolute, and sandalwood are also present, though fear not, all ye who fear anything even remotely associated with hippies, for this “Dirty” concoction actually smells clean and new; fresh and earthy – yet it’s still light, with a touch of herbal goodness throughout. Simple, elemental, and pleasing, something about this stuff reminds me of the raw and rugged appeal of clay; perhaps it has to do with the product’s playful functionality. A new winner for hair of all lengths, genders, and persuasions. Use sparingly; a little goes a long way.

Available at LUSH stores and online at
