Hair Care

By Kathryn Holl

A New Year signifies many things: a renewed commitment to health, promises of being a better person and maybe even another attempt to save and invest your hard earned cash. We here at BeautyNews think a New Year should also promote trying new things. That’s why this January, we’ve taken a look at our favorite hair care products and chosen the ones we feel you should test on your tresses for better hair in 2007.

When it comes to shampoo, a salon product is always a safe bet, but not always the best choice when it comes to price. If you’re not looking to fork over $20 for every bottle of shampoo you douse on your hair, Clairol Herbal Essences shampoos will give you the best bang for your buck. This drug store staple cleans hair just as well as the fancy salon shampoos for half the price. They smell great and cleanse hair of styling build-up. An old favorite is the Replenishing Shampoo for Colored/Permed/Dry/Damaged hair. It leaves hair soft and manageable without fading color. A new favorite is the degunkify Tingling Deep Cleaning Shampoo. It will completely rid your hair of any gel, sprays or other styling products you use on a daily basis. And the tingling sensation is a nice surprise early in the am hours. In a nutshell, it leaves hair squeaky clean. Available at drug stores, degunkify Tingling Deep Cleaning Shampoo has a suggested retail price of $3.99.

Ask any stylist and they’ll tell you that one of the most important things to do for your hair is to condition and repair damage. When we heard about Frederic Fekkai’s new Protein Rx Treatment line we had to get our hair on it. Created as a reparative treatment for dry, brittle or broken hair, this line uses soy and milk proteins to repair damage to the hair cuticle. Reparative treatments are often heavy and weigh hair down – not this prescription for healthy hair. The Daily Protein Fortifier spray leaves hair soft and strong without weighing it down. I could see and feel a difference in my hair immediately after blow drying. This ultra-light spray-on left my hair super smooth, shiny and strong. Fly-aways were nonexistent and split ends were nowhere to be found. To use, spray on evenly to damp hair and style as usual. Use this new treatment and you’re certain to have stronger, healthier hair in 2007. Protein Rx Daily Protein Fortifier has a suggested retail price of $19.50. We’re always on the lookout for volume and when I got my hands on Aveda’s pure abundance™ Potion, I was hooked. There is honestly no other product that creates volume like this. Pure abundance™ can raise even the limpest hair to new heights. The technology is what I love so much. In a revolutionary new formula, it transforms from a powder to a light, absorbent lotion and instantly adds volume to hair. As a power, Potion granules are encapsulated by silica, forming bubble-like spheres. What makes this volumizer so fab is Acacia gum and kaolin clay – two high-performance bulking agents that boost the hair’s diameter by up to a visible 17%! We suggest dusting the Potion directly onto damp roots rather than applying to hands first. Once applied, work through with hands until fully dissolved and style as usual. Available in Aveda salons, spas, stores and online at, Aveda’s pure abundance™ Potion has a suggested retail price of $22.00.

*If you like the potion, we strongly urge you to try the entire pure abundance line: volumizing shampoo, clay conditioner and volumizing hair spray.

Hairspray is your friend as long as it doesn’t leave hair stiff as a board, gooey or sticky. My favorite staple spray is Fekkai’s Sheer Hold Hairspray. Worth every penny, this spray works on everyday styles or special occasion do’s. It’s the sheerest of its kind and according to Fekkai has been celebrated for its fast-acting hold. Fortified with avocado oil, panthenol (an alcohol form of Vitamin B3 that promotes moisture absorption in hair) and wheat protein, Sheer Hold Hairspray moisturizes, enhances shine and protects hair from UV rays and color fading. Great for shaping, firm hold or just a touch of control, this hairspray is best in its class. Frederic Fekkai’s Sheer Hold Hairspray has a suggested retail price of $19.50.
