Hair Care

By Stef Schwalb

The scorching sun. The horrid humidity. Clorine and ocean-side sand. Your hair takes a major toll when the sizzling season of summer gets underway, so in addition to using products that moisturize your mane and include some form of UVA/UVB protection, it’s a good idea to indulge in some deep conditioning tress treatments. One of best I’ve tried? The new Keratin Shot Protein Treatment available at the Hiro Haraguchi Hair Salon.

Since hair consists of 90 percent Keratin proteins that are constantly being stripped from strands for various environmental and sometimes salon service-related reasons (i.e. permanent waves, coloring, or straightening procedures), this treatment is a great way to revitalize your ‘do in a dynamic way. This keratin hair facial, as the salon likes to call it, replenishes the proteins and nutrients to your strands by restoring them to their natural state.

Top stylist Hiro Haraguchi launched the procedure in Japan over 10 years ago, and it can only be found in the U.S. at his salons here in New York. It’s a 45-minute treatment that includes a heavenly hair massage for a relaxing salon experience, and the results are instantaneous. Hair appears shiny, feels stronger, and has greater elasticity. It works well on any hair type, and the benefits are clearly apparent when used as a pre-color treatment or a post-color procedure, which entails the use of a thermal heater that enables the Keratin to effectively penetrate the hair follicle.

When I visited the salon, stylist Tiffany Damiani did an amazing job applying the treatment to my tresses and explained all of the benefits of what was being done. I have to admit, though, that my favorite part of the Keratin Shot Treatment is the four tiny vials of product that customers get to take home with them. You apply these take-home treatments once a week after shampooing, to maintain the color and condition of your hair until your next salon visit, and let me tell you these vials really work well. I had the treatment done close to a month ago and my strands still look simply sumptuous, so head over to the Hiro Haraguchi Salon to indulge this luxury for yourself.

Oh! And speaking of the salon, owner and master stylist Hiro Haraguchi gives a great quick cut. He was gracious enough to give my hair a little well-needed trim before I departed his place, which was top notch. I’m very excited to go back there some time soon to get the full experience, which I imagine to be most excellent.

The Hiro Haraguchi Hair Salon is located uptown at 41 East 57th Street, 4th Floor (212-593-3030), and downtown at the Hotel Gansevoort, 18 Ninth Avenue at 13th Street (212-660-6733). For additional information on the salons’ services you can also log on to the website
