Hair Care

By Candice Sabatini

Washing my hair, well really styling it, can sometimes feel like the mane event of my day. It’s me and my blow dryer, mousse, styling gel, various brushes and a flat iron working in tandem for a solid half hour. On the days when even just the thought of that process is more than I can bear, I welcome the use of dry shampoo. Dry shampoo has been around for decades, however, any I’ve tried in the past have given less than satisfactory results as I ended up with dusty looking hair that smelled odd and felt like straw.

Recently, I’ve come upon a few new formulations that offer great results, are easy to use and smell really nice.

Clean Dry Shampoo, created by Clean Fragrances, is infused with a time-released version of the same delightful fragrance as the brand’s signature eau de Parfum. The dry shampoo gives me that stop-time-mmmmm sensation when I catch the occasional whiff as my hair brushes past my nose. It’s created from a new technology that blends cottonseeds, cotton extracts and cotton proteins, which quickly absorb excess oil. Simply glide the nozzle around your scalp as you gently squeeze the bottle and deposit the quickly absorbing paraben and sulfate-free powder on your roots. Then with your fingertips, rub your head and you’re good to go. Freedom for another day!

From the makers of the famous Keratin salon treatments that rid hair of the frizzies and makes it smooth as silk, comes Keratin Complex Volumizing Dry Shampoo. I recently caught up with hair stylist Ryan Nickulas, owner of the Ryan Darius Salon, who not only gave my hair a mid-day style lift, but explained the importance of washing hair less often in order to extend the life of a keratin treatment. Simply turn the little bottle upside down and start brushing your roots with the soft attached brush. The lemon scented powder automatically comes through the middle of the bristles and infuses strands with hydrolyzed keratin. Perfect for travel or your gym bag!

Anything from Rene Furterer is almost guaranteed to smell delicious and feel luxurious. So it was no surprise that the brand’s NATURIA Dry Shampoo proved to be effective, smell amazing and feel like a million bucks. Rice and corn starch powders clean, clay and silica powders absorb excess oil while essential caraway, basil and peppermint oils balance the scalp – and smell gorgeous! The best way to use is to shake well and spray all over from about 12 inches away, then pat gently with a towel if necessary. To use the product for an extra volume boost, apply it to the crown of the scalp by lifting the hair up and spraying toward the roots.

Available at    as well as salons and spas nationwide.
