Hair Care

By Ava Mackenzie

The dog days of summer are here in full-force and with them come a whole roster of woes for your hair. Long days spent on the beach cause brittleness, split ends, faded color and frizziness. But it’s easy to hault lasting damage with a few preventative measures.

According to Stephanie Sprankle, Senior Education Development Manager for PureOlogy, you should always saturate hair with water free of salt and chlorine before diving in and comb through a protective conditioning spray to ensure strands won’t turn to straw by Labor Day. Following your pre-dip drench, a quick spritz of PureOlogy’s ColourMax will keep color vibrant, but also repair damage from thermal styling and UVA/UVB rays. Luckily, there are plenty of options for us to turn to when temperatures rise.

To repair brittle, broken ends caused by too much fun in the sun, Citre Shine’s Shine Miracle Split End Mender, available at drugstores, promises to with its blend of vitamins and nutrients, with added citrus extracts to restore hair to its original healthy shine. Rubbing into parched ends after a long day of sun will make styling more manageable and help hold the look in place.

Created to enhance shine and reflect the damaging rays of the sun, Fekkai’s Sunshine Shield Spray, available at Sephora preserves hair color by coating hair with lightweight silicone UV protection. Go straight from the surf to a night out with a simple chignon and a few sprays of this ultrafine mist.

For a stronger dose of sun protection, Tela Beauty Organics’ Guardian, available at Barney’s, is an all-natural, paraben-free solution to combat summer hair care concerns. Tuck into your beach bag when you want to protect your hair and scalp with an SPF of 18, then take home as a styling aid to prevent frizz and fly-aways.

When the damage has been done and there’s no hope for a scorched scalp, turn to the experts at Ouidad Salon, on 57th Street, for a conditioning intervention. The salon, known for its care and expertise of curly hair, have designed an exclusive Sun Shield Treatment to protect hair from future summer damage, but also to replace some of the moisture lost from regular styling and abuse. The blend of deep-penetrating ingredients smells utterly delicious and will keep you looking smooth for about four to six weeks.
