Clarify:
Color, cut, product placement. There’s a lot that goes into maintaining a magnificent mane, especially in the summer season. So it’s a good idea to give your ‘do a deep clean at least once a week. The best way to achieve this is to grab hold of a good clarifying shampoo such as Fantastic Sams’ FantasticCleanse™. It helps clear away build-up from styling products, chlorine, hard water and mineral deposits. It’s a high-lather cleansing shampoo solution, formulated with the FantasticComplex™ (an exclusive blend of pro-vitamin, soy protein, and silicone that strengthens and removes all residue from the hair shaft while nourishing the cuticle). It’s great to use before a chemical service, as well as on a weekly basis to keep hair healthy and full of shine. Application is easy cause you know the drill: wet hair, lather, thoroughly rinse, and repeat if necessary. All Fantastic Sams’ products are available at Fantastic Sams salons nationwide. For more information, locations, and prices, log on to www.fantasticsams.com.

One of my favorite pre-makeup primers is Smashbox’s Photo Finish. I love putting this on, especially in the summer, because it makes product applications stay smoothly in place during the hazy, hot, and humid days we face. Being a self-professed styling product gal, I’ve been on the hunt for something similar for my strands. At long last, I found it in Privé’s Leave-In Treatment. We wrote about the wonders of Privé Salons a few months ago and briefly touched on some of the elements in their product line. Now with this latest discovery, it’s time to dig a little deeper. Privé’s Leave-In Treatment is a lightweight, pre-styling solution that helps hair keep “style memory” all day while conditioning it. It does so by filling in any imperfections your tresses may have (such as tiny split ends and cuticles) due to free radicals and air pollutants. When you work the treatment through your tresses, you are creating a base that works as a protective barrier. Ingredients include aloe vera (to condition and detangle) and comfrey, kelp, and honey (which play the role of the primer). A big bonus of this product is that it’s good for every hair type and texture, and of course, application is breeze. After shampooing and/or conditioning, just rub a dime-size amount together in the palms of your hands and place throughout damp strands. Then style and go! Retail price is $19 for an 8.5 oz. bottle. For more information on where to purchase this and other Privé products, log on to www.priveproducts.com.

Summertime styling, as you know, isn’t always easy. Especially in NYC! When the humidity rises, hair can behave in some seriously bad ways. Two of my biggest issues are frizz and lack of shine. That’s why I was so psyched to stumble upon Schwarzkopf’s Citré Shine™ Shine Miracle™ Anti-Frizz Serum. It’s a high-gloss polishing serum that’s formulated with a custom blend of vitamins, silicones, and a UV protectant. It works great on coarse, dry, or in my case, chemically treated tresses. Ingredients include real fruit extracts (including grapefruit, lime, and mandarin orange) with Citrus Micro-Luminates technology, which together enhance shine while helping shield strands from heat styling damage and environmental elements. It’s the perfect product for fighting frizz and taming split ends. It’s alcohol-free and has a non-greasy formula that makes it a weightless and simple styling solution. It revitalizes and hydrates hair while keeping fly-aways far away. The best part of the product is that it doesn’t produce big build-up, as long as you apply it correctly. That means place no more than a dime-size amount in the palms of your hands and work it throughout your hair. For split ends, it’s suggested that you apply the same amount to your fingertips, and when you work it through your hair steer the concentration toward your ends. Citré Shine™ Shine Miracle™ Anti-Frizz Serum is available at drugstores such as Rite Aid and CVS. Suggested retail prices are $3.99 for the 2 fl. oz. and $5.99 for the 4 fl. oz.

If the winter blues are getting you down, no need to fret. There’s always something you can do to your hair for a quick pick-me-up. This month’s Fab Four will have your strands ready to spring ahead in no time!

Clarify:
Is it possible to de-stress by washing your hair? It can be. Rusk™ Sensories™ healthy™ strengthening shampoo combines blackberry and bergamot (an herb introduced to the early colonists by the Oswego Indians that smells pleasantly of oranges) to create a cleansing complex that leaves hair soft and manageable. Healthy products are a three-step regimen containing a hair-strengthening complex that, with repeated use, can improve the strength of weak or damaged hair. Rusk™ Sensories™ healthy™ strengthening shampoo features CFT (compressed formula technology) to enhance and expand the user’s sensory experience. It allows users to use 30-50% less product to achieve twice the performance.

an image

This shampoo not only smells delicious, but really manages to destroy the possibilities of flyaways. Gals with very thin hair beware: this shampoo leaves hair extremely soft and could potentially weigh fine hair down. However, those with normal to think hair will certainly benefit from this shampoo’s ability to leave hair supple and smooth. The pleasing aroma adds to its “anti-stressing” claim. Reach for Rusk™ Sensories™ healthy™ strengthening shampoo in the morning for great-smelling hair throughout the day or at night to induce relaxation. Rusk™ Sensories™ healthy™ strengthening shampoo is available at fine salons and drug stores nationwide. The suggested retail price is $11.95. Log on to www.rusk1.com for more information.

Think volume and texture are only attributes models can achieve on the runway? Spring-dust away the winter doldrums by adding some new height to your hair. ISO’s Daily Spray Wax is your answer to volume and texture. This flexible-hold spray wax provides instant volume, thickness, and texture for all hair types.

an image

It provides flexible texture, defines and adds movement to hair, and allows for versatile styling. Carnauba and beeswax add texture and separation without leaving the hair greasy. Soy protein improves condition and styling potential of hair. Vitamins A and E nourish and condition hair during styling and UV protectant shields strands against sun-damaging UVB rays. To use, shake well and hold 8-10 inches from hair and spray directly onto damp or dry hair with short even bursts. Style note: Less is more when it comes to Daily Spray Wax. Too much product will weigh hair down. ISO’s Daily Spray Wax is available on www.isohair.com and in select salons. The suggested retail price is $11.50.

Fortify:
Why not transform dry brittle hair into silky, supple tresses full of moisture and shine? Just like your skin, hair can become dry and frail from the harsh winter weather. In order to replenish and renew, Redken launched their new All Soft Silk Fuel to their already popular All Soft line.

an image

An intensive weekly treatment designed to recondition damaged hair, this serum is the answer to your split ends and lack-luster locks. This new treatment uses the Redken Interbond Conditioning System to deliver ingredients to soften hair like silk, control frizz and condition. The system delivers avocado oil directly to the hair shaft for extra softness. Charged cationic conditioning silicone targets distressed areas to instantly treat and replenish shine and softness. Ceramide, a main component of intercellular lipids that maintains the balance of water loss to provide effective hydration, is delivered to the internal core of the hair to strengthen within. Cationic conditioning agents bind the weaker areas, providing deeper treatment to more porous sections of your hair. Starch controls frizz and adds body, while glycerin helps replenish moisture.

To use, apply to clean towel-dried hair, leave in for five to fifteen minutes, depending on amount of damage to hair, and rinse. While it is lightweight, those who have fine hair should leave treatment in for five minutes tops; while gals with thicker, coarser hair could leave the treatment on for the whole fifteen. This product is great for those who use chemical treatments such as color, straightening, or perms. All Soft Silk Fuel has a suggested retail price of $15.95 for a box of 5, and can be found at salons, on www.redken.com or by calling 1-800-REDKEN8 for salon locations.

Stylize:
When you have a slight wave to your strands and you want a look on the straight and narrow, a flat iron can be your best friend. Yet the damage it may ultimately do to your hair might make you turn around and realize it could be your worst enemy depending on the quality of product and length of use. So when Farouk Systems USA created the Ceramic Hairstyling Iron (CHI) with negative ions for silk smooth hair, I was intrigued to try it.

an image

First off, it’s small and lightweight, which makes it easy to use, and the comfortable ergonomic design makes me believe using a professional salon model such as this for home use is the way to work on your hair. It heats instantly, utilizing a low wattage, and can be used effectively not only for straightening, but also to curl, flip, or just generally style your strands. It’s made of pharmaceutical-grade ceramics that produce heat which seals the cuticle, repels humidity, and helps maintain color and avoid fading. It’s squeeze-sensitive, which means that temperature is easily increased or decreased depending on your grasp. It also comes with a 10-foot, heavy-duty electrical cord that offers a swivel connection to prevent tangling. Other flat irons results I have experienced increased split ends and left my hair on the dry side. This product did not affect the smooth texture of my hair (after a recent conditioning treatment) and is something you could use on a regular basis. One thing to note: As with any electrical appliances, it’s important to read the usage and maintenance instructions carefully before use. Results may vary. Girls with curls can’t afford to skip the ultra important step of conditioning when it comes to their cleansing routine. On one hand, you don’t want a conditioner that will make your curls limp, but you can’t possibly deal with the frizz factor. Curl Tamer™ Conditioner from Collective Wellbeing has the answer. This great-smelling, formulated conditioner smoothes away frizz for manageable curls with bounce. Honey serves as one of the main ingredients as its balance of sugars, vitamins, and antioxidants add luster and strength to hair. In addition to the sweet stuff, sage aids follicles and hair shafts to remain clean and healthy. Generously apply Curl Tamer™ Conditioner as you would your regular conditioner and rinse thoroughly. Want another reason to love conditioning your curls? A portion of the proceeds from your purchase of Curl Tamer™ Conditioner is set aside in a pool of funds from all purchases. Nourishing and strengthening your strands (whether they are curly, dry, color-treated or natural) is crucial to hair care success. That’s why we are glad to have gotten our hands on the Jane Carter Solution. You’ve got hair problems? She’s got answers. To keep the moisture in your mane, we suggest sampling her Moisture Nourishing Shampoo. It gently cleanses your strands and scalp while helping to restoring them to a balanced ph. Ingredients include extracts of coltsfoot, lemon balm, and myrrh, which combined infuse hair with tons of moisture to leaving it shiny and full of body. It helps remove impurities without drying or stripping hair of its natural oils. Apply as you would a usual shampoo; then rinse and repeat as necessary. By the way, this product is perfect to partner with an assortment of Jane Carter Solution conditioners, such as our standout fav the Revitalizing Leave-in. It works amazing as an instant de-tangler that also shields your strands against environmental stress while doubling as a sunscreen. It’s great for fragile, color-treated, and/or relaxed ‘dos. To apply, spray the product on towel-dried tresses from the root to tip. Gently comb through strands and style as usual. Both products retail for $8, and parents take note: they can also be used on your kids. For more information, log on to www.janecartersolution.com.

We first covered Keune Haircosmetics products back in June when we suggested their super shine spray for any brides-to-be needing some extra brilliance. Since then they have added their own array of all natural products into a line they call So Pure. In the Styling section of this line, a standout product called Crystal Defrizz is something we found to be super for smoothing out strands during blow-drying and for keeping a firm hold on fly-aways thereafter. It’s great for all hair types and includes beneficial ingredients for bounce based on 100% Pure Plant Essential Therapy. This means the product is made up of natural fixatives and without synthetic polymers. Among the list of good elements included in this product are clay, beeswax, palmarosa oil, and light orange oil, and because it’s made with 100% natural essential oils the product aroma is fresh and fruity. Application is easy as well. Put a dime-sized amount of the product into your palms and rub them together to evenly distribute the solution throughout your towel-dried strands. Blow-dry your hair and style as usual. Crystal Defrizz retails for $9.99. Log on to www.keune.com for additional information.

Back to Basics is one of my favorite lines from a few years back when I first found them. Their products smell really good and they often work very well on straight strands like mine. So I was happy to recently discover their new Flexible Hold Hair Spray because it has the ability to healthfully lock in your style without weighing heavily on your hair or making your strands feel sticky. There’s no cakey, flakey formations either – just a touchable, shiny, and instant finish, which is still pliable way after application. The ingredients for this product include a lot of the good ones we’ve come to know and love these days: green tea (a great source of antioxidant vitamin C); shea butter (contains super natural emollients to help condition and moisturize while shielding strands against thermal damage during drying), and witch hazel (a natural astringent that helps deliver some divine shine). This product also offers UV protection too. Application is easy: You just spray it on evenly where needed. But the trick is: You have to hold the product at least 8-12 inches from your hair if you want the ideal, healthy hold. Back to Basics Flexible Hold Hair Spray retails for $11.95. It’s time to make some realistic New Year’s resolutions, so how about starting with your most important accessory? (That would be your HAIR of course!) This year, instead of fighting with and resenting your hair, embrace your natural strands. Whether thick or thin, wavy or straight, you can make the most of your locks with the right tools and a little bit of love. So go ahead, eat another piece of chocolate and grab another French fry, but make sure to clarity, fortify, amplify and stylize the right way in 2006!

Clarify: LOGICS (For Matrix) Clarifying Shampoo
There are many shampoos out there that promise to diminish the dull luster product build-up creates. It’s important to include a clarifying shampoo into your cleansing routine to wash away impurities and leave hair clean and ready for styling.

an image

LOGICS Clarifying Shampoo deeply cleanses without stripping color – good news to all us gals who visit our colorist on a regular basis. It builds volume on fine or oily hair and claims to neutralize mineral deposits. Those with any hair type – normal, oily, dry, fine or thick – can use this shampoo. Leaving no residue behind, LOGICS Clarifying Shampoo allows you to simply clean and clarify. Use a generous amount of the product and begin massaging shampoo into hair at the base of the neck, gradually working up a generous lather.

The folks at LOGICS suggest that those who have hard water (calcium in your tap water), install a water filter in the shower to prevent hair color fading (you may remember we talked about this tip when we covered Jonathan Product back in December’s Gifts to Get story). LOGICS Clarifying Shampoo has a retail price of approximately $12.00 and is available at fine salons in Manhattan and nationwide, various drugstores locations, and beauty supply stores.

Fortify: Ecru Silk Nourishing Cream
Ask any professional stylist or colorist and they’ll tell you the number-one mistake people make when it comes to hair care is lack of conditioning. As you know, continuous styling and coloring takes a heavy toll on hair. What about a product that not only nourishes hair, in addition to conditioning, but also aids in styling as well? Say hello to ECRU Silk Nourishing Cream.

an image

This styling and conditioning treatment is a cream that includes ingredients of jojoba and coconut oils, vitamin E and silk protein, Jojoba and coconut oil, Pro Vitamin B5 and Gardenia Flower – all of which provide conditioning and healing benefits to hair and scalp. It also adds luster and elasticity to hair while improving its texture, so hair feels soft and silky without being weighed down. For thick curly hair, blend a quarter-sized amount of Silk Nourishing Cream and run through damp or dry hair (I would recommend damp hair), comb and style as usual. Gals with fine hair will want to use very little of the cream – no more than a dime-sized amount. Apply to damp hair, comb and style as usual. Those of you with fine hair may want to follow with a volumizing spray to add extra body to avoid hair appearing weighed down. ECRU Silk Nourishing Cream is absorbed into the hair shaft to promote shine without residue and also helps cut back on stubborn tangles.

ECRU New York products are designed to work individually or together, are eco-friendly and not tested on animals. ECRU Silk Nourishing Cream has a retail price of approximately $21 and is available on websites such as www.ecrunewyork.com and www.solutionsforthesenses.com.

Amplify: Oscar Blandi No Gravity Volumizing Spray
He’s styled the famous tresses of Hollywood knockouts such as Selma Hayek, Uma Thurman and Gwyneth Paltrow. From the salon of Oscar Blandi, one of the most sought-after hairdressers in Hollywood and New York City, comes No Gravity volumizing spray.

an image

While this spray won’t necessarily help your hair reach new heights, it will add ample volume and flexibility to limp locks. It creates a generous amount of shine and does a great job controlling pesky fly-aways. Perfect for everyday use, Oscar Blandi No Gravity also provides a liberal amount of hold without making hair sticky or greasy. Apply directly to damp roots and style as usual. Use less for thinner hair as too much product will cause hair to look greasy. If you are looking for insane cat-walk-like body, this product is not for you. However, if you seek shine, flexibility and a moderate pick-me-up, give this a go. Oscar Blandi No Gravity volumizing spray has a retail price of $18.00 and is available at Barneys, Sephora, and the Oscar Blandi Salon (212.593.7930).

Stylize: Olivia Garden Brushes
Sexy waves and soft silky hair never go out of style. Why not make a resolution to cool down your curling iron and give your straightener a break from time to time in 2006? Instead, turn to a styling tool that is easy to use and creates salon-like results.

Olivia Garden makes innovative, high-quality hair styling products that use state-of-the-art technology. The tool to try is the Ceramic + Ion Turbo Vent Boar Brush, which features the Ceramic + Ion technology that Olivia Garden introduced with its thermal brush collection, but now it’s available with the extra benefit of boar bristles.

an image

The Ceramic + Ion Turbo Vent Boar Brush can be used on any hair type. The advanced Ion technology is found in many hairdryers that leaves hair shiny without frizz or fly-aways. The Turbo Vent airflow system features large vents and a hollow, ceramic-coated barrel to allow proper airflow and remarkable drying speed. This brush can be used on either damp or dry hair and will not create unwanted static. The results prove this product stands out against any ordinary brush you’d purchase in a drugstore.

Available in four sizes, the brushes have a suggested retail price of $16.45 (2″ size); $19.45 (2 ½”); $20.45 (3 ¼” size); and $24.25 for the Mega. It’s available at Ulta, Trade Secret, and other fine salons and beauty supply stores nationwide. But perhaps the best part of this affordable salon-quality brush is its manufacturer’s lifetime warranty.

Clarify: Clean Up Your Act
Feeling weighed-down or perhaps a bit dull lately? Maybe it’s time you changed your cleansing regimen. Gel, mouse, wax and especially hairspray can cause major build-up and leave a residue on hair follicles that can make hair appear lifeless. This month the spotlight is on Pantene™ Pro-V™ Purity Clarifying Shampoo.

Formulated with a new Amino Pro-V Complex, this shampoo cleans hair to remove build-up from daily styling. It’s clear, lightweight formula works wonders for us gals who love to pump our hair with products. For use on all hair types, this shampoo truly restores shine and cleanses just as well as it promises. The best part? It’s inexpensive luxury! Suggested retail price for Pantene™ Pro-V™ Purity Clarifying Shampoo is $3.99 for a 13.5 oz bottle.

We’re all up for trying new things – so how about some DNA in your products? You heard correctly, the folks at the Pierre Michel Salon recently introduced RepHair, the first and only hair product line that focuses on restoring your hair’s damaged DNA.

an image

This line of hair care products promises to prevent future damage caused by everyday external factors, chemical processes, sun, stress and aging. RepHair contains AC-11, an anti-aging DNA agent derived from a natural botanical called Uncaria tomentosa. It promises to restore, repair and revitalize hair; add volume and stimulate healthy hair growth; stop thinning and breakage and help prevent hair loss and thinning – all within 30-40 days of continued use. At BN we’re willing to try anything so we said ok to DNA and gave RepHair’s Deep Conditioning Masque a try.

Ask any professional and they will tell you that regular use of a deep conditioning mask is essential for healthy hair. After shampooing, the mask is applied to wet hair from roots to ends and should be massaged gently; rinse thoroughly after 10-15 minutes. After completing the conditioning process hair is left extremely soft and manageable. Fine-haired women may want to stray from the DNA, but those of you who seek deep repair from severely damaged strands should give it a whirl. This product is perfect for thick, coarse hair. Those looking to fortify can purchase RepHair’s Deep Conditioning Masque for $39.00 along with other advanced cellular products at the Pierre Michel Salon, 131 East 57th St.

Ellin Lavar is a world-renowned hairdresser who has worked her magic on celebrity heavyweights such as Whitney Houston, Donatella Versace, Iman, Julia Roberts, and Naomi Campbell, among others, on movie sets, on Oprah and in her salon. She’s also recently designed a complete line of natural hair care products called Textures. It focuses on working with all kinds of challenging hair types and takes care of the unique needs of curly thick, coarse, or brittle hair. The products are packed with several nutrient-rich ingredients from lush plant life found in the Brazilian rainforest, culminating in the LV-Complex. LV-5 consists of five renewable resources extracts from the Brazilian Amazon, including Brazil Nut Oil, Pequi Oil, Capuacu Seed Butter, Maracuja Passion Fruit Emollient, and Grape Seed Procyanidins and Tocopherols, which combined enhance the look, feel, and structure of strands that are commonly difficult to manage. The two products from the line we are featuring this month include the OptiMoist Shampoo and the SatinSoft conditioner. Hair loss is hard to handle, especially during the windy days of autumn when there’s nowhere to turn to hide it. Wearing hats is always an option, but it isn’t the only one to consider. We’ve found a new treatment regimen from Farouk Systems that’s easy to follow and can give an extra boost to thinning, fine and even limp locks. CHI44 Ionic Power Plus is a combination of Advanced American Technology and CHI44, which when fused together make a revolutionary new response to an age-old issue.
