Whether you’re trying to conceal white hair, or haven’t had to think about it yet, it’s good to know what your options are…or will be. Rubann Salon owner Ann Marie has seen girls as young as 13 with a few white hairs, and although the majority of women won’t grapple with white or gray hair until their 30’s, some women start to turn a little gray in their 20’s. I approached Ann Marie with a challenge, since I was growing tired of coloring my hair every six weeks: blend my white and gray hair in with my blonde hair, so that coloring won’t be as frequent or even necessary.
The Rubann Salon is a full-service salon with special expertise in corrective hair coloring, so I had arrived at the right place. After explaining to me that women see white hairs at a variety of ages, she decided to give me highlights white enough to blend in with any new white hair growth in strategic places; then she made portions of my blonde hair slightly darker for a popping contrast that was subtle and not too severe.

The result was a toned-down swirl of white, blond, and dark blond tones that would expertly camouflage new white and gray hair growth, thus freeing me up to worry about everything else but my hair. For lack of a less cheesy reference, I felt like I’d taken a trip to the hair fairy.
Rubann has its own brand of hydrating hair and scalp cleaners as well as other high-quality, nourishing hair care products. Ann Marie explained that many women shampoo their hair incorrectly, resulting in eventual hair loss or thinning on the crown of the head. Rather than rubbing the top of your head with vigor when shampooing, it’s better to gently massage the shampoo into the scalp – and massage underneath the hair rather than on top of it, she said. Then after rinsing, add conditioner from the bottom of the hair strands up to the top, avoiding the crown of the head. Ann Marie claims that numerous clients returned to tell her that this special approach restored the luster and thickness to their hair, and permitted re-growth in some cases.
