“For those intimidated by the Atkins diet programs in the past, now is the time to give it a try,” said Colette Heimowitz, Vice President Nutrition and Education at Atkins Nutritionals. “It couldn’t be any easier (with The New Atkins Made Easy: A Faster, Simpler Way to Shed Weight and Feel Great?Starting Today!)

While this new book features recipes and diet tips, it doesn’t deviate from the basic premise of following a low-carb diet and finding a personal carb balance. Ms. Heimowitz maintains that the backbone of the diet is to achieve normal blood sugar and insulin levels. Once carbohydrate intake is controlled and the body shifts from storing fat to burning fat, weight loss on Adkins is purported to be fast, up to 15 pounds in two weeks and sustainable. That requires buying into a permanent lifestyle change.

The New Atkins Made Easy kick-starts dieters on the diet program

Although dieters are carb- instead of calorie-counting, it is recommended on the Atkins program that they consume between 1500 to 1800 calories a day. “Calories aren’t the star but a good supporting act,” Ms. Heimowitz asserted.

The New Atkins Made Easy is based on four Phases. The dieter moves up the ladder from Phase One: Kick-Start, Phase Two: Balancing; Phase Three: Fine-Tuning and Phase Four: Lifetime Maintenance. As they follow the four phases to meet their weight loss objective, they can reintroduce a greater variety of foods. But baked goods including bread, pita, tortillas, crackers and cereals made with refined grains remain on the “avoid” list.

The book features recipes that use affordable ingredients easily accessible at supermarkets. “There is a wide choice of vegetables on the acceptable list that is expanded as the dieter moves up through the four phases. Vegetarians and vegans can follow the Atkins program, but there are necessary adjustments to suit their nutritional needs.

To boost readers’ momentum, there are also success stories from Atkins Diet followers with before-and-after photos.

Ms. Heimowitz maintains that her guideline for each recipe was to feature less than ten ingredients that can be executed in less than 30 minutes. Prepared salad dressings and sauces can be used, but shoppers are urged to select ones with no sugar added. If starved for time, meal makers can opt for a selection from one of Atkins’ four frozen entrée lines: Advantage, Day Break, Endulge and Cuisine. Surprisingly, the Atkins brand also has a line of candies including M&M look-alikes.

Potential book buyers should be aware that the new title is a repeat, yet “simplified,” guide to the Atkins Diet. The chapter on recipes begins on page 245. The rest of the book is a rehash of the Atkins Diet philosophy. The how-to low-carb eating plan includes weekly meal suggestions, detailed shopping lists and advice on how to stick to the diet. The New Atkins Made Easy: A Faster, Simpler Way to Shed Weight and Feel Great?Starting Today! joins the line of Atkins titles including The New Atkins for a New You Cookbook that have occupied spots on The New York Times’ best-seller lists. Published by Touchstone Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, the softcover book will be available in December wherever books are sold and at Amazon.com.
