Health & Fitness

“New York, New York – the city so nice they named it twice!” What’s not to love about it? We have museums, glamorous nightlife, and the best restaurants in the world. You never know what you will find walking down a street of Manhattan. It could be a tiny mom & pop diner known nationally for its macaroni and cheese or a celebrity-friendly restaurant with a waiting list longer than the Manhattan borough phone book!

A self-proclaimed foodie, I am always looking for restaurants that cater to health-conscious New Yorkers. This is the first of many monthly restaurant reviews, so if you have a great, tasty New York secret, don’t forget to email me!

My first stop in my quest for a healthy bite led me to the celebrated Pump restaurant. The first thing you’ll notice when you enter are the many autographed pictures of celebrities who have frequented this health mecca. Everyone from Tyra Banks to Justin Timberlake loves ‘The Pump’ and their bodies show it!

Their menu includes everything from egg white omelets, whole-wheat banana pancakes to baked falafel sandwiches and pizza. They even have protein-packed desserts including cookies and pies. The falafel is delicious and is baked, not fried, and made with whole-wheat pita.

I also tried the trio of banana wheat pancakes, which were not the best I ever had; but for what they were (whole wheat and whey protein packed), I couldn’t complain. The “Super Charged” plates are larger, entrée-size portions with creative names like “Hercules” (grilled chicken breast and lentil soup over pasta) and “The Rock” (low-sodium tuna over steamed broccoli and brown rice). These are priced at $10.00.

The bottom line? This is a place for the real, health-conscious gym rat or body builder, because the ingredients are totally organic, healthy and contain low sodium and fat. The compromise is, at times, the taste. Let’s face it: diet soda doesn’t taste as good as the real thing.

So keeping this in mind, I’d definitely recommend this spot for post-gym fuel or a once in a while healthy alternative for lunch or dinner.
