Fall has officially arrived in New York and with the darker days and dropping temperatures comes a dwindling enthusiasm for outdoor fitness. There’s something about those dark mornings that makes me want to skip my morning runs in favor of extra sleep, but as someone who knows better than to choose sleep over exercise, I needed to find motivation to get me out of bed and into shape!

I decided to give spinning a (literal) whirl at ZoneHampton, a spin-only studio on the Upper East Side, where individual classes run about $30 each. I’d heard things about spinning before – fanatical things – from people who swear their lives drastically changed for the better when they took up the classes. Tales of increased energy, flatter abs, lost weight and sleeker legs were promise enough for me to drag myself out of bed (at 5:30 in the morning no less!) for my first class and find out what all the fuss was about.

Led by one of ZoneHampton’s energetic instructors, classes run between 30 and 60 minutes and consist of intervals and hills, which constantly keeps your heart rate up and your body moving. As a no-impact sport, classes at ZoneHampton won’t wear on your joints and are ideal for both exercise-phobes and fitness-fanatics alike. Go as fast or as slow as your body’s comfortable with – your classmates will be too busy moving to ZoneHampton’s infectious music to notice your personal pace. And if you’re looking for an excuse to not make it, I wish you good luck. With classes every day of the week, as early as 6:15 in the morning to 7:30 at night, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a reason not to go spinning.

If the selection of classes, convenient schedule, and all-around awesome instructors isn’t enough to get you there, the chance to celeb-spot might sweeten the deal. Word on the street is Kelly Ripa, Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin have all shaped up with ZoneHampton. And when the summer comes, make sure to stop by ZoneHampton’s original studio in East Hampton. Just don’t forget to bring a water bottle – the studio’s team strives to make the environment a cleaner place by refusing to sell plastic bottles.

A great workout that’s fun and eco-friendly? Sounds like a match made in fitness heaven to me!
