Health & Fitness

As a personal trainer, I often walk through the gym and am in a surround-sound version of smell, with people working out in every direction. If you want to precede your arrival with aroma-just as Cleopatra headed down the river to meet Mark Anthony in perfumed ships so he could smell her coming-make sure your calling card is to your liking.

I love to use light fragrances and scented body products before and after my workouts. Most of the fragrance companies have made products that have light, pleasant scents, and many of these are lighter versions of their most popular fragrances. Most product lines include body powder, lotion, crème, bath and shower gel, and some lines include fragranced shampoos, conditioners and deodorants. Here are some trainer-recommended fragrances to try before and after the gym.

A great company with fantastic products for the gym is Origins by Estee Lauder. They have wonderful natural fragrances along with bath and body aromatherapy products. Here are few I include in my gym bag or locker.

Ginger Essence Fragrance Spray by Origins – I really like the spicy Ginger scent. Bergamot, lemon and lime add to the array of the enticing aroma – enticing because this is an incredibly appealing fragrance. This is an energizing yet calming spray creating a perfect balance. The ginger is great for improving circulation, ideal for before or after a workout.

Fretnot Cheerful Sensory Scent – Perky tangerine, orange and lemon make up this sensational, citrus, sensory scent. Try to say that three times fast. It is a great pick me up. Super for relieving stress and tension to tired, overworked muscles.

Gloomaway Uplifting Sensory Scent – Grapefruit, orange and spearmint give this sensory scent a clean, refreshing aroma. It is light but lively. Grapefruit is used to reduce cellulite. What woman wouldn’t want a little less of that.

Fretnot and Gloomaway scents also have bath and body collections consisting of body soufflé, bubbling bath and a body wash.

Spring Fever – Intoxicating vapors of living blossoms and lively greens. There are thirty-one of spring’s most uplifting aromas in this line, including artemisia, apple, marigold and linden blossoms along with tangy mandarin, lush cypress and sparkling watermelon.

I can’t get enough of Origin’s Ginger and Calm To Your Senses Lavender-Vanilla product lines. Both have incredible body scrubs made of white and brown sugars to buff roughness away while Dead Sea Salts take the body’s skin from dull to bright. Olive oil is added to hydrate within, softening dry skin.

Whether cold and dry or hot and humid, when battling the elements, Origin’s body crèmes will come to the rescue. Skin-nourishing olive oil, grape seed oil, rice bran oil, jojoba oil and apricot kernel oil envelope weary, dreary skin in softness. Next time you have one of those early morning workouts, when you are still half asleep, try the ginger soufflé. The citrusy-crisp scent of lush, lighthearted lemon, lime and bergamot of are uplifting, and can help with focus and clarity for a great workout. The lavender-vanilla scrub is great for the shower after a relaxing, hot steam or sauna. The lavender helps with mental and physical exhaustion. Try the crème before- an after a long day at the office workout. I like to put some fragranced lotion or crème on my feet. It makes them smell good plus moisturizes and soothes those “puppies” after a step class or a jog.

The Peace of Mind massage oil is great to apply, relieving tired, sore muscles. It contains eucalyptus to help with relief of stressed or strained muscles. The peppermint aids cramped, tight muscles. The basil assists in relieving the body’s tenseness after training.

Here are some suggestions for the lighter versions of my favorite designer fragrances. I wear different scents all the time. It’s fun to change it up a bit.

Jean Paul Guerlain claimed his grandfather, Jacques Guerlain, said “A perfume must be more mysterious than a copy of something in nature. When a man sees a woman, he shouldn’t think of a rose; he should think of that woman.” Here are a couple of my favorites by Guerlain.

Shalimar by Guerlain – This lighter version of the original Shalimar fragrance is fresh and feminine. It’s notes are comprised of fresh floral amber, transparent bergamot, jasmine petals, luminous vanilla, powdery notes of may rose.

L’Instant de Guerlain – Citrus, honey, magnolia, and amber gives L’Instant a spicy scent.

Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue – This fragrance contains flowers and fruit notes. Citron, granny smith apples, bluebells, jasmine sambac, bamboo, white rose, cedar wood, musk and amber. Light Blue also has a refreshing body gel and deodorant stick.

DKNY- Be Delicious – I find this to be a really yummy and fun fragrance. It comes in a charming shiny metal and glass apple bottle, and combines the scent of apple with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods. Be Delicious has a lightweight body lotion that left my skin feeling soft. It seals in the moisture to help hydrate the skin, and contains antioxidants that help block free radicals.

Armani Acqua Di Gio – Florals and fruity hyacinth, mandarin, jasmine, gardenia, rose, orange blossom, amber, sandalwood and vanilla. I enjoy this one for the gym because it is delicate.

Narcisco Rodriguez For Her – This has a warm, soft scent. It combines the powerful musk with layers of orange blossom and vanilla.

Marc Jacobs – This fragrance is inspired by the flesh tones of vintage lingerie. The delicate scent of jasmine nectar blended with touches of fresh air, Italian bergamot, and plush floral notes, and smoothed with lush pink musk, cashmere wood, and sandalwood. Other notes of star jasmine, jasmine breeze accord, pink freesia, orange flower, and Japanese honeysuckle are present.

Michael Kors Sheer Michael – This light interpretation of the original, award-winning Michael fragrance has a sheer style. Sheer Michael is a fresh floral design featuring the signature Michael by Michael Kors tuberose notes that are beautifully blended with sparkling citrus, warm spices, and sensuous woods. The notes include, dewy freesia, tamarind, Chinese osmanthus, incense, fresh tuberose, white wings peony, blue orris, arum lilies, cashmere woods, musk, vetiver Haiti. A unique product to the Michael Kors line is the shine stick. Glide it down legs, shins and ankles for shimmer. It is lightly tinted to even out imperfections, and add a hint of healthy color and a subtle scent. My legs are pale so I love using the shine stick to give them some life.

Annick Goutal- Les Nuits – In the spirit of the original d’Hadrien, this warmer, more seductive scent has the familiar fresh top notes of icy Sicilian lemons warmed with rich vanilla, amber, and musk, leaving an intriguing oriental trail behind the woman who wears it. The notes are Sicilian lemon, bergamot, green mandarin, tangerine, vanilla, sandalwood, Indonesian patchouli, amber, and white musk.

I’d like to leave you with my philosophy for fragrance in the gym: whatever your tastes may be, keep it light, fresh and let it enhance your workout!
