As the temperature begins to rise on NYC’s fully bloomed tree-lined streets, us city girls are stepping out in our newly bought or dusted off spring and summer wardrobes. At the first sign of summer-like weather I jet off to my local salon/spa for an indulging pedicure to prepare myself for my favorite summer accessory — the sandal. Flat or heeled, leather or wood, wedges or platforms, the perfect pair of summer sandals can pull together any outfit. Picking out the must-have pair is no easy task, but with so many options this season in every color, shape, and style, you’ll be sure to find a sandal or two … or three that fits you summer savvy style.
The Summer Flat Sandal:
Nothing says summer in NYC like Sunday brunch with friends wearing your favorite summer frock or printed maxi dress paired with an easy-luxe pair of flat sandals. Easy to throw on and comfortable enough to get you through a workday or weekend shopping spree, a nice leather or adorned flat sandal is a stylish accent for your summer-wear. The J Crew Quorra Sandal in chalk is simple and chic, skillfully created in a die-cut leather in the shape of Xs and Os. The name is derived from the Italian word for heart, a fitting name as it is sure to be loved by many this summer, including myself, as it will certainly be added to my must-have summer accessory list. The sandal is available at http://www.jcrew.com for $150 in chalk, mink, and sand dune.
Naya Sandals is an environmentally conscious footwear line with a commitment for comfort and beauty. The criss-cross Naya Sister Sandals with an ankle cuff are soft and easy on the foot and simple enough to pair with many looks. Available in 5 different colors for $120 at http://www.zappos.com.
Looking to add a little shimmer, quirk, or adornment to your summer accessories, well look no further than Anthropologie. It is one of my favorite stores for unique and fun fashion finds and looking for summer sandals is no exception. The Tollan Sandals, exclusively sold at anthropolgie.com, are embellished with intricate Aztec inspired beading and an oversized tasseled back zipper, just waiting to be paired with my favorite cuffed jeans and a silk blouse. Seychelles Golden Grove Sandals for $90, filled with a mosaic of lustrous beading along an ankle t-strap is another great find at Anthropologie.
The Summer Wedge:
The wedge sandal is hitting stores this summer again as a big trend. From low to high-heeled and from reasonably priced to a fashion splurge, summer wedges are available in all desired styles and price ranges, making it a must-have summer accessory. I honestly love a nice pair of platform wedges as it gives you the desired added height without the pain of walking on a thin 4 or 5-inch heel. I have seen some lovely wood cut platform wedges like these 4 ½ inch Tory Burch Wood Wedge Espadrille Sandals. The soft color blocked cream and leather pairs nicely with the natural, jute-wrapped wood for a beautiful combination. For another chic pair of wooden wedges check out the DIANE von FURSTENBERG Opal Wedges. With off-white straps and a sculptural 5-inch wood wedge, these platforms are a modern twist on your typical wedge heel, sure to stand out among the sea of summer sandals. Both summer wedges are available at Bloomingdales.
Cork-heeled wedges also found their way onto the Spring-Summer 2011 runways and into department stores and boutiques alike this season. An alternative to the espadrille, cork wedges add a little edge to your typical sandal. The J Crew Maryanne Cork Wedges are styled in Italian leather with a slimmed down, leg lengthening 4-¼ inch cork heel. The Maryanne wedge is an ideal summer shoe to wear anywhere from the city streets to the boardwalk. Adding a bit more glamour to your summer accessory collection, the Marc by Marc Jacobs leather sandals are constructed of sleek patent leather, atop textured painted cork wedges. Throw on a flirty dress or a pair of cargos and an embellished tank with these cool 5″ glam wedges for a relaxed and easy-chic look. Available at Saks Fifth Avenue. Whether stepping out in a pair of beaded flats or strappy leather and cork wedges, you will certainly be putting your best foot (or sandal) forward this summer.
